Thanks are due.

First, thank you all you supported the "Pound Fr. Finigan" campaign.  You were very good to him.  I was a little jealous by the time it was over, but it was a good and cheerful jealousy!  Some of your largess spilled over onto me as well and I thank those of you who have helped through the donation button on the left sidebar and on some entries.  You are kind and it has been helpful.  The birds are very grateful.  The little beggars are eating their way through my wallet these days, twice as much, it seems, as during the deep winter.

I received a book from Fr. Kenneth Novak of Angelus Press called Love in the Ruins, which obviously echoes the famous novel of Walker Percy.  This book, however, is a series of reflections of traditionalist Catholics on what a traditional expression of Catholicism, especially the older form of Mass, means to them.  When I have time I will look at this more closely.

People have sent things from my amazon wish list.  Some practical, some to lift the spirits, some to edify.  How much I appreciate your good will.

I also received from CJ a DVD about Chinese Opera, movie called Forever Enthralled (Mei Lanfang).  This is directed by Chen Kaige, who also did the famous Farewell My Concubine (Ba wang bie ji).  I sensed some thematic tendrils between the two films, symbols such as the candied crab apples and odd sounds, denoting memory.  However, the subtitles (which I still need) were hysterically useless, worse than useless.  Imagine putting Chinese through babblefish, so that even the people’s names are literally translated, turns of phrase a slavishly rendered so that they make no sense in the receiving language.  Bp. Trautman would have been appalled.  Imagine simply having pinyin inserted here and there into the subtitles, or sometimes just a number or other symbol.  It was a wild, frustrating ride.  The film is beautiful, however, as you can expect from Chen Kaige.  There were quite a few scenes of the opera, both traditional and avante guarde.  It was interesting.  I will have to wait until my Chinese is better to get the full gist of it.

GS send John Henry Newman: A Biography (Oxford Lives) by a friend of mine Fr. Ian Ker.  I have looked forward to getting this.   I am grateful.

I hope I haven’t forgotten anyone.

I want to thank one more time the person who sent the find USB microphone which made the sound quality of the last PODCAzT so much better.  Also, I am deeply grateful for the noiseless mic boom, which is a joy. Having the right tools makes such a difference.  I can use the little mic stand for the mic for the live stream now.  Very content.  Furthermore, I used the little Sony digital mp3 recorder I received some time ago to record last Sunday’s sermon and, later in the day, the proceedings of a literary group I belong to reading T.S. Eliot.  It is splendid.  It will be very useful.

I must eventually get to some books sent by Baronius Press.  Perhaps tomorrow, when I get my article done for the paper.  Of note is a biligual edition of the Bible, with the old Vulgate and the Douay-Reims translation in columns.
