Orant et laborant!

I was sent a photo of the nuns unloading the boxes of their new CD, to be launched tomorrow.  (Links before to pre-order and order.)

ORIGINAL POST:

Let Advent be Advent.

As the pages tear off the calendar and we approach the end of the liturgical year, I want to point you to a new music CD for Advent from the wonderful Benedictine nuns in the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph, the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles.

I have mentioned them before HERE.  I did a review of their Christmas CD HERE.

They now have a new album for Advent!   It is available for NOW.

They sent me a copy of the new disk of music appropriate for Advent.

There are zillions of Christmas music offerings out there.  Advent?  Not so much.

This disk can help you keep Advent as Advent.

Here are a few little samples.

Buy a CD.

Be mindful of Advent.

Help the nuns.

If I may make a couple of suggestions of Catholic Advent music, my first would be “Music for Advent II” by the Schola Cantorum of St Peter’s in the Loop, Chicago, mostly traditional. And OCP’s “Verbum Caro: Music for Advent Lessons and Carols” is not a bad collection, even if it lacks a few of my favorites and has a few too many that tread into the 25th. Go figure. I focus on the good parts. From the Anglican side there are also several good Lessons & Carols services available, including the new “Advent at Merton”–which will probably appeal most to those who like 20th century choral arrangements.

The sisters sound very good, too–did not mean to replace, only supplement. My 1000-mile drive home each Advent requires more than 45 minutes of music!

Tragically, no “On Jordan’s Bank,” which is one of my favorites.

The College of Saint Mary Magdalen has an Advent CD that I like. It can be found, with their other CDs, here:

    I’ve got this on order.

I ordered mine on the sisters’ website and received it several days ago. It is beautiful (some have complained on Amazon that the chant is too emotional, but while the sisters’ technique might be debated, it is very lovely music and you can feel the prayer behind it, so I give it two thumbs up)! I taught my 1st-3rd graders the “refrain” to the Rorate caeli and had them sing along with the sisters’ cd yesterday in class. They all wanted to see pictures of the nuns who sang so beautifully!

I just ordered mine. I noticed this: the CD at Amazon is selling at #183 in Music, #10 in Music > Classical and #32 in Music > Miscellaneous > Holiday! How great is that?
P.S. I didn’t find the CD available at this time on their own website.

  7. Mary Ann says:

Correction: I did find an order link on the home page here: http://benedictinesofmary.org/ —oddly, there is no listing under their “Recordings” page.

Have just bought a couple of copies – one will be a gift (thanks for the link, Fr Z), unfortunately they have to come to the UK so I will have to be very patient!

Perhaps controversial, but it seems so rare that chant is sung well by female voices – the Sisters, however, sing beautifully in the samples I have listened to.

  9. Gretchen says:

Bought mine days ago and have listened to it approximately 10 times through. It is wonderful and I will keep it playing for the next several weeks as Advent progresses.

  10. TopSully says:

I received mine last night when I returned from work. I have it loaded up in the CD player for my ride home tonight.

  11. eben says:

Ordered mine a few minutes ago. I ordered from their website listed above. At the website, they state: “When you purchase Advent at Ephesus from our website, a significant amount of the proceeds will go directly to our community. The funds will assist us in paying the remaining debt on the guesthouse in which we live. We can then begin to look towards our goal of the construction of our permanent monastery building.”

  12. New Sister says:

I was sad to see the “Echoes of Ephesus” CD is no longer produced – they are selling used for $68 on Amazon! :-(

  13. Mary Ann says:

Received today and am playing now—so beautiful! I just checked with the Amazon listing for best selling categories for the CD: #10 in Music (See Top 100 in Music), #1 in Music > Classical. #4 in Music > Miscellaneous > Holiday. How great for the nuns!
