NEW MUSIC DISC from St Paul’s Boys Choir in Harvard Square

I have posted in the past about wonderful music CDs by the St. Paul’s Boys Choir in Harvard Square.  If you don’t have their Christmas disc, you are in for a treat.  The choir has a new recording!

Here is a tiny sample, little clips, so you can have an idea.

It is available for PRE-ORDER now and it will be released on 8 September (Nativity of Mary).

The choir was founded by, Theodore Marier, an old friend of my pastor, who was a legendary defender of Church music.  It is directed now John Robinson, from the UK, a fine director who really understands boys choirs.

What’s on the disc?  Quite a variety.

2. Virga Jesse floruit By: Anton Bruckner
3. Stabat mater dolorosa By: Giovanni Battista Pergolesi
4. Bist du bei mir By: Johann Sebastian Bach

My home parish when I was a child.

Bist du bie mir is an interesting piece, in with all the liturgical music. It was sung at an Anglican wedding I attended in Ontario. Is it considered sacred music?

Glad they’re continuing strong, especially with the news that American Boychoir School is closing.

    Post Catholic:
My copy of Bist du bei mir, Copyright, 1943 by G. Schirmer, Inc., has two English versions by Margaret Bristol: “Thou art my joy (secular) and “Draw near to me (sacred) in addition to the German.

Very nice work! Congratulations to the boys and their director!
They have developed a much freer sound and better singing technique than on their last CD and they are beaming of happiness and musical joy, it’s so lovely to listen to ! This one I’m going to buy :-)!

Dear PostCatholic and Irene, Bist du bei mir is not originally sacred music. It’s not even written by JS Bach! It’s from Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel’s opera Diomedes. JS Bach put it in the Notenbüchlein für Anna Magdalena Bach, his second wife and so it was ascribed to JS B.

The manuscript is now back in Germany after having been stolen by the Russians during WWII and brought to Kiev, quite a story!
