Alverno (Catholic) College has abortion advocacy groups on website

You might want to know about an online protest to Alverno College – a Catholic institution.

Here is the link.

Alverno College links to 10 abortion advocacy groups on their web site.

Since the Alverno College’s site is too fancy by half, you can find the links to abortion advocacy groups on Alverno College’s web site here.

Each item on this menu opens up a new set of links.  For example, the entry "Women’s & Girls’ Health" leads you to pro-abortion groups (Center for Reproductive Rights, Feminist Women’s Health Center, National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, etc.).

A question for Father Z. or one of the many knowledgeable readers: Who can take away the privilege of an institution to call itself Catholic? A Bishop, or a board of Trustees?

It is a disgrace and a sin that such things like this, linking to Abortion groups from a Catholic Institution, happen. Much prayer and reparation is needed. Add mine in.

If I am correct, the local ordinary is responsible for safeguarding the theological teachings of the Church in schools and universities in his jurisdiction. From Alverno’s web site information, the school is run by the School Sisters of St. Francis. Their program of studies do not include any formal degrees offered for philosophy or theology. Furthermore, the local bishop does not appear to be part of the school’s Board of Trustees.

With that said, I am not certain if the bishop can take action on the matter himself.

It doesn’t seem to me like the links alone are the problem–as another person pointed out, the real problem is that they don’t have any pro-life links to counter them. They could have at least added Feminists for Life, or something like that.

I don’t see any problem with a research website at a Catholic university having links that present all sides of the story, even those that go against Church teaching. After all, you’re not going to oppose their arguments very effectively unless you read them first.

These sorts of things church my stomach. Literally.

  5. Andy F. says:

oops, that is CHURN, not church (common word typed I suppose) It is good to have one’s stomach “churched.”

    aiwagner54,

There are no two sides to morality-murder is murder. If a young woman or young man have doubts about contraception (abortifacients all) or abortion, they have plenty of places to find out besides a so-called Catholic college. And, Alverno is not the only one doing this. When I was at Notre Dame, one of the first things the doctor at the clinic-Notre Dame Health Services-asked me was whether I wanted birth-control pills. I was shocked and expressed that I was a Catholic. The physician said he was instructed to offer the pills.

Either one is Catholic and presenting the Truth or one is relativistic and presenting Satan’s and the world’s lies. There is no in-between regarding abortion or contraception.

Ten Catholic Colleges That Promote Abortion

Parents wondering what their hard-earned money is supporting at Catholic colleges and universities might be interested in the latest findings from the Cardinal Newman Society.

The organization has discovered 10 Catholic colleges and universities that are promoting student internships with organizations whose missions or activities are directly opposed to the Church’s moral teachings on issues related to abortion and marriage.

“Under what definition of ‘Catholic education’ do students receive academic credit to work for leading pro-abortion organizations?” asked Patrick Reilly, president of The Cardinal Newman Society.

The “Dirty Deca” includes the following schools:

Boston College – recommends opportunities for students to work ‘pro bono’ for the Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts.

College of St. Benedict & St. John’s University – the school’s Gender and Women’s Studies program promotes internship opportunities with the pro-abortion Feminist Majority Foundation and organizations supporting same-sex marriage.

DePaul University – the institution’s Women’s and Gender Studies program offers credit for internships, noting that students have interned with abortion provider Planned Parenthood and the Chicago Women’s Health Center, which offers emergency contraceptive services and alternative insemination for “lesbians, bisexual, and queer couples, single women of any sexual orientation, and trans people.”

Georgetown University – permits students to receive universityfunding for interning at abortion advocacy organizations.

Loyola University of Chicago – their website lists opportunities for internships and volunteer opportunities at Chicago’s National Organization for Women, the Feminist Majority Foundation, Planned Parenthood, and the Chicago Abortion Fund.

St. Edward’s University – has allowed students to work at NARAL Pro-Choice Texas to fulfill a “Community Service in Women’s Studies” credit requirement.

St. Norbert College – – the college’s Women’s and Gender Studies program recommends internships at several pro-abortion and same-sex marriage promoting organizations, including NOW, Legal Momentum, Planned Parenthood, the National Women’s Health Network, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and PFLAG.

University of Notre Dame – the university’s Gender Studies program offers internships for academic credit at places such as the National Organization for Women.

University of San Francisco – the school’s Media Studies program has promoted internships with the California Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League and Girlfriends Magazine.

Supertradmum, I agree with you. I just think that people will be able to counter the lies of groups like the ACLU and the pro-abortion groups if they read what they are putting out first. Thus, linking to those groups, as well as the pro-life groups, could be a valuable service. There should have been a disclaimer that these groups oppose church teaching but we are linking to them so that you can keep an eye on what they are saying.

You don’t seriously have a problem with the notion of reading up on one’s adversary and knowing what he is up to, do you?

  9. Jerry says:

Apparently it is time to change the school’s motto (_In Sanctitate et Doctrina_ – in holiness and learning).

  10. Elly says:

Supertradmum, thank you for that list. It makes me so sad though. So would you recommend not donating money to any of those colleges?

  11. TonyLayne says:

@ Cristero: Under Ven. John Paul II’s Apostolic Constitution Ex corde Ecclesiae, the local ordinary has the responsibility for deciding whether a college can be considered a Catholic institution. There are precedents for declaring a college “no longer Catholic”. But in practice, it seems the bare minimum is for the theologians to possess a mandatum, at least in theory.

Alverno College is in Milwaukee, and hence within the scope of HE Abp. Jerome Listecki, who just took over the archdiocese in November. I don’t know how far up this question is on his agenda. Perhaps the protesters should take their concerns to him?

  12. Robert_H says:

Here’s the link to their campus ministry. They only have 6 “masses” scheduled for the year. Nothing about a daily or Sunday Mass. But don’t worry – there’s always the labyrinth, or a drum circle, or the COEXIST group.

This little bit is worrisome, as well.

    “Liturgical Ministry

Campus Ministry welcomes readers, planners, cantors, and Eucharistic ministers to assist at catholic and interfaith worship services. The goal is to enhance the community experience with the gifts of those gathered to celebrate.”
