I was there and didnt see it… when was this taken? After he met with the bishops at the end or??? What a bummer would have loved to see him wearing that. Was cool though, I was about 10 feet from his Holiness as he drove by.

This really raises my homes that we will see a return of the Papal Tiara. Maybe it will return for a High Pontifical Mass!

    Hope and Pray!

Matt of South Kent – dream on! Nice thought, though.

I somehow think that is the 9,466,735 th thing on the Pope’s list of things to do and save the church from the modern crisis.

If you think of all the progress we have made in the last 8 years, hey the last 8 months, I will keep right on hoping and praying.

  6. I am thrilled to see the Pope using the papal saturno. It is an eminently sensible hat in the heat of the Italian sun. And so many clerical accoutrements seemed to have been jettisoned in the philistine years of Paul VI. But the saturno, at least, was never abrogated ! In fact, can anyone think of any pope in modern times (apart from the short lived John Paul I,) who never wore it ? I can’t. Pius XI, Pius XII, John XIII, Paul VI, John Paul II, have all worn it, as far as I know.

  7. Matthew Mattingly says:

This is a better version of the Papal saturno than the one Benedict XVI wore a veay or so ago. I didn’t know that there are two styles, the round, flat saturno like he’s wearing today…..and the other kind where the edges are pushed up (almost curled). Pius X and Pius XI favored that kind. And that’s what Benedict XVI wore last year or so.
But I prefer this flatter version of the Papal saturno. It’s what Pius XII always wore….and when it came to style, class, and Papal vesture, He can’t be beat.
Pius XII really knew how to “Pope”.

  8. It seems to me that this is another signal of conservatism in the Vatican.

    It’s all good!

“I wish he had used it during President Bush’s visit.”

Maybe if he’s invited to go horseback riding at Crawford?

  10. Clayton says:

Indeed, my lord, it is a most absolute and excellent hat.

  11. John Orzechowski says:

It’s the Urbi et Orbi sombrero!

    sorry, I couldn’t resist…

  12. Bill Haley says:

Murphy does play a heavy roles in the laws of shipping. You know it arrived ten minutes after Bush’s departure.

  13. TNCath says:

I was there too. He put it on after the actual audience. It was a wonderful experience.

  14. Jill of the Amazing Wolverine Tribe says:

Mpm, exactly. Every American kid had a hat just like it when playing “cowboy” or “cowgirl.”
It’s traditional. But it still makes me laugh

Hopefully the camauro will come back with full choir dress.

  17. David O'Rourke says:

Matt of South Kent: I suspect that the tiara is a long way off too but keep on hoping. Who thought we would come as far as we have?
