SHOCK! A Cardinal is pro-life!

I got to know Marc Card. Ouellet in Rome.  He is a stand up guy.

So, I tuned in when I saw this from CWN:

Cardinal Marc Ouellet expressed astonishment at the reaction to his recent statement that abortion is a moral crime that cannot be justified even in the case of rape. In response, a newspaper columnist said he hoped the cardinal would die a slow and painful death, […you mean… like a baby as it is being snuffed out?] while the National Assembly of Quebec unanimously expressed its support for free access to abortion.

“When it comes to a religious figure or the imposition of a religious doctrine in Quebec, people are going to speak out,” said Ainsley Jenicek of the Quebec Federation of Birth Planning.

“For the unborn, there is not justice. He is the weakest human being; nobody is protecting him,” the cardinal said as he reflected upon the reaction to his remarks. “I am aware that in Canada, in Quebec in particular, you will not reform society at the moral level by teaching morals first. It will be through a new evangelization.”

“If you do not meet Jesus Christ, it is very difficult to accept the teaching, the moral teaching of the Church,” he added. “I am aware of that, even if what we teach is coherent at the rational level.”

And, would you believe that about 80% of Quebecs “national government” (they like to believe they’re their own country), are “Catholic”? Yet, they spit in the face of the church!

  2. And just last week, my former boss when he as just a baby Minister in Ottawa, Jean Charest, (I was his Special Assistant) the now Premier of Quebec and a CATHOLIC defended abortion as a right in Quebec.

Jean, you did not impress me in 1988 and you impress me less so now!

What a waste of a political life…so much promise…so few results.

I’m sure calling abortion a crime will soon be considered a “hate crime” in Canada.

His Eminence gave similar remarks at the Canadian Conference of Catholic Physicians a few weeks ago in Montreal and they were very encouraging particularly for those of us from more… “pastoral” regions of the country.

  5. Here is the Premier’s quote as he told the Globe & Mail:

“Abortion is an inalienable right and the consensus expressed in the National Assembly reflects the consensus on this issue in Quebec society…Today’s motion sends a clear message to the federal government on the need to protect an essential right for all women…(the) battle is over and here there is no turning back.”

sadly, it is rare to hear a Church leader speak up clearly and distinctly on the subject.
May God bless him for his words.

The Cardinal is a very great man, and a personal hero as he keeps the Catholic faith and promotes the Gospel of Life unstintingly and with full force of his abilities. I can think of a few Cardinals who would do well to study Quebec’s Prince of the Church. For the Cardinal and all of his faithful brother Princes, may Jesus Christ be praised. And for those who are weak on the Gospel of Life, may God visit them all with a quickening and strengthening of the inner being and sending His Holy Ghost upon them, may they all become great defenders of Life and proclaimers of the Gospel of Life. Laus Deo.

  8. There is a reason Cardinals wear red. Would that all show the Gospel like this.

That’s right, Ainsley. Because many people in the West only understand freedom as saying to Authority, “You’re not the boss of me!” Because many people mistakenly believe that you only exercise free will when you oppose regulation or authoritative teaching, and not when you actively submit to it. Because people are free to decide that the brick wall they’re driving towards at 95 mph doesn’t really exist and that there won’t be a fatal collision. Because people don’t want to accept a truth that inconveniences them.

“[The] battle is over and here there is no turning back.”

Yeah? The Saxons thought so at Hastings. Like Yogi Berra said, “It ain’t over ’til it’s over.”

Ad multos annos to Cdl. Ouellet.

Smart man. Coherence counts for little nowdays. It’s often shocking.

Also, conversion is an interesting thing. No amount of rational argument convinces as long as the person is on the other side of the mindset and their mental doors are closed. Once the door to the other side opens, and the choice of sides exists, then both sides can be seen more clearly for what they are. For some people, then and only then, does real thinking about coherence and sense take place, no matter what they end up choosing.
