22 February 1980!

In addition to this being the Feast of the Cathedra of Peter, it is also the 37th (can you believe it) anniversary of the Miracle on Ice.

This was one of those moments which you remember so well that you can clearly recall where you were when it happened.

There is a pretty good summary at This Day In History.

I’ll bet there are a lot of young people out there who have no idea what this is.

I wouldn’t be born for a few years, but certainly know of this indelible moment in sports and American history. Kurt Russell was great as the late Herb Brooks in Miracle.

  2. Adaquano says:

Also if I’m not mistaken Brooks was Catholic and his funeral was held at the Cathedral of St. Paul

  3. pelerin says:

Sorry – I am no longer young but have never heard of this! The news obviously never reached Britain then.

  4. Muv says:

Miracle on ice? Torvill and Dean thrashing all opposition at Sarajevo in 1984. Fr. Zed, what are you talking about?

  5. Denis Crnkovic says:

I was tending bar. The TV was at my back. I didn’t get to see much. There was a free round for everyone when it was over. Cheers.

Of other historical import, today is:

The 285th anniversary of George Washington’s birth

The 180th anniversary of Andrew Jackson’s “Great Cheese Levee”

The 110th anniversary of Earnest “Don the Beachcomber” Gantt

I was watching in my parents basement. (No, I did not live in it! I was a teenager and there was a television down there.) The ceiling was one of those drop panel things. When the game was over, and the USA had actually defeated the Soviets, I screamed and jumped up and down like a lunatic even knocking a panel out of the ceiling. And I was so in love with Jim Craig! I can’t believe it has been 37 years. I think my family will have pizza and a movie night this weekend and watch it. My daughter just said it was ‘trending’ and she didn’t know what it was. Need to remedy that. Thanks for the reminder, Father Z.

  8. pelerin says:

Muv – now I do remember Torvill and Dean – Ravel’s ‘Bolero’ wasn’t it?

  9. un-ionized says:

pelerin, Yes, it was Bolero with the lady playing the matador’s cape. It was not just a great idea, they did it flawlessly. I watched every rerun they played of it.

  10. poohbear says:

I was young then, but I remember it. USA vs USSR.

  11. Sconnius says:

My dad and uncle were able to listen to the only live broadcast of the game on the Canadian station they could pick up in the barn while doing chores.

They skipped supper to stay down there after it was tied at the end of 1.
