These Daily Rome Shots are SO evocative! They are causing serious bouts of Romanitas Depravation Syndrome. So much so that I am determined to get there this fall if I have to stow away in the hole of a tramp steamer.

This pasta with mushrooms (Or is it truffles?) looks delicious. Can Father Z enlighten us with a name and recipe?

That does look good. “In vino veritas.”

From Cato the Elder’s “De agri cultura” written c. 160 BC, a recipe for Roman doughnuts:

    “Globi”

    Ingredients :
    ½ cup ricotta cheese
½ cup spelt or wheat flour
    Lard for frying
    ¼ cup honey
    Poppy seeds for garnish

These Roman doughnuts could be perfect after Holy Mass next Sunday or for your neighborhood’s next Triumphal March.

Semper G: or for selling at the Games in your local amphitheatre. Along with the ocelot spleens and otters’ noses. Oh yes, and the vulture wine ;)

  5. Semper Gumby says:

jaykay: “Take me out to the amphitheater, take me out to the plebes. Buy me some garum and otter’s noses”

“Ocelot spleens! Get yer red-hot ocelot spleens here!”

  6. Semper Gumby says:

Harryus Carayus: “Hey! Whaddya know? In the seats today is Abeus Fromanus, the Ocelot Spleen King of Rome! …and another swing and a miss by Soyus Boyus. He’s gotta work on that swing, six months as a galley slave will give him the arms of Hercules. It’s good to see so many barbarians in the seats today. Hey! You Gauls! It’s not “Bouiuse!” it’s “Boo!”
