I visited Paris in 2006 and Rome in 2008…every time I see your photos I want to go back! Safe travels.
And this Sunday, the canonization of two Ottoman-era Melkite mystic nuns!
Saint-to-be Marie of Jesus Crucified, aka Mariam Baouardy, survived a jihadist slashing her throat and dumping her in an alley in Alexandria. She was saved by Our Lady, but she always bore the scars and had a husky voice.
I bet they don’t talk about that in the homily, though.
I can’t help but notice how in a lot of these church’s, the architecture and art are truly awesome…
…but when 20th century amenities like electric lights were added, despite all our technological and economic advantages, they are often done in a way that detracts or distracts from the beauty instead of enhancing it.
That’s not to say I haven’t seen some churches with lighting and other modern features that further enhanced their beauty and suitability for worship and meditation. But just as often I see garish lighting like in the picture above and speaker systems that are more visible than where ever the tabernacle was moved to.
I here ya’ iamlucky13. When they “beautified” Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Detroit in recent years, they used light fixtures reminiscent of the air intakes on a SR-71.
