Dear Father, Here is a grand opportunity to twitter from an event. There is a twitter app for mobile phone you can download so you can tweet from your phone.
Bishops are tweeting from San Antonio meetings.
This is perfect for Twitter!
Sorry to ask AC, but how can I follow them on twitter?
Father Z:
Any talk there about the upcoming social encyclical from Pope Benedict, and whether Father Sirico and the Acton Institute people had any input into it?
According to CatholicCulture.com:
The Pontiff said that reflections on economics and the common welfare are particularly necessary today in light of the worldwide financial crisis. That crisis, he said, “clearly indicates the need to reconsider certain economic-financial paradigms that have dominated over the last few years.”
My concern is this: whether, in Certain Circles, what the Pope might say about the “need to reconsider certain economic-financial paradigms” will be taken as an endorsement of Obamanomics and a proof of the necessity of State Socialism and the strangulation of the Free Market in the name of Helping the Poor. This is where the Acton Institute’s people — the Free Market’s best friend in the Catholic Church — would have been most needed.
No talk about the new “social encyclical”. It is the first night and, it is not out yet!
Um, Father, what does it mean to be “authentically ecumenical”?
Someday, Father, I hope to make it there. Enjoy. And I’m looking forward to what reports you can share.
Fr. Z, can you elucidate the goal of this conference?
Oh dear, let’s hope the Holy Father sought “input” from Fr. Sirico and the Acton Institute before completing his anticipated encyclical. We certainly wouldn’t want to trust something like this to the untutored judgment of “the true Vicar of Christ, the head of the whole Church and the father and teacher of all Christians.” ROTFL.
chihiro here’s the link to Acton University. http://www.acton.org/actonu/
I am not there but my spouse is and I look forward to hearing all about it from him, Fr. Z and the other people twittering and blogging about it.
Hey Fr. Z!
The Acton Institute came to my Seminary College Alma Mater a few years ago to give us a presentation… I was very impressed as I know you are. Looking forward to hearing more about your experience…
My brother use to work for the Acton Institute. They rated the high school I go to as one of the top fifty Catholic schools in the country. One of the founders goes to my church.
PMcGrath:
His Holiness’ writings on economics in the past and present have been critical of both the “Obamanomics” Big Government capitalist approach and the free market Big Business capitalist approach. Both of these paradigms will “need to be reconsidered” as they are what contributed to the current economic crisis, and different paradigms will need to be considered, as Card. Ratzinger said in a 1985 speech: “since all methods employed hitherto have proven themselves inadequate.”
I expect we shall see more of the same when Caritas in Veritate comes out.
