Daily Rome Shot 743 – The day before the day!

Instead of a still photo, the video in this tweet is a great example of concelebration Vatican II style. In fact, the video, which I had seen before, was taken during Vatican II. Various bishops and priests all saying Masses together… at separate altars, as it should be. Apologies in advance for the music by Marco Frisina.

You might need to be on Twitter to see this.

The fine Catholic artist Daniel Mitsui is selling some of his originals.  Pretty nice.  HERE

In other good news, after 400 years the Jesuits are leaving Linz, Austria’s Old Cathedral in the hands of Ukrainian Catholics.

“We are becoming fewer and we are getting older. From there we have to concentrate.”

The road to success for sure.  HERE

They will now pursue new and excitingly woke ventures sure to increase their numbers as they inspire young men… or whatever… to follow in their footsteps.

In future, the Jesuit Order and the Province want to focus more on retreats, for more justice, youth and climate protection. For the latter, the first step was taken with an opening of a centre for social-ecological transformation called “Ukama”. “There are some confreres living there who are networking with other climate protection groups and who are dealing with this issue in terms of content. Also from our spirituality,” Bürgler explained. Father Jörg Alt, who participates in protests of the Last Generation and against whom a criminal case has already been initiated, is considered the best-known Jesuit climate protection representative in the German-speaking world. “I carry this along as a form of commitment. Of course, it is important to me that this is non-violent and does not damage anything or anyone,” Bürgler said of Alt’s commitment. In the Order, however, there are also different approaches and methods to the climate protest, the Provincial stated.

White to play and mate in 2.

NB: I’ll hold comments with solutions ’till the next day so there won’t be “spoilers” for others.

TOMORROW is INTERNATIONAL CHESS DAY.

I’m sure you have it marked on your calendars already.  It would be a great day – well, every day is a great day to buy chess stuff.

For some reason I can’t make a specific link to a recommendation.  I recommend a vinyl tournament style board that rolls up and triple-weighted pieces with a bag that has pockets for your pieces and a clock, etc.  You’ll be good to go.  Click the image and search:

SKU COMBO7

The bag comes in various colors including but not limited to pink camo and giraffe.

As per the Jesuits, oh well, good bye.

A young man wanted to know if praying a novena for a Cadillac was morally permissible.

He went to see a Franciscan and asked if it was ok to pray a novena for a Cadillac. The Franciscan said that he does not believe we should pray for Cadillacs as he doesn’t even know what they are.

The young man went to see a Dominican. He asked the same question. The man was given many philosophical reasons as to why he shouldn’t pray a novena for a Cadillac.

Disillusioned the man tried the same question to a Jesuit. He asked the Jesuit, “can I pray a novena for a Cadillac?”

The Jesuit responded, “what is a Novena?”

For 100ish years the Jebbies had St. Ignatius Loyola parish here in the Mile High City. Last month they relinquished it for reasons that should be obvious. Fortunately it’s being taken over by the Congregation of St. John who seem pretty solid to me. One of them helps out at the Cathedral.

  3. Imrahil says:

    I don’t have a mate in 2.

    I do have 1. Qc1+ RxQ+ 2. RxR Kxf4 3. Rf4++. Though I rather suspect I’d run into a stalemate very quickly in a bar setting.

  4. palestrinadei says:

“Ukama” reads like a tortured portmanteau of “Ukraine” (taking over the cathedral) and “Obama” (whose agenda these Jesuits are following as they “concentrate”).

The enemy king has no legal moves, so needs to be attacked where it is. To do that effectively, first remove the final defender while leaving one useless move available.
    1. dxc5 d4 (only legal move)
    2. Qc1#

  5. A.S. Haley says:

Not sure I understand either of the previously offered solutions. Imrahil, after 2. RxR, how can Kxf4 follow? The Black King is already on f4. So you must mean: 2. … Kxf3. In which case, I grant you, 3. Rf1 is mate, but as you acknowledge, that is a mate in 3 moves, not 2.

palestrinadei, after 2 Qc1#, Black can play 2. … Kxe5, since the pawn on e5 is no longer defended after dxc5.

But you are right that the Black King has no legal moves, while the Black Rook blocks the White Queen’s ability to apply check via the f8 square. So that suggests the solution is to force the Black Rook to move, while not allowing it to apply check to the White King: 1. Rb1! Now the Black Rook must move, but to where? If he goes to c1 (or any other legal square on the c file), the White Queen goes to f8, and Black’s King is checkmated. And if the Black King chooses to play 1. … Kxf3, White moves his Rook back to f1, mate.
