“This blog is rather like a fusion of the Baroque ‘salon’ with its well-tuned harpsichord around which polite society gathered for entertainment and edification and, on the other hand, a Wild West “saloon” with its out-of-tune piano and swinging doors, where everyone has a gun and something to say. Nevertheless, we try to point our discussions back to what it is to be Catholic in this increasingly difficult age, to love God, and how to get to heaven.” - Fr. Z

Lent is coming!
In addition to penance, fasting, and confession, the viewing of spiritual films can be a powerful activity during lent.
Pius Media, an on-line Catholic film rental company has an abundant number of films that would be appropriate for lenten viewing.
Beyond lenten interest, if your family, like mine, is interested in family-friendly videos, including children’s videos, classic movies, and movies with a Catholic theme, I highly recommend that you check out Pius Media, which operates just like Netflix, with video rental by mail.

Oh, good! I needed a laugh after this day!
Not funny.
Funny.
Thanks for the link.
At least the Church managed to steal the President’s thunder.
It’s been a long and strange day. I chuckled. Thanks, Father.
Ah…it is a good thing to have a sense of humor and after the tears comes a smile. Thanks, Fr. Z. ^^
Both are laugh out loud funny. Thanks Father!
As Phillip said
“It’s been a long and strange day.”
Thanks Fr. Z. We needed that. It lightened the load.
Nice to smile after a day of shock and tears.
Whoa! That was a page from a tear-off calendar, published last year! Did the Pope have that on his desk or something?
The odds against that are like… winning the lottery. Or… getting struck by lightning.
Still in shock, but now feeling selfish to boot.
He’s leaving quickly, too quickly for me, in any case. But there’s no reason to tarry, is there? He’d like to get out of the way of the next pope.
I wonder if we’ll ever see him again. The thought is heartbreaking. (Can anyone imagine Obama quietly “retiring”?)
Great cartoons, Father.
Extremely sad. What glorious 7 years of reign !! Now to loose him!!! Very painful to even think about it. But unable to not think about it. We are losing our Shepherd !!! I am in deep mourning. The loss is just too much. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us and your Vicar Benedict XVI.
I looked it up. “Strohsack” = lit. “straw mattress” or “a donkey’s breakfast.”
Which part of the phrase in the first comic is given up?
: )
God bless y’all
Thank you Father Z – I needed to good laugh and a smile. The strips are harmless and cute – no disrespect meant or taken. Boy, I’m going to miss him terribly. I feel like he has actually died :(

Like Lauren, I, too, am feeling bereaved. I fully understand his need to retire – he is about 2 years older than my priest brother, who constantly feels exhausted. I miss him already, and will be looking for every chance to see him (on tv or the internet) for the rest of the month – and longer.
Both of the cartoons were hilarious, but I particularly liked the first one.
Kuendige, literally “to give notice.”
Technicalities, I know, but from what I’ve researched, a resignation noun form would be “Rücktritt” and the verb is zurcktreten.
Sorry, that should be “zurücktreten.” Seems I hit cut, instead of copy, when grabbing the “ü”.
“Kündigen”, as used here, is the standard term for to quit (or whatever the usual word in English is) a job.
