Re: your ad about French wines made by monks —

I just saw this old January story about seven newly discovered exoplanets, named TRAPPIST-1 through TRAPPIST-7, officially after the astronomy group’s favorite beer.

But obviously also named after the Trappists themselves….

So yes. The Trappists have their own star system!!! Very convenient for expansion of the order! (And production of the beers.)

Sorry for the CNN link; but it has all kinds of NASA graphics, including portraits of all seven planets, and an artist’s rendition of a TRAPPIST-1 travel poster.

Actually… it turns out that it was a team from the University of Liege. And when they discovered exoplanets by telescope, they needed to name the telescope, so that they could name the planets after the telescope.

So, being Belgians, they had toasted the discovery with their favorite beer, and it was Trappist beer. So they named the telescope TRAPPIST-South, which made the exoplanets TRAPPIST-1 through -3, and eventually -4 to -7 were added on, when people checked orbital transits.

One of the TRAPPIST telescopes is in Morocco, and the other is in Chile.

They have four new telescopes in Chile, all named SPECULOOS after the St. Nicholas Day/Christmas almond cookie.

No word yet about their availability in the UK?
