A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, in a spirit of filial devotion, devoutly recite any duly approved prayer for the Supreme Pontiff (e.g., the Oremus pro Pontifice):
V. Let us pray for our Pontiff, Pope Benedict.
R. May the Lord preserve him, and give him life, and bless him upon earth, and deliver him not to the will of his enemies.
Our Father. Hail Mary.
Let us pray.
O God, Shepherd and Ruler of all Thy faithful people, look mercifully upon Thy servant Benedict, whom Thou hast chosen as shepherd to preside over Thy Church. Grant him, we beseech Thee, that by his word and example, he may edify those over whom he hath charge, so that together with the flock committed to him, may he attain everlasting life. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

As I remember growing up I was told it was a sin not to pray for the Holy Father. Right now it is imperative. He is an older man and I would think the stress he is under from the world, the lack of assistance and support from some of the Roman Curia and so many of his collegiate brothers must give him both a sense of loss and despair at their behavior. Being the kind of man he has shown himself to be this would be devastating.
Thanks for the links. My family and I just began praying nightly for the Pope before we eat. That way, it is habitual and we remember to do it every day. We have a couple prayer cards similar to what you wrote above, and we include Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be.
I’m very happy my children are doing this each night with us because, when they grow older, they will have been praying for the Pope for a long time and will love him because of that.
Father – you took a picture of my bag of magnets (and my glass of beer) at the D.C. blog-nic. :-) I wish I had brought more with me that day because each person to whom I offered one REALLY appreciated it – especially the priests.
I have found them superb evangelization aids and always have a half dozen or so in my purse – along with holy cards and medals to give out. Several Catholics on The Joint Staff keep one stuck on their file cabinet (sorry – not allowed to take pictures!); my pre-Confirmation students all have one on the family fridge, and 3 decided to stand up for our beloved Pope and also stick one in their locker at their public middle school. (this made me very proud – it was *their* idea) I give them to squirmy kids at church – priests & laity – I unwittingly amused a friend of yours in offering one at a cocktail (forget his name, but he was working on the new English translation – priest with a British accent.)
I definitely recommend the magnets – they’re unusual & don’t damage fine clothing like the pins. I have about 50-70 left of the 200 I had ordered and will probably replenish before my travels this summer. ?
A little OT, but CafePress is having a sale this weekend (through Monday), so a good time to stock up on buttons and magnets.
I typed in “Pope” at Cafepress and some very offensive anti-Pope items came up.It is too bad we have to order from them, does anyone know of another option??
