Aiii! Thank you Father! I haven’t heard their boys’ choir. It looks bigger than Westminster Cathedral’s! And what a glorious sound. The Victoria O quam gloriosum is one of my favourite motets, have sung it so many times (the Mass setting is… glorious). On my yearly London visits I make a point of going to the Sunday High Mass there, but have only heard the senior choir, men and women, I don’t think the boys were there? The choir gallery, on the left of the nave before the cupola, seems rather small and if you’re near the back (it’s always packed) you can’t always see who’s up there. Anyway, I have some CDs of the adult choir, and I will certainly buy this one. I love the Spanish Baroque school, have a book of motets from former choir days, and only wish I could use it again (Esquivel, Morales, Guerrero, Ortiz, Victoria, Rivaflecha…). Aiii.
Thank you.
Correction: The choir gallery is on the right, facing the High Altar.
jaykay, this is a choir from the London Oratory school. It’s not a Brompton Oratory choir…
The Schola from the London Oratory School sings the Saturday evening Mass at the London Oratory Church in term time.
Elizzabeth: you are of course correct. In fact, I had heard them before, as part of John Elliott Gardner’s choirs in his great 1989 recording of the Monteverdi Vespers in St. Mark’s, Venice. It was broadcast on BBC TV back then, and subsequently issued on CD, then DVD. Well worth getting, not least for JEG’s lovely introduction, on the DVD version.
