19 March – Feast of St. Joseph – Hope of the sick,  Patron of the dying,  Terror of demons,  Protector of Holy Church!

Glorious St. Joseph.

Hope of the sick,
Patron of the dying,
Terror of demons,
Protector of Holy Church,

Back in 2009 I made a PODCAzT – FOURTEEN YEARS AGO?!? – about the hymn sung in the Liturgy of Hours in honor of St. Joseph.

And from the Great Roman a couple years ago.

Bigné di San Giuseppe

Check it out!

I drilled into a beautiful Gregorian chant hymn to St. Joseph in the Liturgia Horarum, the Liturgy of the Hours.

The hymn is Te, Ioseph celebrent and it is in the Liber Hymnarius for 1st and 2nd Vespers for the Feast of St. Joseph.

Also of note, Fr. Hunwicke has comments about his hymn at his fine blog, HERE.

Also we listened to an indulgenced prayer written by Pope Leo XIII, Ad Te Ioseph.

Finally, we hear St. Bernardine of Siena (+1444) preach on our Patron of the Universal Church who is Patron of the dying.

“101. 1. In accordance with the centuries-old tradition of the Latin rite, the Latin language is to be retained by clerics in the divine office.”

“99. … It is, moreover, fitting that the office, both in choir and in common, be sung when possible.” (Sacrosanctum Concilium)

So, those of us bound to the Divine Office in any capacity, should probably have a copy of the Liber Hymnarius, so we can actually….uh….follow the Second Vatican Council – especially if we are using the Ordinary Form of it.

St Joseph, Dispenser of the Treasures of the Sacred Heart…we love that one too. I can never get over that he was so humble and so good but also the HEAD of the Holy Family. I prayed for everybody I could think of at holy mass today all of the Josephs (including my wayward brother and son named for him) but also all of the priests I could think of and all of the dads and anybody with a devotion to good St. Joseph. We are so blessed by such a holy saint to protect and guide us!

Protector of the Holy Church? I’m wondering if he has orders from a Higher Source to sit this one out.

  4. Ite ad Ioseph. Just completed a Novena to him to honor the third year anniversary of my consecration to him.
