From what I can see Damian Thompson has confidently predicted that everyone from the Loch Ness Monster to Elvis will be appointed.
Why don’t we just all wait to see who is appointed before getting too excited.
Ruth Gledhill of The (once august) Times is picking up similar reports from Rodari. Interestingly, she notes that the Cong. for Bishops is meeting today to discuss the matter, NOT than the Pope had approved a choice. She also suggests that +Cormac’s presence in Rome this week might expediete administrative affairs, and thinks that an announcement will be made before the Papal Journey to Angola.
Lets hope that some group of liberal senior priests from the archdiocese don’t try to cook up some kind of a vote of no confidence in the new Archbishop if he turns out to be conservative. I still think Papa should strap on his (…) kicking boots and head on down to Linz, but then, that is why he is the Pope and I am not. The Holy Spirit is wise that way.
I sometimes try to imagine a movie from the 50s with John Wayne as the Pope… [Excellent.]
Viking, I like that imagery! Tom
You, seriously think if he’s that conservative CMOC would have appointed him as an assistant bishop in the first place.
Perhaps Fr. Finnigan is still in the running then?
In Great Britain we refer to Bishops as:-
His Lordship – not His Excellency.
We also state Rt Rev Bernard Longley – not Most Rev Bernard Longley.
This is in keeping with the Hierarchy of the Church of England (Anglican) titles.
In Great Britain we refer to Archbishops as:-
His Grace – not His Excellency
We state for Archbishops – Most Rev
Again, is in keeping with the CoE.
We address the Apostolic Nuncio (Archbishop) as His Excellency – as we do with all ambassadors resident in GB.

Viking —
I’d love to hear Pope John (Wayne) say “your PILGRIM Church on Earth”.
I think we should wait and see. The bishop is an acquaintance of mine. He is a very fine man, and very priestly.
“A Pope’s got to do what a Pope’s got to do.”
Did anyone hear what the National Catholic Register said about new Archbishop Dolan?
It in a way I think degraded him as a modern liturgical same side of the fence, “cigar chomping back slapping” good fellow. The pictures are even super cheesy I think someone should find and post this for commenting. Especially can someone comment on the picture on the front cover.
It is so weird the demeanor and attitudes that is like night and day in a most evident in the way traditional clergy from the thoughts of modern schools and disciplines in acting in an expression of there solemn dignity, as an expression there social and etiquette formation if any.
This means no back slapping or “hardy har har” give me a hug after Mass. No more “I wear a suite because I am just like you guys. No more high fiving (mentioned in Adictle in question) machoness.
Can someone explain what is meant by the “magic circle”. I’ve seen this in quite a few of DT’s pieces, but don’t wuite get it.
“Magic Circle” was a description invented by DT a while ago; it consists of bishops he has particular distaste for, particularly because they don’t jump to his tune.
Viking-I like your ‘John Wayne’ comparison!
Has there been any ‘official’ announcement on the new Archbishop?
