Together with the Vatican Congregation for Clergy, a group in Spain called Home of the Mother (something to do with the EUK Mamie Foundation) has put out a 30 minute video DVD on the vocation to the priesthood.
The DVD is called Alter Christus, which gives you right away that this is not about the priest as "Just call me Bob" or presider of a fuzzy self-affirming faith community.
The DVD is available in many language. The price is $17 or E.12.
Video includes interviews with: Cardinal Cláudio Hummes, Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy, Cardinal Antonio Cañizares, Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, Cardinal Julian Herranz, President of the Disciplinary Commission of the Roman Curia, Archbishop Mauro Piacenza, Secretary of the Congregation for the Clergy, Abbot Michael John Zielinski, Vice-President of the Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Church, Monsignor Guido Marini, Pontifical Master of Ceremonies, and many others.
Much of it is filmed in Rome.
A good deal of the film shows virile and traditional images of ministry. There is a strong focus on St. John Vianney, Eucharistic adoration and devotions such as Benediction, clerical garb, Mary as Mother of priests, prayer for priests.
There is a good section on the importance of liturgy, perfectly in keeping with Pope Benedict’s Sacramentum caritatis. There clips with Msgr. Guido Marini, the Holy Father’s MC.
I think all of the liturgy clips are of the Novus Ordo, which is a serious flaw. Anything on priesthood which speaks about liturgy today for the Latin, Roman Church must must must also include the other lung of the Roman Rite. If it doesn’t, it is flawed. But I caught a clear glimpse of the unmistakable painting by Guido Reni of the Trinity over the altar of the Extraordinary Form parish in Rome, Ss. Trinita dei Pelegrini. That said, the video is not into guitars and clapping and big puppets and sanctuaries crammed with lay "ministers".
This could be a great video to show to a group of young men.

Excellent! I think I’ll show this to my 51 HS freshmen in Religion Class as we close in on Holy Week.
At 1:02 there is an image of a priest facing, I think a side alter. This would be at least one example of the EF in the video.

A bit ironic that they reference the Cure d’Ars, and yet demphasize the Traditional Latin Mass. No other Saint speaks more fully to the profound necessity for God’s Church to worship in a profound way; that is, before the time of the concillium. The Cure of Ars almost gave-up the priesthood because his Latin was so poor, and he, for a time, thought he couldn’t say the Mass; but he persevered and winded-up being the Patron Saint of Priests because he persevered in Latin and the TLM; now if that is not a good example to those Priests wondering if they should bother learning the EF, what is?
Yes, it is a serious flaw to not include more images of the TLM. I did notice that every time the video showed someone receiving holy communion, it was received on the tongue, albeit not kneeling.
Though I would have liked to see more explicit emphasis on the need for priests to seek the salvation of souls, overall it was quite a good video.
You should see the other two parts; there appear to be glimpses of TLMs in those as well.
Maltese: I believe you’re drawing a false-cause association there. His sanctity didn’t depend on his mastery of Latin but in the grace given him to understand his full role as a parish priest. He knew that his position as alter Christus didn’t stop at the altar, that he had to give of himself to his people fully and unstintingly, every day. While his persistence in learning the Mass is commendable, the example St. John Vianney gives goes far beyond that.
I know I’m REALLY watching, but it appears that two people are shown receiving on their knees at 6:13…first a young man, and then the young woman. Just her face is shown but if you watch it appears from her movements that she is starting to stand after receiving the Eucharist.

His sanctity didn’t depend on his mastery of Latin, but his mastery of Latin was due to his sanctity. It is not a small coincidence that Catholics for almost 2,000 depended on that language for their edification, because in it they are linked both in the horizontal plane-with each other in this time and place; and vertically-with Catholics since the time of Christ. As a non-catholic lawyer friend of mine, who is also a Latin scholar, said: “the stupidest thing the Church ever did was get rid of the Latin Mass.” Now, I know it’s so-called “restored,” but it is still second-call to the improvised Bugnini mass…

Great video. Liked it so much I wanted to buy it. However, had a weird glitch trying to order it through H.M. website.
Short version: the website wanted to convert price from Euro’s to dollars *twice*, in its PayPal interface. (i.e. in final checkout, wanted to convert the U.S. dollars price (already calculated with exchange rate) to Euro’s *again*, bringing the total up to almost $50.
Did anyone else run into this, or know how to get around this?

I watched the whole series on youtube but did notice as well the absence of the Tridentine Form of Mass. A great video series but really should have included some imagery of the TLM as part of the life of a Priest. The two forms of the Roman Rite go hand in hand. Some good commnetary and nice vestments were shown. Overall I got the impression that Priestly life is calming down and getting much more serious than it was in the late 70’s and early 80’s. This is good news.
Never mind (to own entry above). There is a “currency selector” drop-down on the catalogue window. Don’t use this to switch to U.S. dollars before transaction is complete, otherwise will not process right. (Just go through whole transaction in Euros and PayPal will convert for you). Ends up being about $30 with shipping and currency conversion, so kind of pricey, but may be worth it for parish / teaching use.
This was a very powerful clip. I liked the fact then when the reception of Holy Communion was shown, it was in the traditional manner, on the tongue. I think that is what is known as a subliminal message. Tom
Excellent video from an excellent community. I am very familiar with The Home of The Mother. Within their community, Holy Communion is always received kneeling and on the tongue, by intinction. The first time I attended an OF Mass in Latin was at a Mass said by the founder of the community.
One of the three missions of the community is “the defense of the Eucharist”, along with “the defense of the Blessed Mother, especially in her perpetual virginity”, and “conquering the youth for Christ.”
They are rock solid and their priest study in Rome.
