Your Sunday Sermon Notes – 2nd Sunday after Epiphany (N.O.: 2nd Ord) 2024

Too many people today are without good, strong preaching, to the detriment of all. Share the good stuff.

It is the 2nd Sunday of Ordinary Time in the Novus Ordo and the 2nd Sunday after Epiphany in the Vetus Ordo.

Was there a GOOD point made in the sermon you heard at your Sunday Mass of obligation?

Tell about attendance especially for the Traditional Latin Mass.  I hear that it is growing.  Of COURSE.

Any local changes or (hopefully good) news?

I have a few thoughts about the orations in the Vetus Ordo for this Sunday: HERE

Out of lack, loss, and deprivation blessings can come.  In the first reading, the Epistle for Sunday, Paul tells the Romans (12:6-16) to bear up with cheerful generosity and patience in time of tribulation, each according to our proper vocations.

Our Bishop filled in for our Latin Mass this morning because our priest was away on retreat. He preached on the calling of Samuel as a way for us to attune our ears to His Will. He also talked about the necessity of virtue to overcome and withstand the temptations of immorality.
We are very blessed to have him in our diocese.

Father talked about reflecting on whether or not we are disposed to receiving our Lord and hearing the promptings of the Holy Spirit. He also clarified that fornication referred to sex outside of marriage, as well as discussed how pornography and other sins against the 6th commandment and sins of lust are a great danger to us. I wasn’t expecting him to go in that direction.

The canon preached on the meaning of Cana. The first wine, running out, is the grace we lose in sinning, and shame attaches to this loss. Our Lady anticipates the couple’s distress and orders the waiters to obey her Son. The water brought to Our Lord is our tears, i.e. true contrition, brought to Him in the Sacrament of Confession. The new wine is Heavenly Mercy. For the miracle to occur, we must be filled with remorse, and not be dry, as we might be were we still committed to bad habits or spreading scandal. If we need help filling our water jars, we must turn to Our Lady and ask her to guide us as she did at Cana, to show us ourselves.

The church was packed with various people of all ages. Hundreds of them. One of three Sunday Masses. A beautiful schola and choir accompanied by an excellent organist.
The announcements for the numerous activities take a while for the pastor to get through. The youth group is going on a ski trip retreat, seek funds. … March for Life this Saturday … Week of Prayer for and End to Schism … Men of the Holy League … St Francis de Sales Breakfast Club …etc.
A vibrant grace-filled parish led by priests following in the footsteps of St Francis de Sales. Deo gratias.

Homily at Holy Rosary Catholic Church (Houston) Vigil Mass 1/13/24

Focusing mostly on Samuel 3:3b-10,19: Everyone is called by God to do something great.
So many do not hear the call of God because of noise, materialism, sinful actions, etc,
Those who do the hear the call may well wish to ignore it or put it off, mostly due to fear- of inadequacy, or lack of help from God, revelations of sins or brokenness. Etc.
But everyone can overcome fear with trust in and love of God: perfect love casts out fear (1 John 4:18).
So the message I got was to ask for more trust and love.

Homily at Holy Rosary CC Latin Ordinary Form Mass 1/14/24

Focusing mostly on John 1:35-42: Jesus does not wait to call the perfect, he calls us now in our current state. Like the two disciples of John, we should seek to learn how Jesus lives and wants us to live. We should be followers of Christ, not mere admirers of him. (In other words give ourselves wholly to him). Following Christ also means giving up sinful life (1 Cor. 6:13 et seq.)

Pur little SSPX chapel on a wooded NH back road was quite full today. Seems like its growing. Father talked about the importance of marriage done properly. He explained that one could not attend the non-canonical wedding of a Catholic since you consent to it by simply showing up. He also clarified how non-Catholics do in fact have natural, valid marriages since they are not bound by the rules of canonical form, hemce you could attend.

He said your number one priority in getting married is to please God. Although religious life and single celibacy are of higher virtue (or something to that effect) marriage is essential and very virtuous when done right.

Building on the theme of hearing and answering the call, Father asked a fairly direct question today: “How is your prayer life?”
