TENEBRAE – Where? When?

We must all work in a concerted effort to revive the singing of all of Tenebrae, whole and entire, from the older, traditional Office. Not some truncated version of ditties and so forth, as if it were Advent Lessons and Carols in Lent. The whole meghilla, to use a season appropriate word.

Do you know where the offices of Tenebrae are being sung?

I know that my home parish of St. Agnes in St. Paul, MN has Tenebrae on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9:30 and there are confessions.

I just read at Regina that Tenebrae is to be held at St Mary Moorfield’s in London at 9 pm, Wednesday to Friday in Holy week. There are also services at Birmingham Oratory. I’ll be the London Oratory will sing Tenebrae.

How about you? Do you know of other Tenebrae services? The whole thing?

Frankly, the Responses alone make you die inside.

I am not sure it is the 100% authentic version (I am not sure I even know what the 100% authentic version is), but we have a wonderful Tenebrae with Bishop Morlino at the Cathedral Parish of the Diocese of Madison, WI, 7:30 PM Wednesday at Saint Patrick Church on East Main Street downtown. It is actually the Liturgy of the Hours. It definitely involves darkness and a great earthquake.

  3. Mary Jane says:

Mater Dei Parish (FSSP) in Irving, TX. Tenebrae on both Wednesday and Good Friday at 7:30pm. On Wednesday, we will also sing Allegri’s Miserere Mei Deus. On Good Friday, most of the responsories will be the polyphonic versions.

St Timothy’s in Lutz, Florida on Maundy Thursday at 10pm. I believe it’s the 100% version. I’m thankful our pastor has an interest. He had kneelers installed in our sanctuary after he arrived!

Tenebrae is celebrated at the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in Northeast D.C., at 7:30 Wednesday. “Tenebrae” is an ancient service of psalms and readings celebrated as part of Holy Week. At the Franciscan Monastery, the “Suspicious Cheese Lords,” a group dedicated to the preservation of early music from the Middle Ages, unrecorded works of Renaissance composers, and Gregorian chant, will offer the musical reflection for this service.

About 2 hours from DC or Baltimore, in Charles Town WV, the CRNJ have Tenebrae Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 4 AM. Being their office, it’s all plainchant, but they sing really cool tones for the Lamentations. Plus everything is by candlelight, so it’s REALLY dark when it ends.

  24. jkking says:

St. Margaret Mary in the “Athens of the West,” lovely Oakland CA, Thurs, Fri, Sat at 0900.

My favorite part of Tenebrae is when they bang on the pews and stuff to simulate the earthquake… That was amazing.

  25. Mike says:

Great to hear about Indianapolis’ Holy Rosary, a model for vivifying parish life by means of the traditional liturgy. It’s also a beautiful church with a most welcoming congregation. I fondly recall my visit this past January and look forward to going back next time I’m in Indianapolis.

Just for clarification: the tenebrae at St. Patrick Church in Columbus, Ohio that capchoirgirl mentions is not complete. It is, nonetheless, beautiful with responsories from Tomas Lui de Victoria and chanted psalms and lamentations.

With all due respect to the commenter above, I discourage readers of this esteemed blog from attending the “Tenebrae” service at St. Matthew’s Cathedral in DC. This is my home archdiocese. It is a highly “adapted” form of the traditional service (definitely Lessons and Carols for Lent, to use Father Z’s phrase), mostly in English, with adult female servers in high heels and lipstick, etc…if you remember how BAD the music was at Pope Benedict’s Mass at Nationals’ Stadium in 2008, then please know that the man who was responsible for that then, is still the music director at St. Matthew’s now. The Cathedral is a beautiful edifice, miraculously never wreckovated, and full of promise… but bad taste, and low church forces reign supreme there now. Surely you can find a worthwhile alternative across the river in the liturgically sound Diocese of Arlington, or at the communities at the Ordinariate Parish (at Immaculate Conception, downtown), the Dominican House of Studies across from the National Shrine, or the Oratory in formation at St. Thomas in Woodley Park and Franciscan Monastery, as mentioned above.

Just an interesting observation… I googled Tenebrae DFW and the results were largely Protestant denominations. Of the top ten results there was 1 Catholic parish, Mater Dei Latin Mass Parish, that had it scheduled on their site.
