ROME 23/10 – Day 34: IMPROVISE – ADAPT – OVERCOME

The Roman rising of the sun was at 06:42.  The Roman setting of the same will be at 19:05.

The Ave Maria bell is still on the 17:30 cycle.

It is a 1st Friday.

Yesterday was NOT Friday, and I indulged in some meat.   Specifically sausage (savory) and chicken (free range).

Free range pepperoni as well.  In Italian these are pepperoni… not to be confused with American pizza toppings.

I set everything to get some color in separate pans (I only have small, here), and then combined and readied all for the oven.  Just at the end, I added peas.

BTW… your use of my Amazon affiliate link is a major part of my income. It helps to pay for insurance, groceries, everything. Please remember me when shopping online. Thanks in advance.  US HERE – UK HERE

I wanted a sauce, so I took everything out of the pan.  Suddenly I realized I didn’t have much of anything as a thickening agent, so as to make a roux, and I also wanted volume.    So, …

IMPROVISE – ADAPT – OVERCOME

I had a little butter and a bottle of white wine and… fiber supplement capsules.  Psillium.

A good slosh of dry white wine, a few caps and… ecco!  Gravy.  Really good, too.   Great consistency.   I’ve gotta remember this.  No “floury” taste.

I ate about half of what I prepared and the rest went into the fridge for tomorrow.

And this is for a friend.   Thanks for the apron.

You can get one of those t-shirts, btw, from my swag store.    It has the Memorare in many languages on the back, to be recited daily for the overturning of a certain cruel act.

Tonight… clams from the fishmonger.

These aren’t clams, but it is at the fishmonger.

I just like writing “fishmonger”

And on the way home from the fishmonger, a truck was stocking a local butcher.

In the Vetus Ordo it is a dies non, so I said a Requiem Mass today and my intention was for my deceased benefactors, those I know of and those whom I don’t.   When I receive word that someone who was a donor has died, I make a note of it and remember them in my prayers on their former giving days.

As a matter of fact, the “daily Requiem” Mass formulary, as an optional set of orations precisely for benefactors.   Here is the Postcommunio.  Would someone like to have a crack at it?

Not just Latin puzzles….

…white to move.  Good luck.   This is hard.

NB: I’ll hold comments with solutions ’till the next day so there won’t be “spoilers” for others.

Always love seeing your food photos.
Question, FrZ: You’ve mentioned how being in the familiar streets of Rome boosts your spiritual well-being, but I’m also wondering if after being there for weeks at a time, can you tell a difference in your physical health due to the quality of food?

[The food and the walking have helped. Another reason to spend more time here!]

  2. Synonymous_Howard says:

    1. gxh7+ Kxh7 [Problem: the King doesn’t have to take h7! Kh8!]
    2. Qc2+ Kh8 (Kh6 is met with Qg6#)
    3. Qh2+ Kg8
    4. Qg2+ Kf8 or Kh8
    5. Qg7#

  3. Kevin Fogarty says:

    Psillium for flour = genius

[Sometimes you have to scan what you do have and think fast.]

One of the sad realities of modern living is there are not enough Fishmongers.
    Dinner looks great!

  5. dholwell says:

Apologize in advance for the poor chess notation.

    G6xh7! Kxh7
    Q h3! K g8
    Q g4! k f8 or k h8
    Q-g7#

  6. APX says:

Do the bunnyhugs also have the Memorare on the back, or is it just the t-shirts?

    [Ummm…. I… don’t know what “bunnyhugs” are.]

  7. Matthew111 says:

    1. h7+ Kf8
    2. h8Q# [So black probably won’t choose Kf8, I’m guessing]

    OR

    1. h7+ Kxh7 [Black isn’t forced to take h7.]
    2. Qh3+ Kg8
then walk the queen closer for mate. If the king hides behind the f7 pawn check with the bishop and nab the queen

    OR

    1. h7+ Kh8
    2. Qc3 sets up for a passive check and an opportunity to subsequently bring the queen closer. It also protects c6. Any other check black makes would kill their queen.

[Problem: Qc3 allows black to take the bishop Qxd8+ … with check. The black keeps checking while Black’s uses white h7 pawn like a shield.]

There are a lot of possibilities here but I think this is the skeleton.

Looks delicious, can you post the recipe?

[Not much to it. Put some color on the meat before it goes into the oven with a splash of wine or broth. Same for the veg. Put it all into the oven and take it out when the internal temp is right. Mine was in for about 20 minutes at 180C. There was juice. Make a roux with flour or improvise. Not much to it.

I’ll take a crack at the Postcommunion:

O almighty and merciful God, grant, we beseech Thee, that the souls of our brethren, neighbors and benefactors, for which (the souls) we have offered up this sacrifice of your praise, may, by thy mercy, attain the supreme happiness of eternal light, being purged of all sins by the power of this sacrament.

The past participle usually comes out awkward in my translations, but I hate to translate it as a co-main-verb (“may be purged… and may attain…”)

The ablative absolute also seems to lose force, since the pronoun ‘te’ becomes an adjective ‘thy’. But any translation with a pronoun is clumsy.

    ‘I just like writing “fishmonger”’

    Who doesn’t?

  11. JonPatrick says:

Wow 45 euros! Well that is probably for a kilogram, per pound that would be more like 20, maybe a little more than we would pay here.

“Fishmonger” reminds me of going shopping as a child in England with my grandmother, where you would visit in turn the fishmonger, greengrocer, and perhaps the ironmonger (for hardware). At each one there would be a queue as each person is served one at a time, but the time in the queue was useful for catching up on the latest gossip.

  12. That Kxh7 is attractive, but black isn’t compelled to take. The black king can go to h8 and use the white pawn as an umbrella.

So, if Kh8 is going to help black survive, what can throw a spanner into the works?

    1. Bc7.

“Bc7?!???!”, you cry. “But Father! But Father! Are you nuts?”

1.Bc7 eyes h8. Move the white king and discovered check ensues. You have to get the bishop to the a1-h8 diagonal.

    This goes something like…

    1. Bc7 Qxc8 (black’s Q is pinned, so there’s nothing else – Qf8 leads to mate in 2.)
    2. gxf7+ Kh8 (Kf8 3. Bd6#)
    3. Be5 (eyes h8) Qc5 (check the white king and see what happens. Now white’s bishop is under fire. White needs that bishop which has only two squares. NB that black pawn in a5. Do the math. Where does that bishop have to be when that pawn moves forward – a1? b2?)
    4. Bb2! (Ba1??) Nc7
    (Now its pawn v bishop)
    5. Ba1 a4
    6. Bb2 a3 (protected by the Queen)
    7. Ba1 a2
    8. Bb2 a1=whatever
    9. Bxa1 Nd5+
    10. Ke6+ Nc3 (blocks check)
    11. Bxc3+ Qxc3
    12. f8=Q#

  13. APX says:

    Ummm…. I… don’t know what “bunnyhugs” are.
A bunnyhug is a hooded sweatshirt.
