ALERT! DISCLAIMER! ALERT!

I note with concern on the site of the Wall Street Journal that the European Court of Justice, in one of 11 decisions released on Thursday, ruled that France needs to do more to protect Cricetae cricetae, the Great Alsatian Hamster, which is endangered.

It’s not my fault!

Before anyone complains, “Basil” the hamster on the right sidebar is not Cricetae cricetae.

Ehem…. as if I know.

He might be.

It is still not my fault.

Good thing the little rodent is not a human in the womb.

Wish that they would get all riled up over un-born human beings!

  3. Maltese says:

    ROTFLMAO!!

My poor wife was approached by a cop–donut falling out of his mouth–who screamed at her because the windows weren’t down enough for our dog, and that she could be charged with a crime! This was in February!

I love dogs, and have coddled the one’s I’ve had, but give me a frigging break!

Let’s have it a Felony to have a dog in the back of a truck, or in a car unbuckled!

From what I understand about Darwin’s THEORY of Evolution, “extinction” is an integral part of the process. Yet some folks work very hard to subvert the THEORY.

  5. Legisperitus says:

The Great Alsatian Hamster? Isn’t he a myth, like the Great Khan?

  6. benedetta says:

Legisperitus, Sort of like the Great American Jackalope.

  7. Random Friar says:

I just looked it up on Wiki. Apparently they’re quite numerous in Belgium. Go figure. [Fewer recipes?]

Of course, who can forget the incident of the Hyperintelligent Fire-Breathing Phase Doppelganger Giant Space Hamster. In their own defense, the scientists responsible did say “We don’t know why everyone is so mad. Genetic engineering is not an exact science. Anyway, we’d just like to get our funding back so we can pay bail and go home.” (This is a literary reference, for those who might be questioning my sanity).

Are you sure that pic isn’t of a filigree Siberian hamster?

  11. Jack Hughes says:

    Dear Father

Don’t worry even if Basil is a member of Cricetae cricetae; by keeping him in his cage, running around for our amusment you are performing a valuable public service by keeping him alive………………… and if he isn’t a member of Cricetae cricetae he is still one amusing hamster rat.

    Andy Lucy,

    You beat me to it!

  14. Banjo pickin girl says:

I thought Basil looked kind of upset lately.

  15. Ike from Sweden says:

@ray from mm: Yeah, that is a little strange. On a semi-related note: In natural science, ” THEORY” means “more or less proven correct”. A theory that has not yet been proven is called a “hypothesis”.

  16. Banjo pickin girl says:

Animals can be locally endangered. Just because there is a large population of them in one place does not make them not able to be endangered elsewhere, for example if their habitat there is disappearing. There are places in South America where the black caiman is endangered because the people are eating too many of them.

Ike: “theory” means, “a rule which fits the facts as currently known.” A hypothesis may or may not be a theory that is not yet proven, it may not involve the complexity of a theory.

  17. Oleksander says:

to those making the abortion references, the European Court of Justice dose not rule on abortion etc because it’s job is to rule on application of EU treaties, and there’s plenty of legal work on European wildlife to be ruled on

the European Court of Human Rights which is under the Council of Europe (not to be confused with the European Union) has concerned itself with abortion in the past has has been more prolife than sadly the US Supreme Court ever has

  18. Random Friar says:

@Banjoo pickin girl: Oh yes, I recognize that. It’s just that the relative proximity of Belgium and France that seems curious to me. As Fr. Z said, perhaps it’s the recipe. The French putting the “rat” back into ratatouille?

  19. Rich says:

Too late. I already have a bonfire going in backyard. Over it are two spits: skewered on one spit is a line of several tofurkies, on the other, a line of Great Alsatian Hamsters.

  20. torch621 says:

I would think dismantling the ginormous welfare state they have in Europe would be a bigger priority… apparently not.

  21. benedetta says:

Rich, tofurkies! Is there a turducken version? For special occasions.

  22. woodardj says:

You put Basil in the ratatouille?
