Hey! Catholic Dems! Look at what you are supporting!

From The Catholic League:

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on a Democratic National Convention (DNC) event hosted by Catholics for Choice (CFC):

If the Ku Klux Klan were hosting a panel discussion on racial relations at the Republican National Convention, the Republicans would rightly be condemned for doing so. But no price will be paid by the Democrats for allowing the most notoriously anti-Catholic organization in the nation, Catholics for Choice, to host a panel on religious liberty. [?!?] “Keeping the Faith in the Democratic Party: Protecting Religious Liberty for Everyone” is scheduled to meet between 3:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. today.

Catholics for Choice (formerly Catholics for a Free Choice) is not simply a pro-abortion group: it is decisively anti-Catholic. Twice condemned by the bishops’ conference, its stated goal, according to its previous head, Frances Kissling, is to “overthrow” the Catholic Church. The current president, Jon O’Brien, has been equally vicious in his statements against Catholicism. He has been preoccupied this year opposing the religious liberty campaign organized by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Thus the perversity of having him command a panel discussion on religious liberty at the DNC.

In 1995, Marjorie Reiley Maguire, who for years worked closely with the leadership of CFC, branded it “an anti-woman organization” staffed by people who never go to Mass. Lavishly funded by the likes of the Ford Foundation, it would collapse if it had to rely on Catholic contributions—or even non-Catholic individuals—for support.

Speaking at today’s event will be activists from a CFC-organized umbrella group, the Coalition for Liberty & Justice. Several of the groups that comprise this entity have hijacked the Catholic label in service of their anti-Catholic agenda. They include: CORPUS, DignityUSA, New Ways Ministry and the Women’s Ordination Conference. An array of radical left-wing groups with a history of Catholic bashing will also be on hand.

In other words, the DNC’s idea of religious liberty means welcoming anti-Catholic bigots to deliver their message of hate.

Catholics for Choice? Doesn’t that contradict the CCC and the CCL? If I may quote a statement from the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines regarding a different organization with the same ideals: “Any Catholic who freely identifies himself or herself with this group gravely errs.”

    AD IESV PER MARIAM,
    Filipino Catholic.

  2. wmeyer says:

C4C is an oxymoron. Alternately, it might be considered that they are not Catholic. They cannot be both.

  3. Sissy says:

C4C: Orwellian doublespeak. If they were honest, it would be “Catholics for Infanticide” or “Catholics for Murder”.

  4. rodin says:

    Can Catholics be Democrats?

  5. Sissy says:

    “Can Catholics be Democrats?”

Bill Clinton would tell us that it depends upon the meaning of “Catholic” and “Democrat”. It’s my opinion that a faithful, orthodox Catholic – that is one who believes what the Church teaches – can’t simultaneously be a Democrat, given what the party openly, proudly stands for. You can’t serve two masters.

  6. wmeyer says:

    “If they were honest…”

So now you want a miracle?

  7. Sissy says:

    wmeyer: LOL!! Good point.

  8. wmeyer says:

I have been saying for years that they are lemmings, and when they begin leading the charge off the cliff, I will give them more credit. As it is, they only want the rest of us to jump.

  9. Sieber says:

Ford Foundation! Henry Ford was a great supporter of Hitler in his early days & Adolf was an admirer of Fords assembly line efficiencies.

  10. Mdepie says:

Am I the only one wondering why Cardinal Dolan is going to offer benediction at the close of the DNC festivities ? After all the DNC is going to be featuring a number of speakers to push the idea that unless there is unlimited abortion on demand and contraceptives paid for specifically by the Catholic Church there is a “war on women”. Perhaps someone can explain what a Benediction in this context means? What does it hope to achieve? I am mystified.

  11. jessicahoff says:

Catholics here being defined as Protestants?

  12. Phillip says:

@ mdepie: perhaps he’s planning a surprise exorcism.
    @ jessicahoff: well played.

    http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/democratic-platform-endorses-taxpayer-funded-abortions_651589.html

The radical pro-abortion platform has been there since 1999. Now, it includes free abortions through Obamacare-read the platform above. And, here is a snippet from this article.

“The 2012 Democratic party also endorses an unrestricted right to abortion-on-demand. According to the platform, on the issue of abortion “there is no place for politicians or government to get in the way.” In 2003, Obama was asked if he was pro-choice on abortion “in all situations including the late-term thing.” Obama replied: “I’m pro-choice.”

“In 1992, then-Democratic presidential candidate Bill Clinton tried to soften the party’s image on abortion by expressing his desire to make abortion “safe, legal, and rare.” Although the Democratic party platforms in 2000 and 2004 stated the party’s goal is to make abortion “rare,” the 2012 platform makes no such claim. “In 2000, the Democratic platform said the party’s goal was ‘to make abortion less necessary and more rare,’ Jeff Jacoby wrote in the Boston Globe last week. “The 2004 platform declared, ‘Abortion should be safe, legal, and rare.’ But even calling for abortion to be ‘rare’ is now too much for the Democrats’ platform committee, which deleted the word in 2008.” The word “rare” did not make a comeback in 2012. ”

In addition, as pointed out above, civil unions are now part of the platform. Hey, if there are any Catholic Dems commenting on this blog, I would like them to defend their position as Catholics.

  14. AnnAsher says:

    The oxymoron’s abound !

  15. Sissy says:

Democrat platform: abortion up to the moment of birth with no restrictions, tax-payer funded birth control and abortion, unnatural “marriage”, the word “God” removed from all planks….that’s just the warm-up. Sounds very Catholic, heh?

  16. Cantate says:

Not the Democrat party; rather, the Death party. Card. Dolan “volunteered” to give a prayer, but Obama did not proffer an offer.
As for “Catholics for a Free Choice,” I have not heard of any RC chancery saying that they could not use the word “Catholic.” Recall the Detroit chancery’s admonition to Michael Voris when his website was RealCatholicTV! (And it was indeed REAL Catholic.)

  17. Sissy says:

According to this DNC video, “The government is the only thing we all belong to”.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gLa9Te8Blw

I sort of thought it was the other way around? These people are scary.

  18. wmeyer says:

Sissy, what a stunningly honest profession of the inverted relationship they support!

  19. Sissy says:

wmeyer: See, they can tell the truth once in a while!

  20. The Cobbler says:

“As for “Catholics for a Free Choice,” I have not heard of any RC chancery saying that they could not use the word “Catholic.””
From the article: “Catholics for Choice (formerly Catholics for a Free Choice) is not simply a pro-abortion group: it is decisively anti-Catholic. Twice condemned by the bishops’ conference…” (emphasis Fr. Z’s)

    @Sissy & wmeyer: Ha!

  21. Supertradmum says:

Hey, guess who said this? Gramsci. 1919
” A society does not exist if not in a State, which is the source and the end of all law and of all duty, which is the guarantee of permanence and of the success of every social activity. The proletarian revolution is such when it gives life to a typically proletarian State, keeper of proletarian law, which develops its essential functions as emanation of proletarian life and power.”

I just put that video on my blog with a short comment. That is the socialist belief, that all individuals exist for the State and the State does not have to be the servant of the people. The individual no longer has any identity except that which the State grants each one. The family has no identity and therefore no rights. There is no natural law, as the State determines all laws and the objective moral order is overturned by complete tyrannical relativism.

If we belong to the State, we no longer belong to ourselves or God.

How far we have come in four years. Gramsci would be pleased.

  22. Johnno says:

And Cardinal Dolan’s appearence there will be sure portrayed as if he is a-ok with these groups.

Cardinal Dolan is going to have to do better than a mere prayer and subtle wording to get through to these folks. If that’s what he’s thinking, he is sadly mistaken. He is only going to inadvertently lend them credibility.

He’s going to have to stand there and officially blast them all by calling out their evil directly and explicitly in his prayer, otherwise he’s playing right into their hands by being vague.

  23. wmeyer says:

I am proud to say that my favorite local priest has very plainly said in his homilies that Catholics cannot be pro-choice, and people who are pro-choice cannot be Catholic. He did not dance around it, he was direct, and underscored his point by repetition for those who may have been slumbering.

  24. acardnal says:

Cobbler, you raise an excellent point about the use of the word “Catholic” in the organization “Catholics for a Free Choice” and yet no bishop has told them to omit the word “Catholic” or be sued. AND YET, “Real Catholic TV.com” was forced by a bishop to remove the word “Catholic” from its name; it’s now known as “Church Militant.TV”.

  25. Jean Marie says:

I work for a Catholic Church on Long Island, New York, and I encounter these people all the time. I just don’t understand their logic! And yes, they voted for Obama in 2008. I still have a great deal of anger at them for what they are responsible for and their continuing blindness. I know we’re suppose to pray for them but it ain’t easy, especially when we know we have to suffer for their actions and decisions.

  26. Michelle F says:

Cardinal Dolan should use this prayer:

Ab illo benedicaris in cujus honore cremaberis. Amen.

    Translation:
Be thou blessed by Him in Whose honor thou shalt be burned. Amen.

Used for the blessing of the incense at High Mass according to the Tridentine Missal, but suitable for other occasions as well!

    :D

  27. Alice says:

    Cantate and acardnal,
The article states that “Catholics” for Free Choice (now apparently called “Catholics” for Choice) has been condemned by the NCCB (now the USCCB) two times. The first condemnation was in 1993 and was reaffirmed in 2000. The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops has condemned them twice as well. Bishop Bruskewitz excommunicated all the members in his diocese a while back too. The reason they continue to call themselves “Catholic” is because they’re disobedient, not because the bishops have ignored them.

  28. acardnal says:

Alice, you miss my point, I think. They need to threaten lawsuits to get them to STOP using the word “Catholic”. They have done this before. They “own” the word “Catholic” in the legal world. Recent case in point is “RealCatholicTV. com” with Michael Voris. They should also sue the “National Catholic Reporter” for the same reason. They are not Catholic.

  29. The Cobbler says:

@acardnal, I guess I should’ve addressed that one to Cantate, whom I was quoting, before responding with the relevant bit of the article to the effect that with regard to CFC the whole bishop’s conference has done more than just regulate the name “Catholic”. Basically, what Alice said, although one could argue both ways with regard to the rarity of the USCCB taking a united stand for orthodoxy (on the one hand, it’s a shame it’s so rare, on the other, it must mean something when something so rare occurs).

  30. The Cobbler says:

Woops, cross-posted and… I guess I missed that point too; I hadn’t heard that the Real Catholic TV incident came down to a lawsuit of all things.

  31. acardnal says:

I can’t speak for EWTN but I have watched and listened to it for years. At one time Mother Angelica felt that the Bishops’ Conference was putting undue pressure on her to do things their way (the liberal way), but she was no dummy. She decided to incorporate EWTN and removed herself from any legal position of authority and also from any “obedience” to the bishops. It was no longer her network technically. (Please note she did not use the word “Catholic” in the name of her network either. Smart woman.) The Conference decided to create their own television network to compete with EWTN. The Conference network failed.

  32. acardnal says:

Addendum to my posts regarding the bishops, USCCB vs “Catholics for a Free Choice”:

Can 212 § 2 says: “Nevertheless, no undertaking is to claim the name ‘Catholic’ without the consent of competent ecclesiastical authority.”

Come on bishops, do something in the courts. . . ecclesiastical and civil.

  33. wmeyer says:

acardnal: They outsmarted themselves with Voris. ChurchMilitant.TV is a much stronger name, and leaves no room for doubt of the position held.
