More than one person, including a priest, wrote to me about my comment that today the Holy Father wore a taglio filipino cut of Roman vestment today.
My interlocutors beg to differ.
Here is a screencapture from today:
And from 2008:
One of my interlocutors suggested that the vestment used today was the 2008 cut-down to modern Roman size.
Hard to tell.
But if he was wearing a modern Roman vestment, and not an historic cut, that would also be interesting.
Whatever it is, I’m glad it’s not the 2008 anymore; that one looked terribly cumbersome.
I don’t think it’s the 2008 one cut-down, though. If you look at the last live image that you have today in your other post – http://www.wdtprs.com/images/ROMA/10_02_17_aventine18.jpg – you can see that the pattern of the brocade in the central part is different. Even without the papal crest (which could have been a late addition), the surrounding design looks different than what was on the 2008.
This Tridentinum company seems to be producing new items regularly for the Holy Father.
No, I think it is definitely a different chasuble than the 2008 one. This year’s chasuble is definitely a Roman (fiddleback) chasuble.
Whatever it is, historic or new, it’s beautiful. Thanks Pope Benedict and Guido Marini. Tom
I like the 2008 one–I’d wear that; but then, I’m more…ample than the holy father!
I love it…. whatever it is.
Are Roman style vestments a daring choice for a Roman Pontiff? I love it!
Stephen, I guess a Roman pontiff should be wearing “French” style vestments in Rome. Tom
Very impressive and appropriate.
I don’t think the 2008 was cut down either. The pattern of the brocade looks different in detail, and also if you look at the fabric it drapes differently – the 2008 has a much softer fall while this year’s is a heavier, stiffer fabric.
