The other day I posted about sending a Combat Rosary to Fishwrap‘s Michael Sean Winters, who had had a little nutty about “militaristic” imagery. I wondered whether or not MSW would acknowledge receipt.
Today, I see that he responded! HERE
Lastly, Fr. John Zuhlsdorf has been speculating about how I would respond to his gift of a “combat rosary” to me. It arrived Tuesday. I do not have Father’s mailing address so I shall communicate to him here:
Dear Fr. Zuhlsdorf,
Thank you for the gift of a rosary. I pray the rosary using one my dear beloved grandmother of happy memory gave me, and she was combative enough for the three of us.
Kind regards,
Michael Sean Winters
First, I’m glad that he received it. I’m delighted that uses one. Coincidentally, I had written: “I hope Winters decides to use the Rosary… or dig out the old chaplet that perhaps his, I dunno, grandmother had. So long as he uses one.”
So, who was right in the poll? It appears that the 3%! “Yes, publicly, with a kind note of thanks.”
Will MSW respond to or acknowledge Fr. Z's gift of a Combat Rosary?
- No. (57%, 751 Votes)
- Yes, publicly, with a snarky comment. (27%, 357 Votes)
- Yes, privately, with a terse acknowledgement. (8%, 100 Votes)
- Yes, privately, with a kind note of thanks. (6%, 82 Votes)
- Yes, publicly, with a kind note of thanks. (3%, 39 Votes)
Total Voters: 1,329

Frankly, I find his response to be not only kind, but charming. As a matter of fact, it inclines me to consider not picking on him any more…
…
…
Nahhh.
Finally, I thought I had included my return address. No matter. FWIW, MSW: My return address is always on the sidebar. Feel free to drop a Christmas card and I’ll return the favor.
The moderation queue is on.
He read the survey and chose the least expected response. It had to be public.
I’m not a fan of his, but kudos to him for his reply. I guess it sometimes helps to have a break from sniping and to show good will. (I’m talking about myself, as much as him.)
Cool !
Now we can ask his dear grandmother to intercede for him.
Sorry, but I don’t think we can give him full credit since he only responded AFTER the post. He also specifically referenced the post which makes it seem as if he is responding BECAUSE of the post, rather than because of common decency. Also, I would hope that someone in the media would be able to put forth a minimal about of effort and locate a means of direct contact.
[I’m willing to take him at his word.]
Father, do you not think that Mr. Winters’ response is deserving of a good, ol’ fashioned “Fr. Z. Kudos”?
I am pleasantly surprised!
That is great-thank the Lord. There is always hope. Let’s pray hard for his reversion to the Faith!
I’m glad he responded in that manner. It showed a touch of humor as well as a bit of charity and graciousness.
Well done MSW and Father Z !
Kudos to MSW!
I wouldn’t classify the critique’s of the work of Mr. Winters as “picking on him”. He works for a publication that has been condemned by the Bishop for the last 50 or so years, and his columns are often mean-spirited and misleading. It is reasonable to say that Mr. Winters is far more interested in being a good Democrat than a good Catholic.
Since he claims that he didn’t receive your address, that means that someone forwarded the rosary to him without your note, which obviously had the mailing address at the bottom! That, or he didn’t bother to look at the note.
Nice to see it all work out.

I tweeted to him to say that if the rosary didn’t suit him, I would happily give it a home. I’ve been coveting one of those!
Good. May Our Lady lead him to work more befitting the dignity of our communion as Catholic Christians.
Thanks be to God! The more of us praying the rosary, the better. How awesome he has his grandmother’s rosary to pray.
Perhaps MSW — or maybe this is more a Spadaro/Figueroa angle — will turn his theological ministrations in the direction of the Goldman Sachs/Venezuelan communist dictator connection — I should think that is the sort of secularist autocracy they would hold as exemplar for the rest of us American Catholics in the alleged theocracy of their suspicious minds.
Praise God! HOPE is our only resource.
Dear Mr Winters:
I’ll bet she was!
You are so fortunate to have her rosary, and if she was combative, it must be have been well used—and I pray even so to the present, for Our Lady.
Dear Fr. Z,
I think it’s time for a new poll, “Will wonders never cease?”
Mother of the Most Holy Rosary, pray for us!
