“This blog is like a fusion of the Baroque ‘salon’ with its well-tuned harpsichord around which polite society gathered for entertainment and edification and, on the other hand, a Wild West “saloon” with its out-of-tune piano and swinging doors, where everyone has a gun and something to say. Nevertheless, we try to point our discussions back to what it is to be Catholic in this increasingly difficult age, to love God, and how to get to heaven.” – Fr. Z

Get ready…
Don’t rely on popes, bishops and priests.
“He [Satan] will set up a counter-Church which will be the ape of the Church because, he the devil, is the ape of God. It will have all the notes and characteristics of the Church, but in reverse and emptied of its divine content. It will be a mystical body of the anti-Christ that will in all externals resemble the mystical body of Christ. In desperate need for God, whom he nevertheless refuses to adore, modern man in his loneliness and frustration will hunger more and more for membership in a community that will give him enlargement of purpose, but at the cost of losing himself in some vague collectivity.”
“Who is going to save our Church? Not our bishops, not our priests and religious. It is up to you, the people. You have the minds, the eyes, and the ears to save the Church. Your mission is to see that your priests act like priests, your bishops act like bishops.”- Fulton Sheen

As for Latin…
"But if, in any layman who is indeed imbued with literature, ignorance of the Latin language, which we can truly call the 'catholic' language, indicates a certain sluggishness in his love toward the Church, how much more fitting it is that each and every cleric should be adequately practiced and skilled in that language!" - Pius XI
"Let us realize that this remark of Cicero (Brutus 37, 140) can be in a certain way referred to [young lay people]: 'It is not so much a matter of distinction to know Latin as it is disgraceful not to know it.'" - St. John Paul II

Let us pray…
Grant unto thy Church, we beseech Thee, O merciful God, that She, being gathered together by the Holy Ghost, may be in no wise troubled by attack from her foes. O God, who by sin art offended and by penance pacified, mercifully regard the prayers of Thy people making supplication unto Thee, and turn away the scourges of Thine anger which we deserve for our sins. Almighty and Everlasting God, in whose Hand are the power and the government of every realm: look down upon and help the Christian people that the heathen nations who trust in the fierceness of their own might may be crushed by the power of thine Arm. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. R. Amen.

Still without power
This entry was posted in SESSIUNCULA. Bookmark the permalink.
We are still without electricity here in this part of town.
I am posting from my phone, which is getting low on power. I will have recharge it from the car.
It reminds you of how dependent now are on it.
My sympathy! I’ll pray for the restoration of power to your area.
My hubby insists things would be better and power outages fewer if more research went into fusion. He’d like to see every home or neighborhood with its own power system independent of anyone else. I remind him that not all of us know physics and engineering the way he does. He fires back that free enterprise will provide maintenance experts for people to contract with….I never win these discussions. :-) LOL!
Just think, it could also be REALLY cold right now.
This calls for a reposting of the thread, “What would you do if you only had 6 hours to pack and run”, presumably from Obama’s shock troops.
Dear Fr. Z – if you can breathe through the hot and humid Michigan air, go read a good book and we’ll still be here, no matter how long it takes you to get back up and running.
LCB writes, “presumably from Obama’s shock troops.”
LCB,
What a ridiculous political injection into this blog. This is clearly not the place for political discussion. Sorry Father, but I just couldn’t let that comment stand.
As a matter of fact politics may have a great deal more to do with all the problems that we are experiencing. Remember Jesus’ statement of fact. “Not everyone who cries Lord, Lord wil enter the KIngdom: but, he who does the will of My Father.” 40 million dead and counting. A very important matter is before us and God will not judge us lightly no matter which Liturgical form we choose. Pray and work for the end of abortion in this country.
True about it being better that it’s hot… you can always go swimming, get in water SOMEHOW etc… to cool off, but when you lose power in the cold, that is a serious problem! It is surprisingly beautiful in Chicago today… cooler and a little drier than yesterday!
Prayers for quick restoration of the power grid in your area.
Our power goes down frequently due to brownouts/t’storms in the summer and ice storms in the winter. We bought a gasoline-powered generator before we bought a lawnmower . . . and we also have monster battery backups for the computer.
I thought about giving up the Internet for Lent . . . but I wouldn’t get much work done either.
Call me crazy, but I think it’s perfectly fine for someone in a blog comment to poke mild fun in an obviously non-serious fashion at a politician who supports the continuing slaughter of 4,000 infants per day.
It is amazing how dependent we are on power, cars, phones, computers, etc! All of these things are a gift, but we certainly are dependent on them. Enjoy the quiet! God bless!
With 75 per cent of nuclear power’s electricity and 220V instead of 110 Volts, here (France) power outages are almost unknown, while electricity’s price is not depending of oil’s price.
Ponder this.
Dear Father Z, Mother Teresa would have a lot to say about Obama’s “political” view of human life. Dead babies receive no electrical power or anything else in this life but the grace of our God. There’s always time for us lovers of the Extraordinary Form (and Ordinary Form) to stand up for babies by the grace of God. Father, I know you have power even when all the electrical power around you is out! Eamus Catuli !
Well, whenever you have the voltage to reply…
Are you going to be in Chicago next week?
Prayers for quick restoration, it definitely does remind you of how dependent on modern conveniences we are. Also makes me realize just how blessed we all are to have these modern conveniences. Just settle down and read a good book, we’ll all be here!
Religion and Obama, in particular on a serious Catholic blog, is a very relevant topic, especially if one wants to discuss the possibility of demonic possession!
Mary,
Religion, abortion, communion to politicians and a host of other topics are great topics for this serious Catholic blog and have been discussed civilly on this blog and rightly so. Use of slurs, like “shock troops” and “demonic possession” when talking about Obama are just over the top. You may not like him and may not vote for him, but at least discuss your reasons and not just resort to childish taunts.
Dan O,
I’ll respond in bullet point form to aid clarity:
1) You seem to be missing the light-humored fun some of us are having with words.
2) Killing babies is wrong and demonic.
3) Supporting Obama means supporting killing babies, which is wrong and demonic.
4) The only individual more pro-killing-babies than Obama is Maloch.
So, game on, let’s discuss reasons. Here is my starting point:
The desire to perpetuate the worst genocide in history, with over 40 million murders in America alone, has its origins in demonic activity. A person who is so obviously influenced by the Culture of Death and demonic desires is not qualified to serve as President of the United States of America.
Fr Z, I’ve truly enjoyed following and occasionally commenting on your blog, but today’s comments about Sen Obama compel be to say good-bye. I disagree with Sen Obama on abortion. But I also disagree with Sen McCain on the war in Iraq, health care, energy and tax cuts and the economy. These, too, affect all of us, including the yet-to-be-borne. I know you’re isolated due to the MidWest storms, but hope that you will chime in and set some boundaries for your blog on political issues, on which all of us are certain to disagree to some extent. If not — if this is a political blog, not a liturgical on — I will regretfully limit my attention and support on other liturgical forums.
Bill, chill. Fr Z is having tech difficulties, so he can’t moderate all that well right now, I’d bet. This is the first mention of Obama I’ve seen here (at least).
Fr Z, I have enjoyed following and occasionally commenting on your blog, but I regret that I find the comments about Sen Obama offensive and inappropriate on a forum addressed to liturgical issues. I disagree with Sen Obama about abortion, but I also disagree with Sen McCain about the war in Iraq, health care, energy, tax cuts and the economy. These issues also affect all of us, including the yet-to-be-born. Perhaps I have misunderstood the purpose of your blog, but I have no interest in discussing politics here. I know you are isolated due to inclement weather, but hopefully you will provide some guidance as to the proper boundaries of posting on this otherwise excellent forum. If I am mistaken, then I, for one, regretfully will limit my attention and support to other liturgical forums.
Bill, relax. The guy has a right to make a little joke. It’s a political year. Lighten up.
Bill, If you don’t want to discuss politics, why the laundry list of issues? You have the right to your opinion, but honestly, I don’t see it… Neo-socialism appeals? Really? Goodness, I need to get out more.
Mr. (Physics) Seeton and Jacques…you are my heroes…how about running for President? Opps not you Jacques (unless your an American living in France). Father Z would make a great Pres. but priests can’t and he’s needed on the front lines of the Holy Father’s shock troops.
‘Slur’ of demonic possession of politicians not ‘over the top.’

Good-bye, Bill.
Father’s blog is not strictly entirely about the Tridentine Mass. It’s one of the most comprehensive sites dedicated to same, and thankfully Father is quicker on the news of it, but Father also a sense of humor, and a lot of us can identify with him. Look at his stuff on those birds, his cooking ( which I think is great–a priest who can cook his own dinner ), and I just totally liked that pic of his cigar and shot of scotch. According to your standards, Father would be out of line on his own blog.
Things like what people think of a presidential candidate are important because such things affect our lives and Catholics in particular and Americans in general. The two go hand in hand on this site.
Hopefully, we’ve given you a different outlook, but if not, ‘BYE.
Father,
It’s the devil. Surely,
Robert
I am in Grand Rapids now, where there is electricity.
I cannot tell you how disappointed I am in this.
It strikes me that some people took advantage of my lack of ability to connect to create a problem here that is totally out of place.
c’mon Fr. Z we’re dying out here without your blogs
