Fr. Z’s Ash Wednesday Kitchen: Sandwich 101 et al.

Sandwich. Easy. Right? At Sandwich 101 level, I’ll share just one tip.

When you prepare a sandwich, always make sure to bring your to-be-sandwiched additives all the way to the edges of your bread.

Sandwich 102 will deal with dividing.

Meanwhile, remember that Liquidum Non Frangit Ieiunium (HERE).  Liquidum taken for thirst, of course.

I just happen to have available a “Liquidum non frangit ieiunium” mug!  HERE

FASTING: Catholics who are 18 year old and up, until their 59th birthday (when you begin your 60th year), are bound to fast (1 full meal and perhaps some food at a couple points during the day, call it 2 “snacks”, according to local custom or law – call it, two snacks that don’t add up to a full meal) on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday.

There is no scientific formula for this.  Figure it out.

ABSTINENCE: Catholics who are 14 years old and older are abound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent.

In general, when you have a medical condition of some kind, or you are pregnant, etc., these requirements can be relaxed.

For Eastern Catholics there are differences concerning dates and practices.

You can, today, eat alligator.   Also, in Michigan you can eat muskrat.

It is permissible to put cream in your coffee and lemon in your tea.

That sandwich looks far too delicious for Ash Wednesday. It would be no fast (penance) for many people to eat that at one of the two permitted “snacks”. Why not a piece of plain bread or toast instead? A little bit of going hungry never killed anyone. After all, there are only two whole days in the whole year when we are required to fast.

    As my wife reminds me
“crust to crust is a must”

    Strawberry jelly? [Apricot!]

Ah, I see Father that you are a man of culture as well.

I also had one today, cut in half with one half at breakfast and one at lunch. I was rather hungry when dinner arrived. I really liked your explanation of “two small SNACKS” which helped me to gauge what/how much to eat.

    Grazie mille.

My favorite bread fast. How about no sugar tonight in my coffee, no sugar tonight in my tea?

Good grief! I’m getting old! Yesterday (Ash Wednesday), I worried that I hadn’t really kept the fast properly – my two cold snacks added up to what I would normally eat for lunch and I had a normal, but meat-free, dinner in the late evening. But then I discover reading this blog post that, as Sexagesima Sunday 11 days ago was my 59th birthday, I was NOT under a canon law obligation to fast anyway.

I note that a number of bishops are already granting a dispensation and allowing consumption of meat for Friday, March 17, which is the Memorial for Saint Patrick.

    Looks like a quality sandwich!
Since I’m currently breastfeeding and my supply is impacted terribly when I don’t eat enough, I went with an alternative penance instead of fasting. But I recall with longing the time I did the Orthodox fast. THAT was a fruitful Lent.
