About this blog…
“This blog is like a fusion of the Baroque ‘salon’ with its well-tuned harpsichord around which polite society gathered for entertainment and edification and, on the other hand, a Wild West “saloon” with its out-of-tune piano and swinging doors, where everyone has a gun and something to say. Nevertheless, we try to point our discussions back to what it is to be Catholic in this increasingly difficult age, to love God, and how to get to heaven.” – Fr. Z

“Until the Lord be pleased to settle, through the instrumentality of the princes of the Church and the lawful ministers of His justice, the trouble aroused by the pride of a few and the ignorance of some others, let us with the help of God endeavor with calm and humble patience to render love for hatred, to avoid disputes with the silly, to keep to the truth and not fight with the weapons of falsehood, and to beg of God at all times that in all our thoughts and desires, in all our words and actions, He may hold the first place who calls Himself the origin of all things.”

- The most evident mark of God’s anger and the most terrible castigation He can inflict upon the world are manifested when He permits His people to fall into the hands of clerics who are priests more in name than in deed, priests who practice the cruelty of ravening wolves rather than the charity and affection of devoted shepherds.

Don’t rely on popes, bishops and priests.
“He [Satan] will set up a counter-Church which will be the ape of the Church because, he the devil, is the ape of God. It will have all the notes and characteristics of the Church, but in reverse and emptied of its divine content. It will be a mystical body of the anti-Christ that will in all externals resemble the mystical body of Christ. In desperate need for God, whom he nevertheless refuses to adore, modern man in his loneliness and frustration will hunger more and more for membership in a community that will give him enlargement of purpose, but at the cost of losing himself in some vague collectivity.”
“Who is going to save our Church? Not our bishops, not our priests and religious. It is up to you, the people. You have the minds, the eyes, and the ears to save the Church. Your mission is to see that your priests act like priests, your bishops act like bishops.”- Fulton Sheen

- “The modern habit of doing ceremonial things unceremoniously is no proof of humility; rather it proves the offender's inability to forget himself in the rite, and his readiness to spoil for every one else the proper pleasure of ritual.”

PLEASE subscribe via PayPal if it is useful. Zelle and Wise are better, but PayPal is convenient.
A monthly subscription donation means I have steady income I can plan on. I put you my list of benefactors for whom I pray and for whom I often say Holy Mass.
In view of the rapidly changing challenges I now face, I would like to add more $10/month subscribers. Will you please help?

"But if, in any layman who is indeed imbued with literature, ignorance of the Latin language, which we can truly call the 'catholic' language, indicates a certain sluggishness in his love toward the Church, how much more fitting it is that each and every cleric should be adequately practiced and skilled in that language!" - Pius XI
"Let us realize that this remark of Cicero (Brutus 37, 140) can be in a certain way referred to [young lay people]: 'It is not so much a matter of distinction to know Latin as it is disgraceful not to know it.'" - St. John Paul II
Let us pray…
Grant unto thy Church, we beseech Thee, O merciful God, that She, being gathered together by the Holy Ghost, may be in no wise troubled by attack from her foes. O God, who by sin art offended and by penance pacified, mercifully regard the prayers of Thy people making supplication unto Thee, and turn away the scourges of Thine anger which we deserve for our sins. Almighty and Everlasting God, in whose Hand are the power and the government of every realm: look down upon and help the Christian people that the heathen nations who trust in the fierceness of their own might may be crushed by the power of thine Arm. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. R. Amen.

As the great Msgr. Schuler used to say when I was returning home, “I wish and wish and wish again that I was back in Michigan.”
He had relatives that lived in southern Michigan, near Kalamazoo, but not, as he could recall, related to the memorable restauranteur Win Schuler
Hello, Father Z! Welcome to my neck of the woods – I live in Michigan, about an hour from where you will be. I wish I could be there with you today. Prayers for a safe journey.
Lu Harvey
O Almighty and merciful God, who hast commissioned Thy angels to guide and protect us, command them to be our assiduous companions from our setting out until our return; to clothe us with their invisible protection; to keep from us all danger of collision, of fire, of explosion, of fall and bruises, and finally, having preserved us from all evil, and especially from sin, to guide us to our heavenly home. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Now. If you were coming to Ohio, THAT would be a most auspicious development! Still, it’s nice to know you’re sort of close! :-)
Enjoy your trip!
Saying prayers for a safe journey, Fr. Z! Only been to Michigan once, but really liked it there.
May your holy angel protect you always.
Welcome to Michigan, Father! I hope you have a nice stay despite the weather! :)
Have a good time in Michigan. I don’t know what you’ll be doing. I’m from Ann Arbor, but I’m in NJ right now then I’m going back (through Penn) to Steubenvilly OH tomorrow. I guess there’s no chance of me running into you. How sad.
C’mon over to Assumption Grotto – a couple hours away if you can squeeze in the trip!
Oh no, Father Z’s getting delusions of grandeur, using the royal “we.”
;-)
Come to Notre Dame, Father Z; we’ll put you up!
How likely is it that Fr. Z will ever make it to Steuby U during a Semester when we’re all around?
America’s Nineveh.
Dear Father,
This letter to the editor of the Minneapolis Star Tribune appeared today. I did e-mail him and kindly asked him who made him the spokesman for the Catholic Church. He is a Lutheran minister at a Lutheran church in Apple Valley, MN. What does it have to do with Michigan? Nothing.
POLITICS OF THE EUCHARIST
Follow Jesus’ lead
I find it unconscionable that any clergy person would withhold the sacrament from a parishioner because of who he or she is supporting for public office (“The body of Christ, wielded ideologically,” June 4). This is a sacrament of inclusivity, not exclusivity! Consider that first Passover meal when Jesus instituted what we now call the Lord’s Supper.
Did he exclude either Peter or Judas from the meal even though he surely knew of their upcoming denial and betrayal? Of course not.
Using the sacraments as a kind of bonus for political or doctrinal correctness demeans the power and the wonder of these gifts. If Jesus did not add conditions and qualifiers to the sacraments, neither should we who represent him to the world.
THE REV. PAUL L. HARRINGTON,
APPLE VALLEY
Can’t wait to see a report of today’s doings in K-zoo!
Wish I could’ve been there.
Today was fantastic. We only wish we could have had more time to hear you speak!
Ah well, we’ll get to assist at a solemn Mass tomorrow with you, Fr. David (Grondz)… and of course, Deacon Harold Potter.
Thanks to you, I’ll always remember the proper way to greet a Deacon named Harry Potter: “Charmed, I’m sure”. =D

Yes, it was good to see you there today… and remember for the future that Michigan is on EASTERN TIME! I have since moved on to the Sleep Inn at Midway Airport in Chicago, waiting for the chant intensive on Monday. It would always be good to hear you speak for longer than you were able today. The workshop at St. Mary’s was excellent today… it is always a good experience to visit another parish away from your own, especially when it is one such as St. Mary’s…. and it is so encouraging to see so many people interested in CHANT! Things are changing….

It was nice to see you in Kalamazoo today. Thanks for braving all our rain to be here.
I went to Jr. and H. school in Ann Arbor, and was Baptized , confirmed etc. at St Francis in Ann Arbor, as an adult; washing away, hopefully, my existentialism and atheism…
Other than not having any electricity, I rather liked Kalamazoo! I hope for a return trip soon.
