Battlestar Galactica prequel… prequels… news

It seems that the Battlestar Galactica prequel series Caprica was axed yesterday.

This follows a week after the announcement that SyFy would produce a movie length pilot set during the first Cylon war.

It will be called, apparently, Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome.  An odd title.

Surely it will have some action in it!

A nice play on “blood and iron”, in all likelihood.

  2. Gregory DiPippo says:

“Surely it will have some action in it!” That would be nice…for a change.

  3. Desertfalcon says:

Isn’t Battlestar G., inspired by Mormon theology? My understanding is that the writers are Mormons who took some LDS theological themes and applied it to a science fiction genre. I watched the original TV program as a kid every week and loved it.

  4. Penta says:

Desertfalcon: The original BSG, maybe. The modern version? Nope.

  5. Jacob says:

I could never get into Caprica, so I’m not that disappointed.

If BSG: Blood and Chrome is more like the mini-series and the re-imagined series’ first season and less like the later seasons, I will be interested in watching it.

Father, don’t forget, there is a totally separate project, a feature-length film that will purportedly reboot the entire story, that is allegedly being helmed by Bryan Singer out there in some state of pre-production too.

  6. Supertradmum says:

Do you all really like this stuff? Ah, I am just an old Trekkie.

  7. cblanch says:

I’m with Desertfalcon…a fan of the original, not so much of the new. I am however, a HUGE Stargate SG-1 fan!!!

  8. Mickey says:

Been trying to like “Caprica.” The first season was promising, but the new episodes are…well…aimless and not a little polemically anti-Christian. It would’ve been a good parable about living in “Eden” before the Fall if they’d have stuck to the story about Man creating his own destruction through the sin of pride. Sadly, it’s turned into a second-rate sci-fi soap opera.

  9. EoinOBolguidhir says:

Except for the use of the word “Frac,” I love this show! Am I the only one? Maybe it helps that I had never watched the new BSG. It’s conceptually interesting, beautifully designed, and well acted. I hope they approach next prequel with some reference to it.

  10. Eoin: I very much enjoyed BSG. And if there is any truth to the Mormon thing, I say “So what?” This is science fiction after all.

  11. Mickey: I too had a hard time warming up to Caprica. I found myself not being overly concerned to record it. There were rather shallow attempts at social engineering in the show. After the last episode I saw, I wasn’t upset that it was canceled. Too bad, but not really too bad.

  12. I got the show in iTunes. Let’s just say I wish I could get my money back. Loved BSG, Caprica is sucking. So I’m not sad over this. I do hope they can do the First Cylon War thing though, I think that would be more interesting.

  13. Tantum Ergo says:

Maybe they can get this one right. The last Star Trek was the Novus Ordo of the series.

  14. Elizabeth D says:

I was also going to say, I heard Battlestar Galactica was (in its original concept) based on Mormonism.

I am going to preface this by saying I am not against fiction, I used to be very into Star Trek and Star Wars fandom and others, and I think sci-fi shows and films are a part of culture and not necessarily all bad. I have felt led to let go of all that. I came across a superb letter of St Jerome recently in whic he recounts an experience of Christ in which his love of Cicero and attachment to his collection of books of pagan writing was at issue, Christ says to him “You are no Christian, but a Ciceronian!” And Jerome vows on the spot never to open another book of pagan literature. Now, Cicero and the like had an obvious value in Jerome’s literary, cultural and intellectual formation, and he apparently didn’t cease quoting Pagan authors in his writing (from his prodigious memory). But, it seems he experienced a need and call to decisively, exclusively choose the Word, and for him this meant choosing Christian literature exclusively.

  15. Ernesto Gonzalez says:

I’m sorry, but I will have to disagree with Tantum Ergo. The latest Star Trek (: The Star Trek?) movie was the Reform of the Reform.

Caprica looked great, but that was about all.

  16. Peggy R says:

Eyes glazing over. Huz watched this kind of stuff. Star Wars was the only sci-fi stuff I could ever get into…

  17. Bender says:

Yes, Caprica could have been good, but like BSG before it, it descended too much into boring time-stopping soap opera and not enough SCIENCE FICTION. Too much Graystone angst and not enough Zoe, too much Eric Stolz and not enough Alessandra Torresani.

Now, if only they would cancel that even more tedious SG Universe.

Well, at least now Syfy has more time for those great wrestling shows and those awesome ghost hunting shows! Now that’s some good must-see TV. After all, who needs SCIENCE FICTION on a channel that was founded on the sci-fi genre??

  18. Bender says:

I agree that Stargate SG-1 is good though. Action, adventure, and light-hearted humor managing to combine well with a various faith-based and mythological themes.

Still, the best of the sci-fi shows thus far was Deep Space Nine. Ben Sisko was able to out-Kirk even Capt. Kirk.

  19. moon1234 says:

Nonesense. TNG was the best. Many young Sci-Fi boys grew up with Captain Picard or William Riker as their role models. Sisko was a pale comparison to Picard.

Everyone has their own likes. I was really hoping Caprica would have explored the whole concept of the unstable Cyclon more. Fill in how all of this happened a little better. How the cylons left Caprica. How the ware started, etc. It could have been so much better.

SGU is an epic failure. I stopped watching it as soon as the token homosexual figures were added. Just could NOT watch it any more. SG1 and SGA did not have this crap. Just good SciFi. I guess they just don’t make good SciFi any more.

  20. mvhcpa says:

    Three words: Kirk. Spock. McCoy.

    TOS rules.

    Michael Val
(who never could get past TNG’s constant bashing of the 20th century!)

  21. swamp_rabbit says:

I’m 30, so I cut my teeth on TNG, but to be honest, looking back, DS9 seems way better written. There are some amazing episodes of TNG, but as a whole I feel DS9 had such great vision and character development… My kids love Voyager, though. ANd I love watching the remastered original series…

I’m looking forward to more Galactica. The re imagined series had some great stuff.
