Jerusalem Rabbinate backing off threat to sever ties to Holy See

Yesterday I posted a piece about how the rabbinate of Jerusalem was going to cut ties with the Holy See (which would not … immediately at least… affect diplomatic ties with the state of Israel)

This is in from ANSA.

Saner minds have prevailed it seems. Deo gratias.

  2. Baron Korf says:

Some how I doubt an “Oops, sorry, didn’t mean to cause an international incident over an internal church matter” is forth coming.

Oh well, at least they aren’t persisting in this animosity.

…thinking none of this was surprising…

    Deo gratias!

I can very well understand the attitude of Jews. We MEFers have been treated as lepers. So have Jews, and for a long time. So have other minorities. So we MEFers should be the FIRST and the most emphatic in denouncing in general Antisemitism, defamation of Jews, the attribution to Jews of evil motives, and Holocaust Denial; and in particular denouncing Williamson.

No lesser mortal than Bishop Felley himself has denounced Williamson’s remarks, said they are not the view of the SSPX, has told Williamson to remain silent from here on out, and apparently has secluded him in a SSPX seminary far away out on the edge of the earth. So to defend Williamson and Holocaust Denial would be to oppose de facto Bishop Felley himself, and such defenders thus would oppose the Society itself.

Moreover, Holy Father’s remarks yesterday at his Audience made clear that Holocaust Denial may not be on the lips of Catholics. “Rome has spoken”, and I suggest we drop the topic before Antisemitism and Holocaust Denial become identified with the supporters of the MEF, and thus would bring the MEF’s progress to a screeching end, putting us back where we were in the Spring of 2007.

  5. Kevin says:

Oh, NO! Whatever shall we do without their support? It would be like low-fat vegetarians boycotting McDonald’s! Or bald men boycotting barbershops! THE WORLD’S GONNA END!

How utterly and completely ridiculous! Hey, rabbis: don’t let the door hit you on the way out!

  6. Rachel says:

Thanks be to God! I was praying a great deal last night about the upsetting news of severed ties; I’m so glad things are looking up!

“Lewy said it would be ‘mistaken’ to give the anti-modernist Williamson the power to affect relations between Israel and the Holy See.”

    That’s right!

  7. Sid says:

If the MEF were ever suppressed, and suppressed because it harbored Antisemitism, I fear then that Kevin’s remarks would be used as the evidence for the suppression. His words can only hurt the cause of the MEF.

The “liberal” (Cultural Marxist) press, enemies of The Church, are baiting MEFers to make Antisemitic remarks. The fascists also would be provoked to some out of the woodwork. Don’t take the bait.

  8. Maureen says:

We don’t _need_ the support of anyone but Jesus Christ. But considering that they are not only part of the human family — whom we’re supposed to keep peace with — but also are our elder brothers in faith _and_ that it’s kinda hard to convert people who hate us because they think we all want to kill them and spit on their graves, maybe we should want to have amicable relations with Jewish folks in general. Ya think?

At the very least, you should want to fight with people over the points on which we diagree, not the points we agree on. (Like, “Concentration camps and gas chambers were bad” and “Those scumsucking Nazis killed and martyred a whole lot of innocent people”. I mean, those are points which bring pretty much everyone together in agreement!)

  9. Roland de Chanson says:

Gratias Deo agamus, quia Sanctum Patrem calumniati lucem demum viderunt velamenque dumtaxat ad tempus de eorum cordibus ablatum est, tametsi lux Domini veritatis occaecationem eorum nondum perfodit. Flectamus genua.

[Let us give thanks to God, that those who have falsely blamed the Holy Father have in the end seen the light, and that if only for the time being the veil has been lifted from their hearts, even though the light of truth of the Lord has not yet pierced their blindness. Let us kneel.

  10. craig says:

What does MEF stand for here??

  11. paul says:

Sid- I agree with you 100%. Let’s move forward. The Holy Father needs all of our prayers he did an extra-ordinarily brave act by reaching out to the sspx and lifting the excommunications and no doubt the devil wants to sabotage him anyway he can.

  12. Sid says:

    MEF=Mass in the Extraordinary Form

  13. Rob F. says:

David Klinghoffer is no friend to the MEF or to the SSPX, but at least he is an honorable critic. He gives a very fair minded and intellegent overview of this flap from a Jewish perspective here: http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1233050208055&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull
