There have always been pro-lifers in the Democratic Party. In fact, it was the votes of pro-life Democrats in Congress, with the Republican pro-lifers, who kept passing the Hyde Amendment, which banned Medicaid funding of abortions every year. However, many of these Democrats were moderate or conservative.
What we should mourn is the near-extinction of the pro-life, liberal Democrat such as the late Wisconsin U.S. Senator William Proxmire.
Dimtri,
There WERE pro-life Democrats until after 2000 when the abortion and other “reproductive health” planks were added to the party platform. I was a conservative Democrat up until then. After the 2000 election the scales were removed from my eyes and I realized the Democrats have no real will to be prolife. I am now an independent, and I vote according to our faith, not by party line. The Democrats have passed the event horizon for even consideration as being vagely “pro-life.”
You forgot one – Matheson. I didn’t look up the state. But now there should be 6.
[Thanks.]
Congressman Cuellar’s brother (D) is the Sheriff in Laredo and a practicing Catholic. Laredo is an active Catholic area but most people down here are Dems.
I wonder if they voted for the un-Affordable Healthcare Act?
I was once a Democrat also. I remember that Pelosi backed a lot of Democrats who said they were pro-life in order to get the House in Democrat hands. Then they ended up voting for Obamacare.
Thankfully the voters took care of a lot of them in 2010. Anyone with a brain knew the bill would make it possible for taxpayer money to be used for abortions. Of course not many of them bothered to read the bill in the first place and did not seem to be interested in listening to those who had. My Rep. is a Republican and a Doctor who actually read the thing and he tried to sound the alarm on many fronts about what was coming. Harry probably won’t even let this bill see the light of day in the Senate. That is why your vote will count in the Senate races coming up. Democrat money is pouring into our state to shore up Democrat Mary Landrieu who said that she would vote for Obamacare again. We have a lot of misguided people in this state when it comes to the Landrieu family machine politics. Obama says jump and she asks how high–but comes back to the state and says something quite different.
The Republican running against her (but not the only one–and that helps her) is a Doctor and a US Representative. He still comes back to the state when he can and gives medical care to those who are in need — and he is pro life.
It is nice to know that there are still a few Democrats out there that are guided by morality and virtue, and that they will not cave to the pressures of their party.
One small correction: Hanna is NY-22 (he’s my congressman). I am a Republican committeeman who has made it his mission to unseat Hanna in the primary. I am currently supporting a gentleman named Michael Vasquez for congress 2014.
