URGENT PRAYER REQUEST: Tom Peters (american papist)

I am getting reports that the young papist, Thomas Peters, was injured – perhaps severely – in an accident of some kind.  Tom is the son of the great canonist Ed Peters, by the way.

More information will come in soon, but in the meantime, please stop now and say a prayer, perhaps the Memorare, for Thomas and his family.

UPDATE:

See Ed Peters comment below, which I reproduce here:

This is deeply appreciated, Pater. Thom fractured his neck in a swimming accident last evening. I’ll try to keep folks informed on my facebook page. Oremus pro invicem. EdP

At his Facebook page he said:

Thomas Peters was seriously hurt in a swimming accident Tuesday evening. He fractured his 5th cervical vert. and is at Univ. Maryland Medical Center (Baltimore).Natalie Zmuda Peters is there, and the moms Angela & Becky Z flew out a couple hours ago. He moved an arm on command and is undergoing more tests. He has responded pretty well to the immediate steps taken for him so far. I will stay in touch here. Your prayers and well wishes are deeply appreciated.

UPDATE 18 July:

From Ed Peters…

Thom can move his arms, docs are discussing the best treatment for his neck injury. Immediate concern is for the considerable water in his lungs.

And then later…

Thomas Peters remains in critical but stable condition with a cervical spinal cord injury. His lungs are looking better.

UPDATE 18 July 18:15 GMT

From Ed Peters:

Please continue your prayers for Thom. Docs are assessing range of motion issues today and need to decide about treating his neck injury. His temperature is returning to normal and his lungs look better which is good news!

I can scarcely imagine how difficult it must be for a young healthy man who is used to engaging in extensive work and service, in the blink of an eye, to suddenly have to become the pure recipient of all that attention, and to just have to accept others’ outpourings toward him.

More when I have it, and thank you all so much.

  16. Suburbanbanshee says:

Life is full of uncertainties, and accidents are one of the scarier ones. But Mr. Peters has a very flexible sort of brain, I’d guess, because he has so many interests in such different areas. Praying and hoping, and leaning on Ven. Sheen for his prayers.

  17. Choirmaster says:

Offering prayers for Thomas. Special prayers also for Ed’s consolation in this time of unimaginable anxiety.

  18. I’d be remiss to not offer my afternoon rosary for his complete and speedy recovery…and, in all things, God’s will be done.

Offering prayers for Thomas and his family. I first got “hooked” on the Catholic blogosphere many years ago when Thomas was blogging on American Papist….that may have even been how I found this blog!

  24. Justalurkingfool says:

Being less than a wholehearted fan of Dr. Peters give me much reason to, gladly, pray for Thomas.

Could I ask you, Father Z, to seek prayers for the marriage of Bud and Marie “Bai” Macfarlane? Ten years ago, today, June 17th, Mr. Macfarlane abandoned their marital home.

Much more support is needed for broken homes, to restore them, than is currently available in the Catholic Church.

  25. gracie says:

I’m so sorry to hear about Tom’s swimming accident. I hear he can move his arm which is great news. My son had a diving accident years ago and completely recovered from it and God willing so will Tom.

  26. Sandy says:

Praying now! I can understand exactly what the family is going through. The Lord and His Saints will intercede, as they did for my daughter when she was thrown from her horse, and had to have surgery on her neck. It is truly frightening when you first hear this kind of news.

Karl, that is so interesting you would mention the Macfarlanes b/c I was just thinking of them a couple of days ago. Bud’s books and their ministry were wonderful. May the Lord work a miracle for them, even now!

Heartfelt prayers for Thomas and his wife, and his dear mom and dad. I will remember them at Mass and beg the Lord to look after this young man who has been such an immense blessing to the Church, a soldier for the unborn, defender of the Christian family and an inspiration to countless young people. I am very shaken and sad at this news, as if one of my own siblings was in suffering.

So distressed when I read this news yesterday morning. Reading the comments especially that masses are being offered is wonderful-the most powerful prayer of all. Started a novena to Servant of God Fr Vincent Capodanno as this fine young man has been bravely fighting the good fight over the years & is now fighting a personal one to recovery from his injuries.

  47. JoyfulMom7 says:

I have been praying frequently ever since I heard this sad news yesterday. Many of us have also shared the prayer request on Facebook. Thomas is much loved. Prayers also for his wife and parents.

    Jesus, I trust in you!

  48. Ellen says:

I’m still praying for Thomas. I am going to ask the intercession of Father Emil Kapuan, Pierre Toussaint and Cardinal John O’Connor. Al of them were strong witnesses of the faith like Thomas Peters is. May he have a full recovery. Please keep us posted.

  49. Lin says:

    Sending more prayers, today!
