Meanwhile, the 13th London Chess Classic is underway from 1-10 December. 10-player single round-robin with a classical time control. Nine super grandmasters.   In other news, the dreaded MITTENS is back.

Meanwhile, white to move and… save his bacon!

Every purchase of Birra Nursia advances the monks’ efforts to restore monastic life in Norcia, the birthplace of St. Benedict.

NB: I’ll hold comments with solutions ’till the next day so there won’t be “spoilers” for others.

  1. A.S. Haley says:

White is down by only a Queen, a Rook and a Bishop. Not to worry, however — by judicious use of his eighth-rank promotion rights, he can achieve a draw by repetition:

    1. Ng6+ Kh7
    2. Pf8 = N+ RxN
    3. NxR+ Kh8
    4. Ng6+ etc. = draw.

  2. I played Mittens again and lost, as usual. Demoralizing to lose to a cat all the time.
