Perhaps a miracle for Venerable Pope Pius XII?

This is really going to get the roller-coaster running.

From CNA:

Vatican investigating miracle attributed to Pius XII

Vatican City, Jan 18, 2010 / 02:40 pm (CNA).- The Prefect Emeritus of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, Cardinal Jose Saraiva Martins, confirmed over the telephone to CNA today that a "presumed miracle" attributed to Pope Pius XII is under investigation.  The case involves a patient cured of cancer in southern Italy.  [And the Holy Father’s visit to the Roman Synagogue was… yesterday.]

Cardinal Saraiva was quick to caution, however, that there is a big difference between a "presumed" miracle and a "confirmed" miracle.

The case comes to the Congregation for Saints’ Causes from the town of Castellammare di Stabia near Naples, Italy.  "Some months ago," the local Sorrento & Dintorni online publication reported on Sunday, a person was discovered to be cured of a form of cancer previously declared incurable after praying for the intercession of Pope Pius XII.

The doctors of the person, of whom no details are public, were unable to give a scientific explanation for the occurrence, according to the article.

According to the same news source, the story was confirmed by Fr. Carmine Giudici, Vicar General of the Diocese of Sorrento, who said, "It’s all true."  Fr. Carmine said that the Holy See was in contact with the diocese after having been contacted by a local church-goer who says that he or she received a miracle "by the intercession of Pius XII."

"The archbishop then decided to institute within days the appropriate diocesan tribunal."

The existence of the possible miracle was confirmed to CNA by Cardinal Saraiva Martins on Monday afternoon.

The prefect emeritus also said that it is impossible to estimate the amount of time it might take for the process of confirmation to be carried out.

  1. Will the anti-Catholic press, like The Pill aka The Tablet, and NYT, and the anti-Pius XII Jews have any role in determining if it is indeed a miracle?

The seat of the devil’s advocate is empty.

Wow. That’s terrific news. Hope it is confirmed.

All usual, B16 will do the right thing, let the chip fall where they may. I wish Catholics who didn’t like his visit to the Synagogue yesterday will see that he does what he deeply believes is right. Being a man of charity, he is naturally pained when others see his actions through a distorting lens.

Radio talk show host Michael Savage is vigorously defending Pope Pius XII on his show. He says that he’s only interested in the truth and those who knew Pius personally, as well as those who examined his record while he was still alive, were unanimous in their praise. He mentioned Albert Einstein, Rabbi Zolli of Rome, and Golda Meir as admirers of the Holy Father. If only more of the press would follow his example.

  4. pilgrimom: Michael Savage? I shall have to tune in!

  5. Fabrizio says:

    Father,

if confirmed, the story is even better than it looks. According to a report by A. Tornielli, the man who claims to have prayed for the healing of his severely ill wife claims that he had actually prayed for the intercession of John Paul II, but John Paul II appeared to him during a dream and told him to ask Pius XII!!

I love it. If true it’d be just perfect.

    Fabrizio-what you said!

And I’d thumb my nose at the Bitter Pill, the New York Slimes, and all the other anti-Catholic screeds out there!

Fr.Z: Let me add one caveat. Dr. Savage apparently has a very bad impression of the medieval Church. It’s an incorrect impression, which being a medievalist, I’d love to set right, but I’ll take what I can get on Pius XII. In the media today, he’s a rare bird. Also, he mentioned that he has more pro-Pius information on his website.
