After the sad election last November, the President joked around with Barbara Walters on ABC about his daughters being surrounded by guns all the time. I am sure that, as a father, he thinks that’s a mighty fine perk.
His daughters are surrounded by guns, but I’ll bet the suggestion that the teachers of your children could be armed will get nowhere with the White House.
I am sure everyone agrees that the protection details of a sitting president and his family shouldn’t be diminished. The scenario of the kidnapping of a president’s daughter could spark a constitutional crisis these days. A fictitious scenario like this was played out in the fourth and fifth seasons of the TV series, The West Wing. Pres. Bartlett felt compelled to invoke the 25th Amendment. (As an aside, I used to think the White House in The West Wing was liberal. HAH!) I have no problem with former presidents having some Secret Service protection, for obvious reasons.
Nevertheless, it is ironic that, even as he is now working to disarm law-abiding citizens, Obama signed into effect legislation that will continue his own Secret Service protection for life.
Guns and the right to protect yourself are only for the elite, it seems.

Just normal for O. Nothing out of the ordinary.
Just the typical “Animal Farm” attitude of our ruling masters – one set of rules for them, and another for us, the serfs.
What baffles me is his supportive supporters and their non-stop supporting him.
I happen to be conservative, so I’m not in that group, but if a President for whom I voted acted with even a little bit of the arrogance and impunity with which Obama acts, I would become un-supportive in about 2 seconds flat. I really don’t understand it. He’s not THAT charismatic.

This is probably a good time to remind the gentle readership: whoever you are, if you chose not to vote in the past election, for whatever reason, you made this happen. Try to remember that in four years.
It is more than odd that the liberal mindset in D. C. find the right to abortion in the Constitution. Yet, the unequivocal rights of the 2nd amendment seem unclear to them. The words for our right to bear arms are clear but there are no words even remotely stated to allow the killing of a human being in the document. How are we supposed to compromise with this mindset?
What really seems weird is prayer petitions in regards to government leadership in the mass. Some of these I have a really hard time praying for. Often they are for wisdom and compassion for the poor and the immigrant and religious freedom, but, our government officials and many Catholic institutions already believe they are most wise and compassionate towards the poor and the immigrant in all their spending, taxing, law-making and right-giving and taking. It is as if we are often praying for the government to grant the government do what God has given us to do. Why don’t we pray for their conversion instead? Isn’t this the request of Divine Mercy?

Guns make us less safe
Hardly ironic or hypocritical. The new law simply returns the the original 1965 law which provided for lifetime protection. Why it was rolled back in 1990 I don’t know, but I’m sure there’s a story there. Certainly post-9/11 nobody would seriously consider revoking security for a former president. The restoration of the 1965 policy was a no-brainer, in fact the new law was drawn up by a repubican .
Further, it’s quite obvious to anyone that the weapons that surround the president and his family are wielded by extraordinarily trained and skilled shooters. Comparing a trained secret service agent to a gang-banger with his pants halfway down his rear is like comparing apples and horses.
I think their hatred of this president has caused many to loose their judgment and objectivity with respect to questions that are quite obvious when considered rationally. We need to elevate our discussions above the bumper-sticker level.

First of all, let’s get one thing straight. I don’t hate this president. I think his attitude towards his office, his duties, the Constitution, this country, and God is wrong, destructive, and dangerous. But the list of people I hate is very short indeed, and he’s not one of them.
Secondly, I think you probably haven’t had much exposure to law enforcement training or sport shooting in general.
Most law enforcement officers treat their firearms as just another tool, like a nightstick or a radio. Many only fire their sidearms once a year at “qualifying” and generally are not good shots at all, unless they are also sport shooters. My sport-shooting police officer friends have told me some hair raising stories about bad police marksmanship, but if you want an example you need only look at that NYPD shootout last summer, where police officers fired on a bad guy and managed to shoot NINE innocent bystanders.
Where you will find the real “extraordinarily trained and skilled shooters” are the ordinary citizens who are competitive shooters — especially military rifle, combat pistol (USPSA, IPSCC), Cowboy Action, and similar sports. These call for speed, accuracy, timing, tactics, and judgment (especially the shoot/no shoot judgment). Many of our members are veterans or police, but just as many are ordinary folks who have never been in uniform. While we have the “gamers” who are looking to win the stage (and can put 25 rounds on multiple targets in under 20 seconds), most of us are just looking to improve our general skills. I rejoice when I break 40.
And there are an awful lot of us out here. There are six venues in our immediate area; we could shoot every weekend if we wanted to, and many of our friends do.
The problem is that you (and the president) think the world is divided up into “gangbangers” and some mythical elite that you feel should be the only ones permitted to use guns, while ignoring the overwhelming numbers of responsible, ordinary folks who are trained and competent (or better than competent).
If you want to see somebody who is letting fact-free emotion govern his opinion, take a glance in the mirror.
The irony is lost on Obama supporters.
cyejbv………nope, not THAT charismatic, at least not to people who know what he REALLY believes. It’s kind of like when people first start dating. I remember a very good looking and charming guy that asked me out when I was in College. I was the envy of all the girls. Well, when we finally had our date, I personally found him to be not only not my type, but offensive in his language and attitude. The “charisma” went right out the window. Never looked at him the same way again. You would think it would be the same way with the President, but low and behold there are still those who are madly in love with him, and this is despite the fact that he obviously has little regard for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
