Father and I just crossed the Delaware at Willmington. We will visit the Basilica and then go to the Mount.

“This blog is like a fusion of the Baroque ‘salon’ with its well-tuned harpsichord around which polite society gathered for entertainment and edification and, on the other hand, a Wild West “saloon” with its out-of-tune piano and swinging doors, where everyone has a gun and something to say. Nevertheless, we try to point our discussions back to what it is to be Catholic in this increasingly difficult age, to love God, and how to get to heaven.” – Fr. Z

- The most evident mark of God’s anger and the most terrible castigation He can inflict upon the world are manifested when He permits His people to fall into the hands of clerics who are priests more in name than in deed, priests who practice the cruelty of ravening wolves rather than the charity and affection of devoted shepherds.

Get ready…
Don’t rely on popes, bishops and priests.
“He [Satan] will set up a counter-Church which will be the ape of the Church because, he the devil, is the ape of God. It will have all the notes and characteristics of the Church, but in reverse and emptied of its divine content. It will be a mystical body of the anti-Christ that will in all externals resemble the mystical body of Christ. In desperate need for God, whom he nevertheless refuses to adore, modern man in his loneliness and frustration will hunger more and more for membership in a community that will give him enlargement of purpose, but at the cost of losing himself in some vague collectivity.”
“Who is going to save our Church? Not our bishops, not our priests and religious. It is up to you, the people. You have the minds, the eyes, and the ears to save the Church. Your mission is to see that your priests act like priests, your bishops act like bishops.”- Fulton Sheen

As for Latin…
"But if, in any layman who is indeed imbued with literature, ignorance of the Latin language, which we can truly call the 'catholic' language, indicates a certain sluggishness in his love toward the Church, how much more fitting it is that each and every cleric should be adequately practiced and skilled in that language!" - Pius XI
"Let us realize that this remark of Cicero (Brutus 37, 140) can be in a certain way referred to [young lay people]: 'It is not so much a matter of distinction to know Latin as it is disgraceful not to know it.'" - St. John Paul II

Let us pray…
Grant unto thy Church, we beseech Thee, O merciful God, that She, being gathered together by the Holy Ghost, may be in no wise troubled by attack from her foes. O God, who by sin art offended and by penance pacified, mercifully regard the prayers of Thy people making supplication unto Thee, and turn away the scourges of Thine anger which we deserve for our sins. Almighty and Everlasting God, in whose Hand are the power and the government of every realm: look down upon and help the Christian people that the heathen nations who trust in the fierceness of their own might may be crushed by the power of thine Arm. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. R. Amen.

I regret not going to the basilica when I was in Baltimore
I did make it to the mount though, you can check out my post here if you like:
http://www.lostlambs.net/2008/02/my-visit-to-mount-st-marys-seminary/
Father Z, the old basilica in Baltimore is really a beautifully restored Church. If my memory serves me correctly, the TLM is celebrated there, weekly.
All the best, Tom
You may have noticed a very large statue of the Blessed Mother just over the bridge on the right as you
entered Delaware. This 33 foot high statue was recently dedicated at Holy Spirit Parish and would be well
worth a quick visit on your return trip.
The traditional Latin Mass is said not at the basilica in Baltimore, but very close, at the absolutely breathtaking (interior) Saint Alphonsus church.
Delaware? Just in time for Sen. Biden’s latest essay on intellectual honesty and command of Catholic teaching and history!

Father,
I’m glad you are coming to Baltimore! I echo the comment above about visiting both the Basilica and Saint Alphonsus. They are close and both are gorgeous in their own ways.
You mentioned seminarians recently. I think you’ll be really impressed by those at the Mount. It is a gorgeous campus and the men are as solid as you’ll find.
Pax et bonum!
D.v.
It’s too bad a blognic wasn’t possible this time in the DC/Baltimore area, you have alot of fans here! Do take a peek at St. Alphonsus if you can, the interior is truly breathtaking.
Fr., if you’re in D.C. on Wednesday at lunch, come to the national basically to the Lourdes Chapel where the 12:10 traditional Mass has now resumed with Fr. Fritz.
ever been to the Basilica in DC? I haven’t been to the Baltimore one (although I am sure it is wonderful). If you get a chance, go to the (warning: long title coming) Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception here in DC ASAP!
Happy that you are coming to Baltimore, the Premier See. Note that when in the Basilica of the Assumption, which was recently restored and is beautiful, you’ll see the actual place where Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli prayed when he came on his visit to the U.S. before he became Pope Pius XII. St. Alphonsus is in the same area and is really worth seeing with so many lovely statues. The TLM is said there every Sunday at 11:30 a.m. and is the only Church in the Archdiocese which has that distinction.
In Baltimore, do visit the estate house of Charles Carroll, Jr., son of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, the Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence. It is on the Homewood Campus of my alma mater, the Johns Hopkins Unversity up on Charles Street. Beautiful home, carefully restored.
fortradition, thanks for confirming my statement about the TLM being offered at the Basilica. I was beginning to think I was getting senile! Tom
Welcome to the Diocese of Wilmington, Delaware Fr. Z — Fr. Michael Darcy, Associate Pastor, St. Ann’s Bethany Beach, Delaware
There seems to be confusion on basilicas and traditional Latin Masses: the basilica shrine in D.C. has Low Mass Wednesdays at 12:10 p.m. in the Lourdes chapel; the basilica in Baltimore does not have the traditional Latin Mass. It is said Sundays at 11:30 at nearby Saint Alphonsus church.
