15 Aug – D. Madison – Pontifical Mass at the Throne (& your Masses?)

On the Feast of the Assumption (a holy day of obligation) there will be a Pontifical Mass at the Throne celebrated by His Excellency Most Reverend Robert C. Morlino (aka the Extraordinary Ordinary), at Noon at the Bishop O’Connor Center.

Also, I hear that there will be a Pontifical Mass at the Throne on 14 September in San Francisco, at Star of the Sea Church.

It is good to see Holy Mass is being celebrated in this way more often these days.

We have a lot to recover.

What is going on where you are?

Sadly, not a holy day of obligation everywhere. Certainly not in Canada…and I find parishes rarely make an effort to have any extra masses to accommodate people working on an otherwise regular Friday. EF oriented parishes, on the other hand, will usually have a solemn mass scheduled for later in the evening.

Around the Washington, D.C., area, while I know of no Pontifical Masses for the Feast of the Assumption, there are Traditional Latin Masses scheduled all through the day, as well as at least three Vigil Masses in the Extraordinary Form. Deo gratias!

At Saint Raymond’s in Fairfax Station (Springfield), Virginia, the first-ever traditional Latin Mass on an obligatory day there will be offered at 7 p.m. on 15 August. It will be a Missa Cantata offered by the pastor, with a diocesan seminarian as MC and a local professional men’s choir singing a William Byrd ordinary among other music.

At the Holy Rosary Church in Portland, Oregon, on the Feast of the Assumption, there will be a Solemn Pontifical High Mass according to the 1962 Missale Romanum, celebrated by the Most Reverend Basil Meeking of Christchurch, New Zealand. This is part of the William Byrd Festival (http://byrdfestival.org) currently going on in the area. In addition, there will be three Solemn Pontifical Masses according to the 1970 Missale Romanum this coming and the following weekends at the Holy Rosary Church and St Stephen.

I will be going to mass and procession at the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help near Green Bay, WI. It is the only church approved apparition site in the country. Bishop Ricken will be the Principal Celebrant this year.

Last year Cardinal George came up from Chicago to be the Principle Celebrant. It was a beautiful day, and there were thousands in attendance without any Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion as priests assumed this role. Other than the evangelicals condemning us along the road on the way to the shrine, it was a perfect day.

6:30 PM Mass in the Extraordinary Form at the Basilica of Sts. Peter & Paul, Lewiston. This will probably be a Missa Cantata. Both Masses celebrated by Fr. Robert Parent, chaplain for the St. Gregory the Great Latin Mass Chaplaincy.

Miami has a vibrant TLM community. We now have 4 regular venues celebrating the mass. Also, often the ADOM Cathedral as well as other churches will celebrate TLM. Friday is one of those non-regular masses:

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Friday, August 15 is the Feast of the Assumption of the B.V.M., a Holy Day of Obligation. Fr. Christian Saenz will celebrate a Solemn High Mass at Gesù Catholic Church at 118 NE 2nd St. in downtown Miami. Mass will begin at 7:30 p.m., immediately followed by a potluck reception in the Parish Hall downstairs. All are welcome to bring a dish to share and leave it in the parish Hall before Mass.

If you are in Miami Dade, Broward or even Palm Beach counties, please consider attending this for your holy day of obligation fulfillment.

If you are in the Sarasota, FL area on Friday, the 15th, there will be a High Mass at Christ the King Chapel on Meadowood St. at 6:30 pm. The Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Joshua Passo FSSP. Father was ordained a priest on May 31, 2014 and if you have not received his First Blessing which carries a Plenary Indulgence, he may give it to you if you ask him after the Mass.

    Ave Maria!
