Meanwhile, white to play and mate in two.

NB: I’ll hold comments with solutions ’till the next day so there won’t be “spoilers” for others.

In the AI Cup Magnus defeated Nakamura in rapid.  In Amsterdam for the Levitov Chess Week, Peter Svidler and Ian Nepomniachtchi have a 2-point lead over their closest rivals. Four rounds to go.

    1. Rf6! Black has one of three legal moves:

    If …. PxR, then 2. BxP is mate. If instead …. g7g5, the Rook moves to any square to discover check by the Bishop, which is mate.
    And if Black plays …. g7g6+,
    2. RxP++ likewise discovers checkmate.

    1. Q to e5, B must move (f7, e6…)
    2. Q x g7 mate

    Impossible configuration.

    Black pawn structure cannot arise in play.

    Puzzle Abuse.

    Reminds me of the upcoming Synod on synodality. Or whatever they call it.

  4. Imrahil says:

    No, I don’t see it. The black bishop can so easily put the white king in check on g7 (once we’ve moved the queen some place else) and thus, not hinder mate, but hinder mate in two.

    How I’d play is
    1. Bc5 g6+ (g5 is mate by 2. Bd4++ back)
    2. Kh4 g5+ (black pawn is protected, black hopes for a 3. Kg4 stalemate blunder)
    3. Kh4 g4 (black hopes to advance to queen, and also has no other move)
    4. Bd4++.

    & Our Lady of Happy Assembly

    Gentlemen, Rook to b6 does not result in mate in two per the premise. Black need only push his pawn to place king in check, Pawn to g6x, requiring at least three moves for mate. The only mate in two is what AmenAmenDicoVobis plays. Q to e5. Black then must force move his bishop, it matters not whither.

    Cheers!

    ROFL!

    I am compelled to respond more fully in the next pic post.

  9. Imrahil says:

    Dear brotherbeowulf,

    no.

    1. Qe5 Bf7+, and white must save his king in the second rather than checkmating (which he will do later, though).
