Excellent picture.
The fact the altar boy steals the scene makes it all the better.
Dignity and respect for a Holy man, he makes me proud to be a Catholic.
Just to clarify, this is the NYPD Holy Name Society. It was a glorious Mass, Father. That little altar boy that stole the seen is my 9 year old son! Fidelis Ad Mortem!!
[Usque ad mortem!]
Some of you may be legitimately puzzled by the Cappa Magna.
In his book that has something to offend everyone, the late Prof. Paul Fussell wrote that the two main social divides (in the USA) are between those who entertain in their domestic premises, and those who do not, and those who read to be surprised, and those who read to have their notions confirmed:
The Cappa Magna in the Light of Nature, Rationality, and Mystery, by Professor Peter Kwasniewski.
I was there. It was a wonderful Mass, but there was so much incense that the fire alarm went off.
I was blessed to attend this Mass too — my first ever Pontifical High Mass — it was absolutely beautiful! I loved seeing all the NYPD in attendance – so inspiring.
There is a new interview with Cardinal Zen at the Catholic World Report site. I have made four attempts to post about this, and oddly, none of them go through.
On behalf of all of us Father, please know that your honorary membership with the NYPD Holy Name Society is alive and well. Please keep up the great work and know that we are praying for you and all of our holy priests!
Those flowing red robes STILL give me the heebie-jeebies. Thanks to Fr. Z for explaining
why!
“…rough men stand ready…”
Kerry: Indeed. God bless ’em all.
Beautiful day with my Holy Name Society Brothers. What a blessing to meet His Eminence Cardinal Zen. If anyone knows anything about the persecuted church its him. Praying for you Cardinal Zen
Good to know the Holy Name Society is not entirely a thing of the past!

A little history on that particular cappa: it belongs to the Paulus Institute, the organization that has been presenting Pontifical Solemn Masses at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. We received it from William Cardinal Baum, our patron until his death in 2015, and he received it from his predecessor as Archbishop of Washington (1948-1973), Patrick Cardinal O’Boyle. Whether it has a provenance before Cardinal O’Boyle we do not know. Perhaps someone in this wide readership can enlighten us. We are most pleased and honored that it could be part of the celebration by Cardinal Zen.
