Oh PLEEEEZZE let this be true! Mexican company Bimbo may save Twinkies

I am not making this up.  This is not a fluff piece.

From HuffPo (if they can be believed about anything):

Bimbo & Twinkies: Mexican Mega Bakery May Save Brands From Hostess Liquidation

Grupo Bimbo, a Mexican company that is the world’s largest bread baker, might hold the key to saving the Twinkie from extinction in a Hostess liquidation.

Though other companies have shown interest in buying some of Hostess’ iconic brands, Bimbo might have the inside track, according to the Christian Science Monitor.

  1. Bimbo? I thought that word rang a bell and so I looked it up to see if my old memory was serving me correctly. Yep, I was right. We will be eating Twinkies, Ding Dongs, and Hostess Cupcakes that are foolish, stupid, or inept, and wearing too much make-up. Oh well, as long as they are still available, who cares. I hope Bimbo saves the day.

Yay, I love Bimbo! They brought flour tortillas to ready access in Beijing supermarkets, and make the best non-bakery bread on the shelves, including two kinds of good multi-grain bread. Their little bear mascot appears on local TV spots in rather surreal commercials in which children turn down their mother’s cooking but happily go gaga over food presented by him. The name is only the crowning touch on the awesomeness that is Bimbo!

Grupo Bimbo, the largest baking product company in the world, already bought Sara Lee last year.

    Que bueno!

Wasn’t there a lawsuit a couple of years ago involving Hostess & Bimbo? Bimbo, IIRC, was accused of poaching a Hostess executive and all his “institutional knowledge” including privileged and confidential forecasts, recipes, etc.

Or was it Bimbo and another company?

Oh have a heart Fr. Z, some of us are British and haven’t a clue what you are on about. I made the mistake of clicking on the link and looking at the pictures. Stomach churning stuff, not to mention the jingling of fillings. If you have to show us pictures of food, can you stick to the Italian grub please? Now that you are aware of the deep wounds you are inflicting on European culinary sensibilities by exposing us to such sensory horrors you are forewarned that on the next occasion you do so it will be a sin and you must go to confession. Immediately.

Bimbo owns most of the major bakery brands in the United States, including Freihofer’s and Entenmann’s. The products I’ve tried under its Mexican brands, Bimbo and Marinela, have been dry and tasteless. (Though some would claim the same about Hostess products.)

If Bimbo buys out Hostess, it is free to change any of the formulas for the Hostess products, except for the Orange Cupcakes. A merciful God would spare my beloved Orange Cupcakes such a fate.

Is it too much for me to hope that Tastykake comes to my neck of the woods and fills the crushing void left by Hostess?

Meanwhile, there are over 12,000 active listings on eBay for Hostess snacks.

Since our move to Wayne, I drive by the big hostess/ Drakes factory here, on the way to drop hubby at the commuter bus to NYC. It has been sadly idle the last two days. I look forward to The Invasion of Los Bimbos and the resumption of activities at the plant (not to mention, the reappearance of Twinkies and hostess Cupcakes on the shelves)!

  9. JonPatrick says:

They’re free to change the formulas – Jalapeno flavored Twinkies, anyone? :)

muv: How did the Oreo work out in the UK? Last I read, you lot were horrified at the idea of dunking anything in milk. :)

Am I missing something ? I do not care about that Twinkie, in fact aside from the employment loss for folks, I welcome the loss of the Twinkie and all things Hostess. Little Debbie can go too. There are so many *delicious* things that can be made or even purchased that are made with real food ingredients and fresh. What is the obsession over corny cakes infused with hydrogenated oils and unpronounceable ingredients ? I don’t get it.

  12. Supertradmum says:

Hey, if Bimbo buys Hostess, does that mean that our unemployed college leavers could emigrate to Mexico to work in the new factories?

  13. JordanH says:

Unfortunately, the Bimbo in Grupo Bimbo is pronounced Beam-Bo, so once that gets around, poking fun at the name will be less fun.

  14. Jerry says:

Sicilian Woman – Tastykake was purchased by another company last year and has been expanding distribution since; we can even get them in OK now. There is a store locator on their web site (tastykake.com).

  15. joan ellen says:

Stopped in a local Mexican Restaurant/Store late yesterday afternoon. The store had many Bimbo items for sale. I bought a Bimbolete for 99 cents. It could become a chocolate/sugar fix choice since it was not too bad tasting.
