What is your good news?

Let’s hear your good news… pick us up a bit.

For my part, though I am not at 100% I no longer feel as if I were about to die, which significantly brightens the day.

As of July 1, we will get a new parochial vicar in a nearby parish who knows how to celebrate the EF Mass. Hopefully the pastor will let him do it!

  2. RosaMystica says:

I’ve decided to homeschool my kids, in order to give them a better academic and religious education. It’s good news, but I still need prayer!

  3. Charivari Rob says:

I heard at the end of last week that the Holy Father is lining up a nice, smooth transition for my old home diocese (Trenton) by appointing a coadjutor.

Bishop Smith, who has done much wonderful work in his 13+ years in Trenton, turns 75 before the end of the month. The announcement was that the outgoing president of CUA, Father O’Connell, will be ordained/installed at the end of July.

From the news reports and more personal commentary I’ve been hearing, it sounds like Trenton is getting a winner.

I don’t have any ‘good news’ to relate, but….I’m glad you’re feeling better, Father Z!

The Celtics won game 2. Is there any better news?

Good news in Canada! One national Canadian newspaper is pushing back against recent anti-Catholic attacks on Cardinal Ouellet in Quebec and on Opus Dei, because the Canadian vicar recently had a luncheon with Members of Parliament, Senators and staffers. Recently, the leader of the separatist Bloc Quebecois, the third largest political party in the House of Commons, “outed” some members of Opus Dei as Conservative Party members in what the newspaper describes as McCarthyite fashion. A member of the socialist New Democratic Party called Opus Dei “creepy” and said he would not want to associate with them. A host of a new politics program on the public Canadian broadcaster had the Vicar of Opus Dei on with this MP where he had to say the “creepy” remark to the vicar’s face and admit that if he said it against any other religion it would be terrible. Said MP said he was a former altar boy and a Catholic inspired by the social gospel but that kind of religion in politics is okay. Just don’t push a Catholic pro-life agenda or you are the scary Christian right.

What’s beautiful about this is that leading the charge defending Catholics in the public square are a number of prominent Jewish columnists.

I had the great good fortune to travel to Charlotte over the weekend to attend the ordination and first Mass of Thanksgiving of a terrific young priest who served in our suburban Columbus Ohio parish during his year as a deacon, while completing his studies at the Josephinum. It was the first opportunity I ever had to attend both of these important events, and I found it a powerful spiritual and emotional experience. We need to pray intensely for vocations!

    I finished my finals !!!

  10. DavidJ says:

I hit Confession at the Eucharistic Congress here in Atlanta. I hit the young adult track on Friday night with my wife and youngest child, heard Fr. Leo Patalinghug give a great talk, had Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and had an all around good time. It was a source of great spiritual uplifting when I desperately needed it.

Had enjoyed 3 consecutive days of Benediction (1st Friday, 1st Saturday, and Corpus Christi) at our ICKSP apostolate parish, St. Margaret Mary’s (Oakland, CA). Coincidentally, our 4-month-old baby finally started sleeping throughout the night (about 8 hours) on the same 1st Friday night. It’s also been a blessing on how he’s been pretty quiet in Church — I have no idea how he can sleep throughout the mass (considering that it’s in the EF, which is longer than the typical novus ordo mass!).

  12. Liz F says:

RosaMystica, that is good news. I will pray for you! It is not easy. I complain more than I should, but the blessings outweigh the hardships SO much. I never dreamed I would ever homeschool. I didn’t used to think much of homeschooling. Now I’m so grateful for it. Prayer is definitely the answer.

I guess that’s my good news too. I get to homeschool my children.:o)

  13. puma19 says:

well the good news is that Benedict XVI had a successful visit and Cyprus and is looking very well after a few os trips this year. If at 83 he can still fly around, give loads of forensic sermons and speeches, then we all have much to learn and take heart from.

But I want to ask a question. The new bishop-elect in USA, Dr O’Connell (Trenton) was pictured the day of his announcement as bishop, already dressed in bishop regalia, with a pectoral cross and zuchetto.
Am i missing someting, but to have this dress already when no consecration has yet been made, seems a little premature. Why the rush to wear the purple? In my experience of knowing many bishops-elect, I know of not one who actually appeared in public prior to consecration Mass with the full regalia.
The consecration confers the powers on the bishop-elect, and is this not the case for all such chosen priests.
A pope becomes pope upon accepting the cardinals’ vote and not before. Cardinals are created…when, on appointment or on the day they receive the red hat from the incumbent pope. A cardinal ‘in secreto’ is a cardinal but most seem never to know till after death of pope or cardinal.
But would appreciate re the bishop’s attire. my feeling is that the rush to dress up is a little rash and maybe presumptous – better await the day of consecration and the formalising of the sacrament. The priest is not a bishop till that moment – correct????

  14. Charivari Rob says:

    Good question, puma19. I really don’t know.

I assumed that the photo in fuller regalia was some file photo from CU or some other place/event. Perhaps the cross is appropriate to his order?

…or perhaps his office. I did see a comment/question somewhere online as to why Father O’Connell was addressed as the “Very Reverend…”. Somebody replied that it was appropriate to his office as a University President.

  15. mormormax says:

My husband and I are on vacation at the beach. We went yesterday to Mass at the local Catholic Church which in the past has always depressed me. I’d have to go down a hall past the bathrooms to the find the Blessed Sacrament Chapel in order to spend time with the Lord before church. This Sunday, though we were missing the Corpus Christi procession at our church, I was elated to find that the tabernacle was now front and center in the church.

We also have been blessed with the arrival of our eleventh grandchild (our daughter’s 7th child) Matthias Gerard. Praise be to God.

  16. Sacristymaiden says:

I’m graduating from high school in 2 weeks!

  17. Supertradmum says:

My son, Edmund, will be entering his “pre-seminary” year in the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton. I am so excited. Please pray for him as he follows his vocation to the priesthood.

I was cleared of cancer three weeks ago. Praise God.

  18. DT says:

Received news from my graduate advisor that I passed my language proficiency exam (Latin)! :)

  19. homeschoolofthree says:

I had a GREAT weekend, because of my GREAT Priest! On Friday evening we had a surprise five year anniversary party for Fr. Then on Sunday a beautiful Ad Orientum Mass, later in the day we had an awesome Corpus Christi procession out in the country. Now, my wonderful, energetic Priest is camping with my husband, son and the rest of the our Boy Scout troop!

  20. Jayna says:

I met our seminarian intern today. He thinks I’m funny, which is priority number one. But at Mass today, I saw that he receives communion on the tongue. That and I’m pretty sure he’s my age, if not younger by a couple of years (I’m 25). I do hope he ends up serving at the Life Teen Mass, little though I would like to inflict that experience on anyone. Perhaps he may influence the younger crowd, being closer to their age and all.

  21. Jayna says:

Sorry for the double post, but I just saw this question.

puma19: We recently consecrated an auxiliary bishop here in Atlanta and there were already prayer cards out of him in his bishops attire prior to the day. I think it was more for publicity rather than him jumping the gun on wearing his regalia. Perhaps this was for the same reason?

  22. robkphd says:

There is a story about a baptism after a shark attack that moved me. Definitely good news and worth a quick read at: http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,869081,00.html

  23. Gwen says:

I received while kneeling at our OF Mass!

I took our rector out to breakfast (after he’d blessed my airplane) and asked him if I could receive while kneeling. He said, “that’s great that you want to do that. I worry that someone might trip over you, since nobody in the line is expecting it, so I’d prefer you go to the end of the line. I think you’ll find it a humbling and reverent experience.”

“Humbling and reverent” is an understatement. It’s been overwhelming. And I’ve had several people come up to me and talk about wanting to do the same.

    God bless our holy priests!

  24. marthawrites says:

Re: Fr. O’Connell. We recently heard his commencement speech at CUA where our son-in-law received his doctorate in politics. One of the best graduation speeches I’ver ever heard–not cliche ridden, but encouraging and really from the heart.
Now for my good news: I always think that one of God’s great gifts is the gift of anticipation. We leave central PA this week for a vacation in AZ; my husband loves to hike the Grand Canyon; whereas, I have read many a good book overlooking the rim. God’s glory abounds in that wonderful site, so we never tire of returning. Immediately following our return home a surprise bridal shower for our youngest will be held at our house (she thinks she’s joining her siblings to celebrate Father’s Day and our 45th anniversary), followed soon after by the birth of another daughter’s first baby, our tenth grandchild. The ninth, named after me, was born less than a month ago. The blessings just keep coming, and are we ever thankful!

  25. shedrulejoachim says:

St. John’s RC High School in Dundee hosted this year’s education Mass at St. Andrew’s Cathedral. Mass was concelebrated by our local Bishop and diocesan clergy. Mass was quite beautiful and the school orchestra and choir were outstanding. Two senior girls sang ‘Panis Angelicus’ for post communion, we sang ‘Salve Regina’, ‘Go Ye Afar’ and ‘Full in the Panting Heart of Rome’ in honour of the Holy Father’s imminent visit. The Cathedral has not heard the like in a long time and the whole congregation loved it. Well done St. John’s!

I’m getting fitted for my chef uniforms tomorrow and starting culinary classes in 3 weeks!

  27. Joan M says:

I just finished checking in my husband and me online for our flight to London Gatwick tomorrow. We are heading to Cardigan, South Wales, to spend some time visiting my eldest brother, Canon Seamus Cunnane. He will be celebrating his 55th anniversary of Ordination on Saturday, June 12th.

  28. Adam Slide says:

DavidJ, I was at the Eucharistic Congress in Atlanta on Friday night too! We had a good time and I thought Fr. Patalinghug was great.

  29. QMJ says:

Got a job offer today for teaching fifth grade, which I accepted.

  30. Headed this week to NYC for Mass at Church of Our Saviour and then to weekend retreat. So happy, so very, very happy, that there are still places one can go in this land for worship, prayer and meditation in a manner befitting the dignity of the Church instituted by Our Lord. God bless the open hearts and resolute backbones of those who serve with unflinching faithfulness!

  31. Central Valley says:

Next Sunday my daughter will make her First Holy Communion in the Extraordinary Form at the hands on Msgr. Belluomini, who just celebrated his 50th anniversary of ordination.

  32. I would be seeing my wife and kids again after six months!

  33. JGR says:

We welcomed our first grandchild last week, a few days before our youngest child celebrated her second birthday. What blessings these little ones are!

  34. Agnes says:

Life is very difficult. But the good news is that I’m trusting God more. Lord, you are my strength and my shield, and your love endures forever.

  35. laurazim says:

Great news–eldest daughter graduated 8th grade (home schooled) and will enroll in a very authentically Catholic, very small private school in the fall. The weekend following the graduation (Pentecost Sunday), same daughter was Confirmed under the name Saint Lucy! The following weekend, two men were ordained to the Transitional Diaconate, with two more to follow in October in Brussels. And in just two weeks, two wonderful Deacons will be ordained to the Priesthood! Praise God!! +JMJ+

i’ve been visiting minneapolis for the past week and, yesterday, on the bus from downtown to uptown i got a call for a job offer. i was so excited and random strangers on the bus started congratulating me.

I will be moving in a few weeks a block away from the most beautiful mercidarian parish to live in community with some of the most beautiful Catholic women–truly a necessity for my spiritual growth.

a friend is entering the fsp seminary in nebraska.

i was asked to lead the music for First Friday sacred heart devotions and Adoration at a local church. a honor, a way for me to have influence over the music and, now that I will have an income, a way for me to continue improving one of the gifts God has given me for which i am most thankful.

Truly, i am blessed in ways i do not understand

  37. a catechist says:

On Sunday, Bishop Walker Nickless of Sioux City preached in the cathedral about the True Presence: very solid, doctrinal stuff. And he also spoke about the concrete ways we show reverence for that Reality, including modest dress in church, fasting, worthy reception, etc., following up on his remarks about that were just published in the diocesan paper, The Globe. Thanks be to God for a bishop doing his job!

  38. Dr. Eric says:

We found out that we are having a 5th child, due to be born in late January/early February!

    Number Five is alive!

  39. Mrs. Bear says:

I mentioned this on another section but I needed to say it again:

Our pastor moved the Tabernacle into the centre of the sanctuary this weekend!

  40. Agnes of Prague says:

We are really moving along with starting an Adoration Chapel at our parish!

Also, like lux_perpetua I have a friend entering the FSSP Seminary! Praise God! (I wonder if it’s the same…)
