Priestly culinary accomplishments: Un panino di burro arachidi…

It has been said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.  I found this over at Young Fogeys, where Fr. Jay Toborowsky reigns supreme.

My emphases and comments.

In the life of a parish Priest (especially when you live alone), having the time to cook a meal is an almost unheard of treat. But, the other day, after reading another of Fr. Zuhlsdorf’s culinary triumphs, I couldn’t resist this:
On Sundays people should, if possible, get together for a nice meal. But after three Sunday Masses and a Corpus Christi procession, my desire for a meal is outweighed by my desire for things like a couch, The West Wing on DVD, [Good choice.] and some air conditioning.
But still, I needed to eat, so I decided to whip up one of my favorite recipes: Un panino di burro arachidi con patate fritte e ciambelline di ciocolata which is a "Peanut butter sandwich [I love those…] with potato chips and chocolate donuts".
First, I undid the twist tie on some Pane Italiano.

[Note the twist tie!] … unscrew the lid on your peanut butter …

HAHAHAHAHA ! I saw this earlier today on New Advent’s website and laughed so hard! : )

“… unscrew the lid on your peanut butter …”

What would the Latin be for “Righty, tighty – Lefty, loosey”?

Too funny! I love it. But he didn’t explain how to spread the peanut butter..left to right..swirly? What kind of bread? What no jelly? No butter added on? Chips..baked or fried? Too many questions left un-answered. I’ll never be able to duplicate this recipe.

(This is a favorite meal of mine, sans the chocolate donuts. However, Jif is highly superior to Skippy!)

Jif is the best. I’m planning to bake my way through Rose’s Heavenly Cakes by Rose Levy Beranbaum (it may take years), and the first one I made was a spice cake with peanut butter buttercream. She recommended Jif for the peanut butter. It was delicious.

Dear Reverend Fathers (all of you). I am trying to lose weight and the constant references to food are making me wonder whether a visit to this Blog is actually a proximate occasion of sin (LOL !)

  6. I’m sorry, but as a ‘diabetic in the making’, that is just gross!(Genetics here in the works; family history; mom, two sisters with Type II Diabetes…I’m on the cusp…darn!)
I’ll stick to carrot sticks, celery, the Mediterranean diet, chicken without the skin (sometimes!), etc., etc., etc.,…
Enjoy the “naughties” while you’re young…it’ll eventually catch up with you! Believe me, I know:<)!

    NP,

Do not despair! (I’m with you – back on Weight Watchers). Try fish – a nice trout filet baked with a little honey or maple syrup (you can use the sugar free kind) and low fat chicken broth reduction with ginger and garlic — then put a chopped Bosc pear, a little jalapeno, onions, etc. on it for a relish. Serve with brown rice and a nice big green salad with no-cal/fat-free dressing.

I think that’s about 6 WW points, even with real maple syrup or honey.

I use Nutella instead of peanut butter — you might as well be hanged for a sheep as a lamb, I say.

  8. lucapi says:

Well, actually that recipe has nothing in common with Italian “cuisine”… Sorry, American friends…

  9. AnAmericanMother says:

    lucapi,

    As Foghorn Leghorn always said,

    “I say, I say, it’s a joke, son!”

  10. Patikins says:

I was eating a PB&J when I first read this! It was made with my mom’s homemade/home grown concord grape jelly and locally (Columbus, Ohio) made Krema peanut butter. Best natural peanut butter available IMO. Just peanuts, nothing else added, not even salt.

  11. AnAmericanMother: Thank you…that sounds delicioso!!:<)!

No worries — we sufferers have to stick together!

Weight Watchers puts out several cookbooks that are very good – they have a sensible balance of calories, fiber, and fat that works extremely well. I lost 40 pounds on the program, then slacked off and gained a good deal back, so . . . back I go! Also, I don’t know if you have Publix supermarkets in your neck of the woods, but they have recipe cards by the fish counter that are very low-fat and low-cal. The trout with pear relish is one of their recipes.

He’s drinking out of a Toronto Maple Leaf cup – he’ll choke for sure!

  14. AAM: One of our community members is a Weight Watcher’s member…we try to help out one another (I don’t have the weight issue, per se, but the balanced diet thing to help the blood sugar/cholesterol).
Thanks, AnAmericanMother…you’re being a good Mom!!

  15. AnAmericanMother says:

That’s not what my kids say (nag – nag – nag) ;-p

Seriously, the WW diet works well for cholesterol & prediabetic even if you don’t need to lose weight. It’s not a “diet” per se but a change in eating habits that is all for the good even if you don’t need to shed pounds.

My problem is my Southern heritage — left to my own devices I fall back on my habitual good old country cooking that was great when we all were plowing with mules and riding or walking everywhere we went . . . but not so good with an office job sitting in front of a computer!

  16. doanli says:

    I hear ya, AnAmericanMother!

Father, grits go great with fish too! (And heart healthy unless you put a lot of real butter on them.)

  17. Hans says:

He’s drinking out of a Toronto Maple Leaf cup – he’ll choke for sure!

Yes, rumor has it that Blackhawk cups are all the rage to avoid choking.

  18. irishgirl says:

    This is funny!

I hope those potato chips and chocolate donuts are ‘on the side’-it will get pretty messy if they’re in with the peanut butter!

‘Yes rumor has it that Blackhawk cups are all the rage to avoid choking’-haha Hans! Love it!

I heard about last night’s game and how it ended…well, I’m glad that one of the ‘Original Six’ teams won Lord Stanley’s chalice…and after a long drought, too! I wanted ‘Les Canadiens’ of Montreal to win myself…maybe next year…sigh….

  19. lucapi says:

Sorry, American Mother, I was referring to the priest’s recipe, not to the your one!

  20. robtbrown says:

I’m a Jif man myself. Has anyone ever eaten Carriage House (once Red Wing) Peanut Butter? It was Bill Buckley’s favorite.
