My View For While: Domum

Again… back to home and hearth.

Well… home and hot plate.

UPDATE

Well that was pretty dreadful.

Now for Round 2.

  3. … perhaps, I should ask, overarching?

    ” , , , and hotplate”

Got me to thinking and remembering.

Thinking: What, besides pasta sauces and stews, could be made on a single hotplate for a small dinner party?

Remembering: I was once at a summer house (prepared for power outages) with a chicken already thawed for roasting, and it was my turn to cook. Power went out. What to do? Use the propane hotplate!

    Here’s what I did:

    1. In a dutch oven, with butter and olive oil, brown the chicken on all sides. Remove.
    2. Add chopped onions and garlic and saute. And add some thyme and parsley.
    3. Put whole celery stalks on top of that, and put the chicken on top of the celery.
    4. Fill pot with white wine up to the bottom of the chicken, cover, and steam the chicken. I forget exactly how long it took, about an hour and a half, iirc. You’ll prob have to add a bit more wine during.
    5. Remove chicken celery to platter and tent with foil.
    6. Add mushrooms to pot and make sauce. Then, put sauce in a thermos.
    7. Make accompanying vegetable in pot.
(All kinds of variations possible, but that is what I did.)

It was some of the most moist chicken I’ve ever had.

Of course for a party, you can do a store-bought appetizer with drinks, serve bread with the main course, salad and cheese afterwards, and a store-bought dessert.

    Just a thought.

Father, do you have a stockpile of food? Nothing crazy, just enough to last a week or two should the SHTF?

Not a rabbit hole at all! As a matter of fact it was a predicted digression!

    Well done.

Thanks, dear Fr.! Are you a Monty Python fan by any chance? :-)
