And because on this blog people love to express moral absolutes, you can even answer AFTER the game is over according to which team ought to have won, simply because you like them or… well.. you lost money, etc.

Being a girl and not giving a rip about football, I vote neither, and am watching the Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet this afternoon/evening. [Definitely NOT options.]

The Rooneys are a VERY Catholic family owning the Steelers. They even have training camp in the campus of St. Vincent Archabbey in Latrobe, Penna.
The Cardinals? Well, they moved from St. Louis, so supporting them would be like supporting the Babylonian Captivity in Avignon. :)
As a Catholic, I feel obliged to vote for the Cardinals (church hierarchy) and against the Steelers (think of the Commandments)…
But I’m only going to watch the commercials.
The “very Catholic” Rooney family campaigned for Barack Hussein Obama II so the latter is openly rooting for the Steelers. Therefore, I will be supporting the red birds. Go Cardinals!

The last time Kurt Warner won a Super Bowl, and they shoved the microphone in his face, he shouted at the top of his lungs “Thank youuuuuuu, Jessssssssssssuuuuuuuuuuuus!” If he takes it again today, I HOPE TO GOD he yells at the top of his lungs a prolife message “Aborrrrrtionnnnnnnn kiiiillllllsssss babieeeeessssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

I am rooting for the Cardinals. I grew up in Southern Illinois and the Cardinals (baseball and football) were the local team. Kurt Warner led the St. Louis Rams to the Super Bowl and he has a wing named after him at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis.* Every time Kurt Warner comes to St. Louis he always is received warmly, the Rams should have never cut him.
*Named after John Cardinal Glennon, the Archbishop of St. Louis from 1903 to 1946, SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center first opened its doors in July 1956. It was the Archbishop’s mission to see a health care facility open to all children in need of medical care.

Here in Greensburg, PA just 20 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, the priest at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral pulled a Terrible Towel out from under his vestments to make a point during the homily, which I cannot recall because my brain shut down when I saw the towel. The 7pm Sunday evening Mass for today was cancelled, on the grounds that everyone would be watching the Super Bowl.

Southern Pennsylvania fan who likes the Baltimore Ravens, so I am inclined to cheer for the Cardinals. I can’t cheer for an archrival.
One priest in our southwestern PA diocese this morning used a Terrible Towel at the washing of the hands. (I’m not making this up.)
Despite his indiscretion, I’m still cheering for the Steelers.

Cardinals would be the obvious pick, but at this time in history I think we need Steelers to steel the spines and determination of our Bishops. Most of our Cardinals (in AMchurch, anyway) are beyond hope.
I think I have to agree with Father Z. about baseball and hockey being superior sports, ones with which I am well acquainted, and which I enjoy completely. Go Phillies! Er, sorry for the outburst, but since we are the only MLB team (or any professional team of any sport to lose more than 10,000 games), the recent World Series victory of the Phillies is something I have some time to enjoy. Unfortunately, it may be my last! LOL!
That being said, I have to go with the Steelers because they’re from Pennsylvania.
Because the Steelers defeated my longtime team in Super Bowl XL, I cannot root for them today, though I expect they will win.
Now, that accomplished, I will add something I would have posted in the earlier piece on prospective Archbishops of Westminster. My candidate is Fr. George Rutler. Only the best for the long-suffering English, I say.

The Steelers owner praised Obama in his acceptance speech for the Lombardi trophy. If I was a Cardinal fan before that gave me even more reason, along with some pretty dirty hits by the Steeler defense, to be a Cardinal fan in spite of the game’s outcome. Pretty good game though! Wanted to see the Cardinal QB (who may have played his last NFL game) do well. He’s not Catholic but he is a devote Christian who lets his actions speak volumes in support of his faith.
Troy is Greek Orthodox not Catholic, contrary to popular belief; however, he does come to Mass while at Saint Vincent College during Training Camp.
Rooney mentioning Obama was STUPID. I can’t think of a better word than that…plain stupid, and embarassing.
Cardinals Warner seems to be a good Christian man. He played a terrific game, persevered, but unfortunately for him his team didn’t back him up when he needed them.

Brian and Susan – I’ve been hearing such stories from Masses yesterday and today. Those priests are off-their-rockers. I do believe the abadoning of the TLM has helped lead to such secularization of even our own Liturgy.
Please do us all a favor and let the priest at said Masses know they are defiling the Liturgy.
Today at Holy Wisdom in Pgh, PA Father said before his homily, that while he knew people had pre-game parties to get to, he knew everyone would nevertheless stay after Mass for Benediction of the Bl. Sacrament. And, everyone stayed. :)
I\’m with Dr. Eric. I grew up (and relocated back to) STL Metro area in IL. I was rooting for Kurt b/c this city misses him terribly. The Rams haven\’t been the same since he was booted out. (Thank his big mouth wife, among other reasons. Mom insists it was Kurt\’s open Christianity!) This is the first year I missed and rooted for the Football Cardinals. (I grew up liking the Cowboys. Cardinals\’ ownership stinks.)
Alas, my huz is from The Burgh! I wanted him to enjoy the win, but I secretly wanted Kurt to erase the demons from his loss to N.E. Kurt had a great game, but his teammates\’ penalties were numerous. Huz was pretty happy and called his family back in The Burgh to rejoice.
Rooney was all out for Obie-One, and I was very disappointed in his thanks to Obie-One first and foremost. What does Obie have to do with that? I also couldn\’t believe that Obie interjected himself by being interviewed by Matt Lauer before the game. I did not watch, I was flipping around and heard a promo by Bob Costas (another StLouisan. A Cardinal Glennon–mentioned by Dr E–wing\’s named after him. I think it was the Bob Costas\’ hosted fundraiser that Sheryl Crow was at, causing Abp. Burke to resign from foundation board).

leah and Rancher – I agree that Dan Rooney’s comments were inappropriate, but FWIW, he is conducting a campaign to be named ambassador to the Irish Republic. Doesn’t make his comments right, but it does explain them somewhat.
I didn’t watch the SB but instead attended a High Mass (TLM) in celebration of Fr. R. Cipolla’s 25 years as a Catholic Priest. This incredibly beautiful and significant Mass was celebrated at St. Mary Parish in Norwalk, CT, where Fr. Greg Markey and Fr. Cipolla have been tirelessly educating parishioners and promoting the Latin Mass (as readers of wdtprs know!). After Mass, Fr. Cipolla distributed prayer cards that read, in part, “in thanksgiving for the courage and foresight of Pope Benedict XVI in restoring the Traditional Mass to the Church, a source of Truth, Goodness, and Beauty.” So for me and hundreds of others who attended this Mass, Fr. Cipolla scored the winning touchdown.
I watched parts of the game-took my shower during halftime (don’t care for Springsteen)-then turned it over to PBS to watch ‘Masterpiece Classic’ ‘s adaptation of “Sense and Sensibility”.
Don’t have cable or satellite-would have loved to watch the ‘Puppy Bowl’!
Turned it back just in time to see the post-game show.

Cardinals, for me. They are the oldest Football club in America, showing their roots in tradition, and they were not endorsed by President Obama. In addition, who can’t like an underdog?
I think Pittsburgh played rough and so I rooted Cardinals. Both teams had some good and bad plays though. Enjoyable to watch!
