“He [Satan] will set up a counter-Church which will be the ape of the Church because, he the devil, is the ape of God. It will have all the notes and characteristics of the Church, but in reverse and emptied of its divine content. It will be a mystical body of the anti-Christ that will in all externals resemble the mystical body of Christ. In desperate need for God, whom he nevertheless refuses to adore, modern man in his loneliness and frustration will hunger more and more for membership in a community that will give him enlargement of purpose, but at the cost of losing himself in some vague collectivity.”
“Who is going to save our Church? Not our bishops, not our priests and religious. It is up to you, the people. You have the minds, the eyes, and the ears to save the Church. Your mission is to see that your priests act like priests, your bishops act like bishops.”
- Fulton Sheen

A monthly subscription donation means I have steady income I can plan on. I put you my list of benefactors for whom I pray and for whom I often say Holy Mass.
In view of the rapidly changing challenges I now face, I would like to add more $10/month subscribers. Will you please help?

"But if, in any layman who is indeed imbued with literature, ignorance of the Latin language, which we can truly call the 'catholic' language, indicates a certain sluggishness in his love toward the Church, how much more fitting it is that each and every cleric should be adequately practiced and skilled in that language!" - Pius XI
"Let us realize that this remark of Cicero (Brutus 37, 140) can be in a certain way referred to [young lay people]: 'It is not so much a matter of distinction to know Latin as it is disgraceful not to know it.'" - St. John Paul II
Grant unto thy Church, we beseech Thee, O merciful God, that She, being gathered together by the Holy Ghost, may be in no wise troubled by attack from her foes. O God, who by sin art offended and by penance pacified, mercifully regard the prayers of Thy people making supplication unto Thee, and turn away the scourges of Thine anger which we deserve for our sins. Almighty and Everlasting God, in whose Hand are the power and the government of every realm: look down upon and help the Christian people that the heathen nations who trust in the fierceness of their own might may be crushed by the power of thine Arm. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. R. Amen.

I hope that Old Fashioned had brandy in it! [Tisk. Rye.]
Oishii! Fr, have you had a good bowl of Bun Bo Hue before? If not, then I highly recommend it to you. http://wanderingchopsticks.blogspot.com/2008/06/bun-bo-hue-vietnamese-hue-style-beef.html
[There is a good Vietnamese place nearby, but they don’t have that on the menu, alas.]
Home grown tomatoes, sweet corn on the cob and home made basil-cilantro pesto on a slice of green chile pinon nut bread. It just doesn’t get much better than this. Oh, and sweet tea.
Am just about to begin cooking old fashioned beef and lentil soup. Not very sophisticated but rib sticking good.
I love me some Pho.
Wow! The food of superheros.
[Hard to beat well-made Pho.]
Just a nice caesar salad, but we had a copious brunch after Mass at the local diner, as one does in NJ. I think I’ll make an old fashioned now, too, but I usually leave out the orange. And I never use brandy, but to each his own, acardnal!
Yummy homemade eggrolls–no fish sauce though :(–and stir fry with whole wheat noodles. It was really good. Now we will have chocolate cake to celebrate a birthday.
Here in the DC area it’s fairly cool weather so we had dinner on the back deck: grilled skirt steak, string beans, yellow squash with bacon, fried onions, and cheddar (it’s a Southern recipe), with a nice glass of Chardonnay for mom and dad. Pretty simple, but a good, quiet way to bring summer to a close…
All of my daughters are here with me this weekend. In a few minutes we are going to the Redondo Beach pier for some seafood and white wine or cocktails.
I love goi cuon (salad rolls). I have them every week. Since I started my diet sometimes I only get two and that is my dinner. Sometimes four. On the occasion that I eat there on Fridays, I ask them to hold the pork.
SouthernBaron,
When one is from the upper Midwest like Fr. Z and myself, Brandy is the key ingredient in our Old Fashioned’s not Southern Comfort of anything else. [Tisk tisk. Unless you use Rye, as you are supposed to.] Wisconsin used to be the largest per capita consumer of Brandy in the USA. It has recently fallen to second place after the District of Columbia.
Quote from the article below:
“Wisconsin has the highest percentage of retail spending on brandy in the United States, according to a spokeswoman for E.&J. Gallo Winery, which produces E&J Brandy.
In 2012, California-based Korbel shipped about 324,000 nine-liter cases of brandy. Of those, about 141,000 – 43.5% of Korbel’s production – went to Wisconsin.”
It’s cold here in the winter.

Home made arancini with fennel and a Puligny Montrachet followed by marinated eye filet on the grill with roasted mini beets, mushrooms and goat chess paired with a 1998 Penfolds 389 (decanted) then a Joan Baez concert then a prune and armagnac tart later on. Obviously all at a friend’s place for a catch up.
Two perfectly poured pints of Rare Vos!
Tomato basil risotto with leftover rotisserie chicken to use it up, steamed zucchini. Sadly, no dessert save for a cookie from the jar, and we’re out of wine….
Vietnamese cuisine FTW! (I think this is your first time mentioning having Viet food?)
It’s a new day over here as I check Fr Z’s blog – dinner last night was take-away from our excellent local Italian Restaurant – spaghetti bolognese and penne amatriciana. It’s nice to take a break from cooking once in a while!
Being an over-skilled meat-cutting wage slave with loads of culinary talent. Alas, I am underpaid, so it logically follows that I am not married since I do not sit behind a desk. I am by myself. I opened a can of beans.
Chicken curry (yellow) and rice. It was really good!
Grilled both rib-eyes and corn on the cob, add a big salad with copious tomatoes and a glass of Malbec.
Of course the Reverend Father is right: an Old Fashioned is made with Rye. A Vieux Carre is made with Rye and Brandy. My twist, the Ancien Regime is made with Brandy and a secret ingredient.
My dearly beloved is an excellent BBQ chef! He made grilled chicken breasts, potato wedges and stuffed mushrooms. I added a simple broccoli, cucumber and tomato salad. Yum……..
it was frighteningly hot here yesterday, still is. so I threw together chicken salad and put that into some good roles I picked up at the store. I also bought water mellon, I adore the stuff, and served that for dinner. My sister, brother in law and fiancé all enjoyed it. Afterwords, I told them they could help themselves to ice cream sandwiches in the freezer. Just had a chicken salad sandwich and water mellon left-over for lunch today and it was just as yummy. the temp is supposed to hit 98 degrees here today and so I needed something cold and refreshing. Stay out of the heat Minnesota. :)
Beautifully simple meal, Father.
For us, it was cookout night with friends. Hamburgers, hot dogs, tortilla chips and salsa.
