  1. Tim Ferguson says:

Minor point, but I believe that Di Noia will be the first titular archbishop of Oregon City, and also that Oregon City is the only titular archdiocese in the US.

  2. Rumold says:

Archbishop Ranjith’s departure will be a big loss to the Congregation. He was fearless and because of that gained few freinds in the Curia. One can only hope that he will be given a red hat at the next consistory and will in time return to the Congregation as its Prefect.
Fr Di Noia has not shown any great interest in liturgy to date so we must just wait and see. In his favour is the fact that when elected provincial of his province in the USA the appointment was cassated by the then Master of the Dominicans one Timothy Radcliffe. No more need be said!

  3. PMcGrath says:

Rumold: What does “cassated” mean? Is that good or bad?

  4. Tim Ferguson says:

cassation is not a positive thing. When a superior cassates an election, that means he tosses out the election and orders a new one to take place.

  5. Aelric says:

If I may be so bold, I believe that Rumold means that being cassated by the likes of Father Radcliffe is a positive sign vis-a-vis Father Di Noia.

  6. Rumold says:

    Aelric you are quite correct.

  7. Fr. Totton says:

I don’t know a great deal about Abp. elect DiNoia – he once addressed my seminary class when we were on pilgrimage in Rome – at the CDF. I would venture to say that Pope Benedict (who cares a great deal about the Sacred Liturgy) knows the man’s strengths thoroughly as the former worked under H.H. when he was Cardinal Prefect of CDF. That fact alone signals good. Yes?

  8. Jeff Pinyan says:

The ordination Mass for Fr. Di Noia is Saturday, July 11th, at the National Shrine Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in DC at 2:00 PM. It is open to the public.

(I think I’m going to be there.)

  9. TNCath says:

Congratulations to Father Augustine! Best wishes to Archbishop Ranjith. We really can’t say we were surprised by these moves. We’ve been reading about Archbishop Ranjith’s impeding move for about a year.

  10. Catherine says:

In Fr. DiNoia, the Holy Father has chosen a brilliant theologian who’s all about Catholic identity. Brick by brick.

  11. JC says:

I believe it will be interesting to keep a close eye on the liturgical aspects of the episcopal consecration of the new Secretary of the CDW. It should be the quintessential opportunity for a “say the black, do the red” ceremony under H.E. Archbihop Wuerl’s roof. A sort of “preaching by example” by the new No. 2 of the CDW.

Since Fr. DiNoia is not yet a bishop, is he the Pro-Secretary? or are these titles no longer used?

  12. David O'Rourke says:

The great thing about Archbishop Ranjith was that he was somewhat assertive about the EF and the Motu Proprio. No doubt Archbishop-Elect DiNoia suppports these things but will he be the chanpion that Archbishop Ranjith was?

Then again, Cardinal Caneres is better for the cause than was Cardinal Arinze who opposed the Motu Proprio and never, to my knowledge celebrated the EF so maybe it all balances out.

At the same time there are other prelates in the Curia now celebrating the EF and Archbishop (soon to be Cardinal)Burke has joined the Curia

  13. Kathy says:

Archbishop-designate DiNoia is smart, devout, cultured, well-read, and above all CLEAR. No doublespeak, none at all, just clarity.

I’m totally going to the ordination.
