per canon 1210, local Bishops can now approve the use of a parish church for a live performance of Kenny Loggins and Dolly Parton’s classic ballad ‘Islands in the stream’ (1983) but not the celebration of mass according to the 1962 missal https://t.co/ZjVWVHHnIO

About this blog…
“This blog is like a fusion of the Baroque ‘salon’ with its well-tuned harpsichord around which polite society gathered for entertainment and edification and, on the other hand, a Wild West “saloon” with its out-of-tune piano and swinging doors, where everyone has a gun and something to say. Nevertheless, we try to point our discussions back to what it is to be Catholic in this increasingly difficult age, to love God, and how to get to heaven.” – Fr. Z

- The most evident mark of God’s anger and the most terrible castigation He can inflict upon the world are manifested when He permits His people to fall into the hands of clerics who are priests more in name than in deed, priests who practice the cruelty of ravening wolves rather than the charity and affection of devoted shepherds.

“Until the Lord be pleased to settle, through the instrumentality of the princes of the Church and the lawful ministers of His justice, the trouble aroused by the pride of a few and the ignorance of some others, let us with the help of God endeavor with calm and humble patience to render love for hatred, to avoid disputes with the silly, to keep to the truth and not fight with the weapons of falsehood, and to beg of God at all times that in all our thoughts and desires, in all our words and actions, He may hold the first place who calls Himself the origin of all things.”

Don’t rely on popes, bishops and priests.
“He [Satan] will set up a counter-Church which will be the ape of the Church because, he the devil, is the ape of God. It will have all the notes and characteristics of the Church, but in reverse and emptied of its divine content. It will be a mystical body of the anti-Christ that will in all externals resemble the mystical body of Christ. In desperate need for God, whom he nevertheless refuses to adore, modern man in his loneliness and frustration will hunger more and more for membership in a community that will give him enlargement of purpose, but at the cost of losing himself in some vague collectivity.”

"But if, in any layman who is indeed imbued with literature, ignorance of the Latin language, which we can truly call the 'catholic' language, indicates a certain sluggishness in his love toward the Church, how much more fitting it is that each and every cleric should be adequately practiced and skilled in that language!" - Pius XI

Grant unto thy Church, we beseech Thee, O merciful God, that She, being gathered together by the Holy Ghost, may be in no wise troubled by attack from her foes. O God, who by sin art offended and by penance pacified, mercifully regard the prayers of Thy people making supplication unto Thee, and turn away the scourges of Thine anger which we deserve for our sins. Almighty and Everlasting God, in whose Hand are the power and the government of every realm: look down upon and help the Christian people that the heathen nations who trust in the fierceness of their own might may be crushed by the power of thine Arm. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. R. Amen.

Interesting.
This presents a conundrum, however.
In Quo Primum, (which is an official Papal Bull and not merely a tweet or a bolletino) Pius V expressly states (emphases mine):
“Furthermore, by these presents and by virtue of Our Apostolic authority We give and grant in perpetuity that for the singing or reading of Mass in any church whatsoever, this Missal may be followed absolutely, without any scruple of conscience or fear of incurring any penalty, judgment or censure, and may be freely and lawfully used. Nor shall bishops, administrators, canons, chaplains, and other secular priests, or religious of whatsoever Order or by whatsoever title designated, be obliged to celebrate Mass otherwise than enjoined by Us. We likewise order and declare that no one whosoever shall be forced or coerced into altering this Missal and that this present Constitution can never be revoked or modified, but shall for ever remain valid and have the force of law.”
So…can a present or future pope actually rescind that?
How do we know which instruction to follow?
*Kenny Rogers…and that is insanity!
Most of my local parishes seem much more like concert venues and comedy shows than places of worship, so they’ll be pretty excited no doubt. :(
Ordained after 16th July 2021?
So in England and Wales… That’s about a total of 6 of them (across 22-24 dioceses)? Zero in that time in this diocese.
Talk about micromanaging.
Where to start? There’s the dramatic injustice of misattributing to Kenny Loggins what belongs to Kenny Rogers and then there’s the expected injustice of the Vatican being a bully.
There are several things wrong with the picture. Islands in the Stream is a Bee Gees song that was sung by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. Dolly’s old duet partner is no longer available for live performances although Kenny Loggins may be able to assist if it be Dolly’s pleasure.
Very sad that secular entertainment is allowed in front of a tabernacle but not divine worship.
My apologies for previous post. It turns out that in 2021 there were 21 priests ordained, and projected to be 26 in 2022 (final figures not confirmed).

@roma
I’ve heard it said that to accept it as forever binding is to deny the validity of, for example, the reforms of Pius XII. I prefer the pre-55, but I don’t find the 1962 Holy Week to be Protestantized either.
However, based on the language of Quo Primum, I do wonder if the 1570 version could hypothetically enjoy a pride of place.
I doubt I’ll ever be able to attend a Mass according to the 1570 missal, but it sure is fun to dream about.
One thing that is wrong is that the song referred to is actually Kenny Rogers…. but, the point still stands. Theatre of the Absurd coming from Rome these days.
Eureka! This provides us with a solution. Henceforth, the Extraordinary Form should just be referred to (including in parish bulletins) as “Islands in the Stream.”
Problem solved!
I sent this email to my archbishop this afternoon, Father. I hope it is in line with the advice you have repeatedly given us on how to address our bishops:
“Your Excellency,
My family and I attend St. Joseph Church in Downingtown. It is my home parish, the one in which I have received all of my sacraments and in which grandparents and father are buried. My children attended St. Joseph School and Bishop Shanahan High School and my wife and I are La Salle University graduates.
We are happy and faithful Catholics and active in our parish life. More than half of our friends are people we met through our Catholic communities and I am greatly troubled by the Church’s efforts to suppress the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM). If fully suppressed, I don’t know what to do and it weighs heavily on my mind.
I attend the TLM once a month. I would go more often but maintaining a full relationship with my home parish is important to our family. I feel drawn to the TLM, even though I know the Novus Ordo to be valid and often beautiful. Whatever the legitimate complaints against the NO, I have not seen liturgical abuse in my parish.
It seems clear to me that the Spirit is active and alive among the regularly attending TLM families with whom we have regular relationships. These families are wonderfully prayerful, faithful, and honorable. There ARE objections to Vatican II but they are faithfully addressed within the canons and catechism of our faith.
Rejecting these faithful Christians, pushing them out of the Church, and condemning them as heretics for continuing practices which are entirely within the text and context of Vatican II seems to me to be unchristian. Personally, I don’t know what to do here. What does one do when one’s own Holy Father has declared an unholy war on faithful Catholics to whom one owes a duty of faithfulness?
I respectfully ask that you take this message of brotherhood to your fellow bishops. It seems that some fail to recognize that quite a large number of regular parish Catholics have deep roots in, and fraternal concord with, our TLM sisters and brothers communities, and that this suppression of them directly attacks us as well.
Sincerely,
David Spaulding
St. Joseph Parish
Downingtown, PA”
Anyone else find it eerie that the same day ROME does this that Putin scraps the nuclear armament deal?
I know Our Lady of Akita mentioned bishop against bishop and cardinal vs Cardinal and corruption to the top!
I have a difficult time in seeing how these two historical moments are not equally bound up together in a great spiritual mystery.
Fire will rain from the sky, nations will be wiped out, those living will envy the dead.
Sounds like a nuclear statement to me. Rome is limiting its spiritual arms and the temporal world is ramping hers up!

Perhaps the thing to do is find a local but well known pop singer and have him be the choir for a TLM high Mass. John Doe in concert every Sunday afternoon at st David’s Catholic Church.
Loophole: Just hire Dolly Parton to sing the propers.
I believe that same C 1210 is used to allow protestant rites to be performed on catholic churches.
It just baffles me that in a catholic church, almost any christian rite may be lawfully executed (wether latin catholic, eastern catholic, or even protestant), and even music concerts may be done, except for the Roman Rite of 1967.
I just looked up Title IV on Rescripts in the Code of Canon Law which Fr. Z had mentioned in a previous articles, and it appears to be a huge legal minefield. Canons 59-75 deal with rescripts and present a lengthy list of potential difficulties. This could take years for bishops, their canon lawyers and the Vatican to resolve.
The letter by D Spaulding above is a model of respect, circumspection, and courtesy to the bishop, and charity to all.
I don’t believe there are more than 5 bishops in the US who would take it in good faith and believe a word of it. (Most would dismiss it out of hand, and a goodly share would put Mr. S. on a “watch” list for being a problem.)
I don’t believe there are 2 bishops in the US who would answer it honestly and duly as it deserves. Nor a single one who act on it in the suggested pathway.
In this age, with the cardinals of the world willing to elect a Francis, and with the kinds of bishops he has been appointing, it is no longer possible to believe that the bishops don’t know what’s going on, or understand what they are doing and its natural consequences. After 60 years of it, they almost certainly do know what’s going on, and understand what they are doing. They are wrecking the old church to make a new one more to their liking. They prefer to get rid of the kindly, good Catholics who like the TLM, and they are quite satisfied with the prospect of “pushing them out of the Church”. There might still be a bunch of milquetoast bishops who refuse to admit to themselves that this is the agenda, but deep down they must be at least partly aware of the reality. But more and more of the bishops are outspokenly, brazenly saying what their real agenda is. Others aren’t saying it but are on board.
When the decent archbishop of LA is loudly passed over (again) for a red hat in favor of his suffragan bishop of San Diego, a church-wrecker extraordinaire, you can be sure also that the Vatican, too, is explicitly on board with the wreckovators and not with even thesympathizers of orthodoxy . Letters to “alert” the bishops of all this are probably not going to have much effect. Sadly.
