Open Letter From Cardinal Burke and Cardinal Brandmüller to Conferences of Bishops

My emphases and comments:

Open Letter to the Presidents of the Conferences of Bishops

Dear Brothers, Presidents of the Conferences of Bishops,

We turn to you with deep distress!

The Catholic world is adrift, and, with anguish, the question is asked: Where is the Church going?

Before the drift in process, it seems that the difficulty is reduced to that of the abuse of minors, a horrible crime, especially when it is perpetrated by a priest, which is, however, only part of a much greater crisis. The plague of the homosexual agenda has been spread within the Church, promoted by organized networks and protected by a climate of complicity and a conspiracy of silence. [What I call #sodoclericalism] The roots of this phenomenon are clearly found in that atmosphere of materialism, of relativism and of hedonism, in which the existence of an absolute moral law, that is without exceptions, is openly called into question.

Sexual abuse is blamed on clericalism. But the first and primary fault of the clergy does not rest in the abuse of power but in having gone away from the truth of the Gospel. The even public denial, by words and by acts, of the divine and natural law, is at the root of the evil that corrupts certain circles in the Church.

In the face of this situation, Cardinals and Bishops are silent. Will you also be silent on the occasion of the meeting called in the Vatican for this coming February 21st?

We are among those who in 2016 presented to the Holy Father certain questions, dubia, which were dividing the Church in the wake of the conclusions of the Synod on the Family. Today, those dubia have not only not had any response but are part of a more general crisis of the Faith. Therefore, we encourage you to raise your voice to safeguard and proclaim the integrity of the doctrine of the Church.

We pray to the Holy Spirit, that He may assist the Church and bring light to the Pastors who guide her. A decisive act now is urgent and necessary. We trust in the Lord Who has promised: “Behold I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world” (Mt 28,20).

  1. Amerikaner says:

I thank the good Lord that these two do not hide their light under bushel baskets.

  2. RichR says:

There comes a point where you just have to choose sides. You can’t worry about public perception anymore. This is about how you prepare your soul and the souls of those you shepherd for final judgement.

  3. Spinmamma says:

May God keep Cardinals Burke and Brandmüller, and all of His faithful and courageous clergy All of the clergy are in my prayers, but especially the good and valiant, who have chosen to speak up for Holy Mother Church come what may. I can’t express my gratitude and admiration–they give me hope and resolve.

  4. Man-o-words says:

Shame on these two for destroying the unity of the church! I mean, according to their peers, it is far better that we all go into perdition together than to call out the evil among us! The nerve of these two Cardinals to put the good of Truth over the good of Unity!

(Yes, this was written tongue in cheek, and I couldn’t be more delighted to read the words of these two Cardinals. BTW, if you haven’t seen it yet, Cardinal Burke has a website now – not much on it yet, but very excited to see where it goes. )

  5. OrdinaryCatholic says:

” You can’t worry about public perception anymore. ”

You are absolutely right. Besides, as a Catholic, we should be used to being publicly shunned, humiliated, mocked etc. It’s part and parcel of being a follower of Christ. So my comment would be, do what is right and forget the public perception. They’ve never been on our side anyway and don’t expect it to happen soon. If we are mocked and persecuted let it be for speaking the Truth.

  6. JesusFreak84 says:

I don’t know what the good Cardinals expect, (probably not much,) but like Viganó, I suspect the greater concern was about discharging their consciences before God. Cardinals like Cupich aren’t worth going to Hell for.

  7. Felipe says:

“A decisive act now is urgent and necessary.”

Yes. Very true. I hope our Bishops are encouraged by these words and have a clear discussion that results with actions. I pray that our Holy Father responds to the dubia and make his teaching clear and direct regarding these sinful circumstances people are in. The Church is suffering because of the public sins of some of its leadership, doing nothing would be worse than the sins themselves. We are the Church of martyrs who would not renounce their faith and would give their mortal LIFE for Truth. What do these Bishops have to lose in order to stand up for Christ and his Church in this moment in time? I pray for these Bishops, to not be cowards but to be men of God and accountable before our Lord Jesus Christ. Veni Creátor Spíritus…

  8. JonPatrick says:

St. Peter Damian, pray for us!
