It was a lovely day in Rome yesterday and it should be splendid again today.
Here’s an interesting shot. First, there are visible together three decidedly Roman things: a Rione sign, a “garbage” sign, a “nasone”. And there is a guy in the background doing something.
He’s putting their new Michelin 2 star sign up. I have not eaten there.
However, I will be eating these tonight: vongole veraci. I picked them up after Mass.
This conclave didn’t have much to say about the General Congregations.
A few points I’ve heard.
- Card. Stella sharply criticized Francis for introducing lay people into Church governance, which requires Holy Orders.
- Card. Parolin – 70 yrs – had a blood pressure incident which I suspect will, along with Card. Zen’s remarks, knock him out. Also, people were not happy with a Mass he said for the Novendiales. He is said to have been campaigning. True? Meh!
- Card. Becciu won’t be voting. I wonder what he knows and is willing to say, not so much to promote a candidate as to knock him out of the running.
- Card. Sarah gave a terrific talk during one of the Congregations, as did Card. Eijk.
People are asking me about whom I believe will be chosen.
I will not rule out Card. Sarah. I believe that even the more deadly libs in the college at least recognize him as a man of deep prayer. He is 79 (second oldest Elector, I think).
I will not rule out Card. Pizzaballa. However, he is only 60. That said, his languages are excellent. He’s Italian. He is in Jerusalem and made quite a bold offer of his own person for hostages in Gaza. There’s something to the almost romantic narrative of the man from Jerusalem coming to Rome to be Pope. People I’ve talked to have divided reports about his stance on the Traditional Roman Rite. The preponderance lands in the side of being at least benign.
As far as ruling in… I don’t know. As the General Congregations go on, more information will be forthcoming even if in drips and drabs.

Meanwhile, here is what we are doing at The Parish™.
What is going on in your parish?
White to move and mate in 3. How fast did you get it?
NB: I’ll hold comments with solutions ’till the next day so there won’t be “spoilers” for others.
At the Cathedral adoration hours (previously just on Sunday before vespers) have been extended to go on during all scheduled confession times – at least an hour each day.
Thank you for your updates on the general congregations. Generally, I am somewhat surprised at how little discussion there has been in the overall media about who is up and who is down. My memory of the 2005 and 2013 conclaves is that there was a lot more discussion about the papabile than there has been this time. Maybe my memory doesn’t serve me, though.
Regardless, it seems to be a contest between Parolin and the not-Parolin candidate. I’m not sure what the main profile of the Parolin supporter is and how they might reassess if he doesn’t have the ability to get 89 votes, though. I suppose if both sides are not too large, we could end up with a Siri vs. Benelli 1978 deadlock scenario that produces a wildcard.
If the sub-Saharan African Cardinals have any say, I think we may be quite happy.
Our parish is offering 24 hour Eucharistic Adoration from Sunday evening, May 4th, until the conclave ends.
Father, thank you for your updates on the Cardinals’ general congregations. Anything you can pass on from what you hear in Rome is of great interest to those of us not able to be there.
I am praying that the electors will turn to Cardinal Sarah. He is actually holy and devout and dedicated to the Deposit of the Faith, something I don’t believe can be said of some other papabile with a straight face. One reason I think he might have a greater chance than is obvious is actually his age. He will soon turn 80, and some people think that rules him out. But I wonder whether, when the progressive/liberal Cardinals see the voting trend not running their way as it did last time, they might not swing behind him because they would prefer a relatively shorter Papacy.
I’d like to call people’s attention to Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith as someone outside of the European/South American axis that isn’t getting attention from normal news sources, but who I think should be looked at by the cardinal electors. If you dig into his background and his writings, you will see someone that the non-heretical liberal cardinals from the peripheries can get behind, along with the more conservative European-minded cardinals. The issues of the European Church are not the issues of the Global Church and many of the cardinals from the outside are quite tired of Catholic Europe exporting its madness to the rest of the Church.
One of the things that I fear, is the tendency of more conservative cardinals to eschew schism more than they eschew heresy, leaning to a Francis II on steroids — ie a candidate that knows how to govern but is fully onboard and then some with the “synodal way” rather than The Way. You will see schism then, with the Global South and the Orient breaking away, akin to what happened in the Anglican Communion.
Great shot of the fish conclave! They may not have had much to say, but it sure looks like they’re trying!
In fact, it appears to me that they know who they want for the next pontiff-
Sar-AH!! ;-)
Prayers for a faithful, holy and Catholic Pope, and a blessed period of healing for the Church.

Took me a few times.
While I have no idea what will happen during the upcoming conclave, I will say that regarding the African Cardinals, Raymond Arroyo had a news brief pertaining to three African Cardinals last Sunday on Fox and Friends Weekend. Rachel Campos Duffy interviewed Raymond Arroyo. Although it was brief it did cover that much of the growth of the Catholic Church in recent decades has taken place in Africa.
Some great looking Seafood !
Robbie – I would think the conclave chatter will shift into high gear on Monday. As for Card Parolin. – Some health issues have become a factor.
What is the name of the new Michelin restaurant?
“[Cardinal Sarah] is 79 (second oldest Elector, I think).”
He turns 80 in June. I feel somewhat guilty. When Pope Francis went into the hospital, I started looking into the Cardinal Electors. When I noticed Cardinal Sarah was turning 80 soon I started praying for a conclave before he turned 80 so he could still vote.
As for being attractive to more liberal and progressive cardinals, he has written about the need for the Church to be loving towards the LGBTQ+ people, albeit through the truth, and he did say that Fr. James Martin is correct that there shouldn’t be a double standard for the requirement of everyone to practice chastity.
Honestly, he just seems like a man of common sense Catholicism that’s clear and unambiguously faithful despite our current Bizarro World. Honestly, I would love for him to become Pope so that we can get more common sense Catholicism and learn how to be faithful Catholics in our current climate.
