An exercise in fine noontime dining!

I had a hankerin’ for a sandwich today. Off to Firehouse!

Do you have these stores where you are? Great sandwiches, founded by firefighters, friendly… did I mention the great sandwiches?

They offer different ways to support firefighters too. Check them out sometime.

New Jersey is known for its “Sub Shops”. The local mom & pop ones are generally way better than the chains (Subway, etc).

That being said, there is a Mr. Subs in town, which is what I would call a “local chain” – 4 locations in Central NJ. Their “Turkey and Bacon Club” is a hit with my family, and I have a family of picky eaters. They all love it when I bring one home.

Your selection looks great, Fr. And there’s nothing quite like a good garlic pickle to go with a sandwich like that. Glad to see they include one.

There is a Firehouse near(ish) where I live. I’ve heard it’s very good, but haven’t tried it yet. And oh what I would do for a nice crunchy dill pickle right now!

Mmmmm, Father, why did you have to post that picture? Now I’m going to have to go get one tonight… :P

Fr. Z, if you ever come to visit the San Francisco Bay Area, be sure to check out the sandwiches at Mr. Pickles! They are a local chain where the food is so good, that there seldom isn’t a line out the door!

Having lived in Milwaukee and Madison some years ago, I grew to enjoy Cousins subs, and we always make a stop when we visit my in-laws in the Milwaukee area. And we stock up on New Glarus Brewery’s Spotted Cow beer!

    YUM!

Father.. you have great taste in food. .. except for that squirrel thing you posted maybe a year ago.

  8. St. Jude. That “squirrel thing” was really good, by the way.

They have them around here but I’ve never tried one…Jimmy John’s is my favorite sub place at the moment, perhaps I’ll have to try Firehouse sometime!

What was on that sandwich, Father? Looks like turkey or chicken maybe. As for national chains, my favorite so far is not Quiznos or Subway but Potbelly’s!!

That looks like a good way to plug up your arteries.

Looks like a “Hook & Ladder” sub! I love Firehouse. They have an impressive selection of hot sauces, and their new fancy soda fountain is pretty nifty, too.

Reminds me of when I was still going in to work. Every morning I would stop in at Subway and buy a sandwich to keep on my desk until lunchtime. My boss supplied the soda. Yuumm! Even though I ate Subway every day for quite a while, I never got tired of it.

  14. Mari Kate says:

    I like the pickle.

I went to a Firehouse a few years ago for the first time for lunch. There were actual firefighters there eating, and they got a call and had to leave!

    Father,

I just had surgery on my knee (simple arthroscopy with medial meniscectomy) and am lying all stoved up at home. Today my parents came buy with my favorite sandwich, bless them.

Here in Maine we have a sandwich called an Italian. Any Mainer will tell you it’s the soft roll that makes the sandwich.

Depietro’s is located right across from the Cathedral in Portland.

Rob in Maine… looks delicious then I looked at the other sandwiches they have and…
the Olive Tapenade Grilled Cheese made me drool…. YUMMY.
